Valley Girl (1983)

She's cool. He's hot. She's from the Valley. He's not.

Nicolas Cage ("Vampire's Kiss") and Deborah Foreman ("The Destroyer") star in the totally awesome comedy "Valley Girl!" When Julie (Foreman) dumps her preppy boyfriend, the last thing she expects is to find love with the rockin' Randy (Cage). The future's open wide for Julie ... but when her disapproving friends (E.G. Daily, Heidi Holicker and Michelle Meyrink) find Randy to be grody to the max, she is caught up in a culture clash between her Valley lifestyle and her Hollywood punk.

Featuring a so-bitchin' soundtrack packed with New Wave hits, "Valley Girl" is a sweetly romantic slice of 80s nostalgia from director Martha Coolidge ("Real Genius"). Are you going to love it? We're, like, so sure!

I was 14 when this came out and loved it. As an elder gay, I now understand why the WW2 generation saw things like this and wondered what the hell had happened to civilization.

I find it funny that they didn’t even use Foreman on the poster as the character pictured had the more stereotypical Valley look that girls across the US were trying to emulate - the headband, the miniskirt. I don’t even think her character was supposed to be from The Valley.

I wonder if the movie was even titled “Valley Girl” in production or if they changed the name when the Zappa song came out. The movie was probably in the middle of filming when the song hit.

R3 actually, this movie was made to capitalize on the valley girl fad that was popularized by Frank Zappa and his daughter in their hit song, which was released a year earlier, Zappa even tried to sue.

The song was released in June 1982 and VG was filmed four months later in October.

My partner looked exactly like Nic Cage in this movie when he was in his 20s. Swoon.

Blech, Nic Cage eating a bug in Vampire’s Kiss around the same period. I didn’t forgive him until Raising Arizona.

It came out after The Official Preppy Handbook. It was right around the time cameltoe corduroys on women came to an end. It was also when Cyndi Lauper’s first album dropped.

I love Nicholas Cage but this movie was the only time I've found him sexually attractive.
