Percentage Based Tip vs. Custom Tip for grocery delivery orders.
If you choose a pre-calculated percentage based tip, the tip will be reduced commensurate with any out-of-stock items that are refunded thus lowering the grand total.
If you choose a custom tip, the tip remains the same even if items are out of stock and refunded thus lowering the grand total.
I always choose a custom tip which guarantees the shopper the tip regardless if items are out of stock. So why do the shoppers keep trying to push substitutes on me when I have clearly stated "Do Not Substitute, Refund". Why. Ugh.

Try doing your own shopping.

Because Instacart put out an update that demerits them for every refund that wasn’t specifically requested.

R3 the metric is called “unrequested refunds”, and the screen instacart shows the shopper unless you chose a backup or specifically requested a refund will say: “NAME requests a replacement” and then railroad them to a suggestion

Why are you tipping people for not doing their job properly?

R5 They are doing it properly. They’re doing exactly what they’re directed to do by the app that controls everything.

I would gladly eat the smallest tip of anything available, thank you.

^Well they are still using their car and gas to bring my groceries to my doorstep regardless if they gave me a replacement I didn't ask for, that's why I tip. Quite generously I might add.
My point was, if the shopper made the replacement so as not to reduce my generous tip, then it was unnecessary as the tip would have remained the same. I know there are tip baiters out there but I don't have a history of being one.

Of all the things I've done in my life that I regret, not one of them is overtipping a delivery person. They've got a shitty job that pays horribly. If they end up getting a tip that's over the prescribed percentage boundaries, let them have the win. You're paying to have groceries delivered, so you can afford it.
If you're having tsuris about tipping on a regular basis, think about switching to Walmart's InHome membership. For around $150 per year, you get unlimited deliveries and, since the drivers are Walmart employees, no tipping is required (actually, they're forbidden to take tips).

R8 I explained, it’s because the app tells them to and gives them demerits if they don’t. It threatens to deactivate shoppers with bad “shopping quality” ratings. That includes the unrequested refunds metric. If you want refunds, you have to select that option yourself.

When I order from my local grocery I do a flat fee tip because the store workers pick the items and instacart is just delivering.
if I order elsewhere, I do a percentage tip because some of those fuckers will claim they couldn't find 50 percent of my order items and still get tipped as if they did.
