Why HIV rates among Russian soldiers are soaring
Russia’s armed forces have suffered a surge of HIV infections during the war in Ukraine, which has been attributed to fatalistic soldiers having unprotected sex and using drugs.
The number of HIV cases in the military has shot up since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, including a fivefold increase by autumn that year.
By the end of 2023, there were 20 times more HIV diagnoses among Russian soldiers compared with before the war.

Ukraine has also seen HIV prevention and treatment disrupted by war. The country has the highest prevalence of HIV in Europe, with 240,000 people estimated to be living with it.

This is like when soldiers shot themselves in the foot during WWI to get invalided out and return home.

Russia has always had extremely high HIV rates compared to the rest of Europe. I believe I read somewhere that the city of Kaliningrad was the HIV capital of Europe. Rampant prostitution and intravenous drug use were the main culprits. Plus, isn't a large number of their force in Ukraine prisoners who were promised amnesty in return for being cannon fodder?

I bet it is mostly the result of IV drug use and not gay sex. Russia is an extremely homophobic society and not the type of place where soldiers would casually fuck each other because they're bored or lonely.

R19, sometimes extremely homophobic societies are where covert gay sex happens most.

Interesting to learn from OP's linked article that Russia ranks in the top five countries with the highest rates of infections worldwide and that about 30,000 Russians of working age (25 - 50) die annually from HIV still now.
Because Russia is an incredibly homophobic country it is completely unsurprising to learn that they have defunded and shut down HIV prevention programs in Russia and also worked to influence surrounding countries to defund and shutdown their own HIV prevention programs.
Very sad.

[quote]Russia is not in Europe.
R16. Russia spans Eastern Europe and North Asia. It is the largest country in the world, and extends across eleven time zones, Moscow and St. Petersburg, the two most important cities in Russia, are located within the European boundaries--and at least western Russia is considered European. Moscow, the most populous metropolitan area in Europe, is the capital and largest city of Russia, while Saint Petersburg is its second-largest city and cultural centre.
By the way, Ukraine is entirely in Europe. Ukraine is the second-largest country in Europe after Russia.
