Interesting that Adelson and Murdoch media are going after Trump for his negative effect on tourism.
Lots of posts on Twitter and Tik-Tok about what a ghost town Las Vegas has become. They show pictures of empty streets and restaurants.
All those Vegas workers who voted for Trump, because of his no-tax on tips policy, are now learning that it doesn't mean much if they are no tips to tax.

It seems so obvious to repeat but I will. The U.S. is not a self-contained economy. We depend on the good will and relationships with other countries, especially those with money, to sustain us—to buy our products and visit our tourist destinations. Dump has burned it all to the ground.
It’s not just tariffs, although today’s jobs report tells us they are killing us. It’s so, so much more.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 1, 2025 2:53 PM |

My advice, if the economy tanks and there is a shitty Christmas, the week after Christmas and New Year's is the best time to see what bargains are to be had. Vegas cannot be seen to be a ghost town on NYE.

There are casinos EVERYWHERE now, Las Vegas has also outpriced itself. You could take a trip to Monaco or Nice France for the same price now and the men are hotter.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 2, 2025 8:07 AM |
I used to love Las Vegas and have been many times. The last trip was so disappointing. While you certainly don't go there to save money, I was shocked at how quickly my budgeted daily amounts disappeared. And not just on gambling; everything was stratospherically expensive and the value became a point of diminishing returns. It just wasn't a fun way to spend money. I never understood how everyone was so drunk when it takes forever to get a drink and even then they're junk. It might be the whole industry -- I went to Encore in Boston once and a Tito's rocks was $19.00.
That said, I'm glad that that dreadful woman is not happy.

Vegas began pivoting toward foreign tourists back in the 90s.
The Florida theme parks have gotten dependent on them, as well, and rising ticket prices make it difficult for domestic tourists to replace them.

R29, I’m far from Gen Z but that’s a load of shit. They definitely aren’t interested in Vegas so much. In fact, they’re not interested in many Boomer/Gen X things. From what I can see from my nephews, they value travel quite a bit, they’re away almost every weekend, going to varied locations that frankly never even occurred to me. They also go abroad frequently—I went abroad exactly twice in my first 30 years of life. Of course, they love video games and social media as well (but then again, so do I).

I’ve been to Las Vegas three times, from the UK. The first 2 times I went, it seemed pretty affordable. The hotel prices were fine, and since I am not much of a gambler. I visited with a few friends who were gamblers, so I’d splurge some cash on the roulette machines, but apart from that I treated it as a beachless beach holiday, spending some time lying at the pool, doing some shopping and taking some trips out to the desert. I really enjoyed it.
However, on my last trip, post-Covid, the prices were really out of control. My hotel slapped a huge resort(?) fee onto my bill at checkout, which was a really unpleasant surprise and even restaurants and bars were really expensive.
And I have to say, American politics recently has made me see the country differently. Why would I visit somewhere which might decide to deny me entry because I hate Trump?
by Anonymous | reply 39 | August 2, 2025 2:03 PM |
The Gen Z that does gamble does it online, no need for them to go to Vegas.
Anyway, Vegas is like most cruises - trashy, lowbrow, and filled with MAGA. And now that it's so expensive, you can't even claim go for a cheap weekend, so instead of going to see fake European monuments, just go see the real thing. That way, you don't have to cross the border and worry about your phone being searched by some MAGA crazy customs agent and there's less chance of being surrounded by fat, gun-toting rednecks.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | August 2, 2025 2:57 PM |
Gen Z does everything online. Date, work, have sex. They're homebound antisocial weirdos. We're fucked when they turn 50.
But what will be worse will be Gen Alpha. They'll grow up as AI natives and will think it's stupid to come up with your own thoughts and ideas when the computer can do it for you.

Vegas will start loosening up again on cheaper rooms, etc. once the Trump Depression fully kicks in. But long term damage may have been done. Why go there and get gouged when you have casino resorts in your home state?

[quote]everything was stratospherically expensive
Did you stay at the Stratosphere?
by Anonymous | reply 43 | August 2, 2025 6:36 PM |
It's a mixed bag. Convention attendance and hotel occupancy is down but gambling revenue is up. Also, local casino Red Rock just did its best quarter in its history.
Los Angeles will soon get another choice when Hard Rock opens in Tejon, south of Bakersfield. The local casinos like Yaamava and Morongo are still packed and since California are by far Vegas' #1 clients, charging for parking is just another shot to the joints for Vegas.
However, they will not lower prices. That's a given. You will get bargains, maybe comps will loosen up for gamblers. However, right after the pandemic, Vegas offered bargain rates to all properties. You guessed it. "Undesirables" flooded the hotels and convinced regulars that Vegas was even more unsafe.

I had to go to LV for a business conference. Had to. 1st day I drove out to Red Rock Canyon to hike a bit. Beautiful.
Later I tried to find a cowboy poetry reading that was going on downtown, but I got lost.
Another day I drove to Hoover Dam, where some rando approached me and said he'd rented a car like mine but they didn't give him a turbo and how did I get a turbo, apparently he was in line behind me at the rental place.
I did enjoy being able to smoke cigarettes inside everywhere, before I quit. That town gives me the creeps, like Desert Hot Springs.

[quote]...right after the pandemic, Vegas offered bargain rates to all properties. You guessed it. "Undesirables" flooded the hotels and convinced regulars that Vegas was even more unsafe.
But haven't the "desirables" become undesirable themselves? Not to the perspective of a casino manager, but societally? Who looks to Las Vegas as a desirable destination, or to the people who go there as enviable high-living lucky bastards? Las Vegas I was of the 1950s-1960s, mega resort Las Vegas II began in the 1980s, but in the past 35 or so years it's become what? It doesn't seem to have taken on a new identity, rather it's a thousand mediocre things to a thousand mediocre people.
I was there just once, in the 1990s,so what do I know. But you can see the fortunes of the place reflected in its depiction in entertainment. It's cheesy now, cheesier than ever, and a bit sadder than ever.

Customer service in Vegas ain't what it used to be. I was there recently and I'd go to the bar (on a non-busy week night) and the bartenders or on their phone or talking to each other, ignoring customers. That never was the case 15-20 years ago. Maybe they should let the mob back in to run the casinos again. Customer service was king back then.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | August 3, 2025 3:19 PM |
I was watching a couple videos on this. Two hotels have shut down on the strip, Mirage and some other one, so there are fewer hotel rooms than pre-pandemic and yet occupancy rate is lower than in 2019.
The 10% in visitor drop doesn't sound much - but it depends on who it is. International travelers stay longer and spend more.
Besides the resort fees, almost all hotels are charging $40-$50 night parking - but also there are other fees like $60 for early check-in, $25 for non-plastic cutlery and plates for delivery, then there are still COVID charges and CST charges added to almost all restaurant bills.
Lastly, they've added a lot more automated games (roulette) so no dealer needed, they've changed the payouts on slots to 89% instead of 94-95%. They've added a lot higher minimums at betting tables.
THEN - they've changed some of the betting tables payout policies or rules and for most uninitiated, they don't understand it. Blackjack used to pay out $150 on $100 hand. Now it's $120 to $100 for certain tables - but lower minimums, so more people go to those tables not knowing that the odds are worse for them and so are the payouts.
They've treated everyone like consumers are complete idiots - and it makes people angry. Once they are angry, they won't return.
I have to wonder - what were the profits for these companies the last 2-3 years? They probably will just do creative accounting to show it's not as profitable as it looks.
Add in layoffs, so customer service is worse. Las Vegas is a stupid place to vacation now. Oh - and entertainment prices. Pre-pandemic you could see Cirque shows for $40-$50 - now it's $150-$300.
What I hate is that these execs will go on shareholder calls and crow about how well they're doing - but it's not good management, they're just sneaking in fees everywhere for short-term gain that is destroying their business long-term.
Meanwhile execs make crazy bonuses and slap themselves on the back as being so smart - and when questioned, just say - EVERYONE is doing it - it's the market!
by Anonymous | reply 55 | August 3, 2025 5:02 PM |
Vegas had to adapt when other states began to have gambling. They built a big convention center and re-oriented toward foreign visitors (the fake Paris and NYC were for Asian visitors). It worked for a couple decades and it meant they could rely less on low cost junkets from LA. Still, all this couldn't last forever and only so many hotels could really sustain going high end, esp. with the economies of scale necessary to keep them going.
I've only been there once, which was enough. The kitsch was fun for a single visit. For a non-gambler, the casinos were depressing. The climate was obviously unlivable even in the late fall. The hotels were so huge that everything seemed institutional. The rooms were full of glitzy faux luxury that doesn't last. I can't imagine ever going back.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | August 3, 2025 5:42 PM |
R56 - Agreed with every sentence - including the institutional style hotel rooms, faux luxury, etc.
But most importantly, this: only so many hotels could really sustain going high end, esp. with the economies of scale necessary to keep them going.
It feels like everything the past 10-20 years has shifted to high-income - particularly housing. How many houses do people need?
And nickle and dining may work at expensive places with wealthy clients, but not for your average customer.
What this represents is an even further out-of-touch stance among executives with average working people and middle, even upper middle class. These execs are getting paid so much they've lost their sense of reality.

I recall they went through a phase in the late 90s early aughts attempting to make it more family friendly. Even more recently, per the article. I went my first and only time in November 2022. I did see a number groups that included children and teens. A quinceañera at the Venetian, some kind of baseball tournament (I couldn't figure out why in November) with lots of high school age kids in uniforms with their families, generally a lot more families than I anticipated up and down the strip. But it was immediately post-pandemic, the week before Thanksgiving. Maybe people were just dying to get out.

It's not just Trump when it comes to Vegas. Vegas got cocktail and thought it was some elite vacation destination when really most Americans went there cause everything besides the gambling itself was a cheap, good time.
But the loss of international crowds is certainly Trump's fault. Pretty obvious that when you threaten some countries, attack all the countries in the world with random tariffs, and mistakenly give some tourists a hard time cause your immigration people are clueless buffoons that attack first and ask questions later, , people aren't going to be rushing to visit your country.

r65, in 1966 we drove to California from Chicago and took a side trip to Viva Las Vegas for a weekend.
We ate great food for pennies.
My parents booked a dinner show at the Desert Inn with Joan Rivers. It seems that families from LA brought their kids with them to Vegas for a day or two, and Joan had enough material to do a Family Show. She was hilarious, I had stuffed pheasant with wild rice.
I was asked by Stardust security to stop gambling at the nickel slots in a secluded bank where I thought there were no cameras. I won $28 and asked my mom to cash me out.
It was a different world.

So this local news station in Las Vegas did a story called, "Is Las Vegas dying?"
In it, the reporter goes through the usual stats, and the familiar reasons for the slump, such as Trump immigration policies, tariffs, as well as less money to spend by Americans.
The one thing the reporter DOES NOT touch on, is the price gouging by Las Vegas hotels: pay for parking, exhorbitant food and beverage costs, exhorbitant fees, high room prices, and tons of frivolous charges.
It's like nobody wants to talk to the Casinos about the elephant in the room: PRICE GOUGING.
Unless Las Vegas gets honest with itself, tourist numbers will continue to decline.
Prices in Vegas need to come down, or it will die.

Vegas runs on old people. Old people throwing away their Social Security checks on gambling, because it's almost free money to them.
Well, those old people now have to spend that Social Security money on groceries, medicine, gas. Their children need help, too. So that free money floating around can't be wasted on quarter slots.
And it'll get worse. The recent bill passed by the Republicans and signed by Trump contains massive cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, meaning old people will have to pay even more for the medicine and medical care they're already stretching to pay for.
Trump is running around saying how great everything is, how prices are going down and things have never been cheaper. The Rs know that this is a lie and that's why they're trying to gerrymander their House majority - to inoculate themselves against an electoral whupping they know is coming.

Another problem that Vegas won't address, is that casinos are now mainly owned by mega-corporations.
MGM owns over 10 casinos on the strip. MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur, New York New York, Bellagio, Ara, and on and on.
As such, there's really no competition, and no incentive to bring prices down. MGM has no competition, and so they can charge any price they want, and no one will undercut them.
That's good for MGM, and bad for customers.
It's also good for MGM shareholders, who keep demanding higher and higher profits. So MGM has to continue to charge higher and higher prices.
I hope I'm using the term correctly, but it's a zero-sum game.
Customers don't have endless deep pockets. And shareholders cannot be making endless profits. That is simply, unsustainable.
At some point, the economics of that situation will collapse, and I think that's where we are right now.
But it seems to me like the mega-corporation casinos don't really care. They're going to play this game all the way until the bitter end.
Until they extract every last penny from the customer.

R81, the bill does not cut Medicare—from Google: “The "One Big Beautiful Bill" does not cut Medicare benefits. It does, however, restrict Medicare eligibility for certain immigrants. Specifically, it eliminates Medicare eligibility for refugees, asylum seekers, and individuals with Temporary Protected Status, among others, after 18 months following the bill's enactment. The bill also impacts Medicare indirectly by delaying the implementation of rules that aimed to streamline enrollment for low-income beneficiaries in Medicare Savings Programs.”
Plus I have to disagree with your assessment that old people who gamble do so because Social Security is like free money to them. Most people gamble a bit for fun but know their limits. Gamblers with a problem will gamble whatever money they have, SS or not.
But you are exactly right that rising costs in other areas are really going to have an impact on Vegas (already has, as we see). It’s beyond ridiculous and cruel that Dump continues to gaslight people into thinking prices have gone down. The only thing that’s happened is prices are rising more slowly than in the past. But they’re still rising.

[quote] The one thing the reporter DOES NOT touch on, is the price gouging by Las Vegas hotels: pay for parking, exhorbitant food and beverage costs, exhorbitant fees, high room prices, and tons of frivolous charges.
I stand corrected.
At the very end of the video, the reporter said that he interviewed people who said that they are being "nickel and dimed" by casinos, and this is a multi-part report, so he will cover that part on Wednesday.
I can't wait to watch that.
He said that someone paid $80 for a "double" liquor drink on the Strip.
Fucking outrageous.

R82, you are so right. That’s what corporations do. They extract every dollar, until they realize there’s no more to extract. Then they shut down the business, lay off everyone, and take a nice big write-off.

Excellent point r87. While they haven’t cut benefits for those on Medicare, they def have restricted who can get it, even if those people pay into it through their jobs.

If fewer people have Medicare (or cash) to cover medical services, prices - at least initially- will go up.
Hospitals and doctors’ offices have large fixed expenses that they still have to cover (with fewer patients).

And even if the "Well actually!" people on the thread are correct (they aren't), the massive cuts to SNAP and other childhood government services means that people will be turning to Grandma for more help. Which means either kids die/go hungry or there's less money to spare for Vegas.

by Anonymous | reply 96 | August 6, 2025 11:07 PM |
Yes, the strip casinos are price gouging but consumers are staying home and not spending money. If they weren't afraid of recession or worse, they would still go to Vegas and pay the higher prices.
It IS because Trump has fucked up the economy in under 6 months. These MAGAts are using the price gouging excuse now because they will never, ever, ever admit Trump has fucked everything up.

We had a good thing, you stupid son of a bitch. We had Circus Circus. We had the Tropicana and the Excalibur. We had cheap slots, 24-hour wedding chapels, all-you-can eat buffets, shrimp cocktails on the house. You could have shut your mouth, kept the city affordable for middle-class tourists, and printed more money than you ever needed. But no, you just had to blow it up. You and your resort fees and your Michelin stars. Your Fontainebleau Hotel, Jean Georges Steakhouse, poolside cabana rentals, and Formula 1 Grand Prix. If you’d done your job, known your place, and stopped private equity from pricing out regular visitors, we all be fine right now. But you didn’t.

Some of these casinos are now too big to fail. Resorts World and Fontainebleu are ghost towns. Too huge and no customers. And when the Trump Depression fully kicks in, things will get much worse. Will Vegas get a bailout?

$40 for a burger on The Strip. Five times that if you want to sit at a table with linens and a reservation.
$55 per night in Resort Fees, which get you fuck-all in amenities.
The table games have all been nerfed, and now pay out 6:5 odds at best.
And you can't walk out on the sidewalk or gamble near the front of the casino, or else you'll get stabbed by a homeless junkie.

I'm waiting for September to see if gravity takes them lower before I decide to buy.
Hell, maybe I'll just book the flight and hotel and take the chance that they're near giving tix away on NY Eve.

The sad thing is that Nevada has kept the gaming tax so low forever that while they were sucking the cash out of the economy and giving it to Republican Capitalists, that they have also starved the government. Nevada has been turning out minimally educated graduates for decades. When the casino jobs shrink, there is nowhere for them to go.
Another reason Miriam is a fetid cunt.

Vegas is just too expensive. Hotel rates shoot up in surge pricing. Residency tickets, show tickets all are way too much. We were there for a conference and we ate at Yardbrid. They wanted 60 dollars for fried chicken with nothing else with it, and it was probably shittier than KFC. I have to go there once a year for a work conference and I hate it, but luckily it is all covered.

As a resident, if I have to meet people for a meal, I always like to go to The Brass Fork at Sunset Station.
It is reminiscent of the times in Las Vegas when the Hotel Cafés were as good as the gourmet rooms.
Inexpensive but in HENDERSON.

Vegas grew too fast. I mean way too fast. People started moving and the infrastructure can't keep up. If you're interested in moving with a family, the schools are the worst, although maybe they're ranked 2nd worst. And because of the taxes as well as the total politicization of the process, things look even worse ten years from now. Hospitals are also ridiculously bad. And there's that little water shortage thing. Knowing the neighbors in Cali who've moved to Vegas, let's just say they're not getting our best and brightest.

The Bacchanal Buffet at Caesars Palace is $88, and the buffet at the Wynn is $80 per person. So, you're looking at $160 for a couple to eat at a good buffet. Add in another $30+ for tip and it raises the price to $200.
Vegas used to have cheap buffets at the top hotels to lure in tourist to their casinos. It was all about making money in the casinos. Now, they price gouge you on everything.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | August 8, 2025 8:37 PM |

She's an entitled cunt and she doesn't care enough to hide it. She wants the West Bank annexed yesterday and that's what this is really all about.
