The character of Columbo was first played by Bert Freed in a 1960 episode of The Chevy Mystery Show titled “Enough Rope”.

In 1962 “Enough Rope” was adapted as a stage play entitled “Prescription Murder” and Thomas Mitchell, better known as Gerald O’Hara played the Italian cop. Columbo was Mitchell’s last role.

It wasn’t until 1968 that “Prescription Murder”, starring Peter Falk as Columbo aired as a 2 hour made for tv movie. It was so successful that a pilot was ordered and finally aired in 1971.

More than 50 years later Falk and Columbo are so inextricably linked it’s hard to believe Falk was the third actor in the role.
