Why are people so obsessed with keeping the family name alive?
Just saw a video on youtube in which Kim Kardashian is whining about how the family surname will die if their brother Robert doesn't have a son to carry on the Kardashian name. I think this to be so stupid and vain. They all have kids, they could have given their children the Kardashian surname if they wanted to (they weren't even married to the fathers except eventually Kim and Kanye)
It's not just the Kardashians. It's non-famous people too with normal, boring names. Smith, Jones, Schull, Adams, Sullivan, Meyers........and so on. Like even if one Smith doesn't have kids, there's millions of other people in the world with the same name.
Look at Kate Moss and Elizabeth Hurley, their kids have their surnames. You don't have to name it after the father.

My family name is very rare, probably due to a misspelling when ancestors arrived back in 1820. There are descendants several generations distant who carry on but in my immediate family, it will pass out.

Would it be such a tragedy if the Kardashian name died out?

The Kardashians are the human equivalent of roaches. We’ll never be rid of them.

My family surname will be gone when my brother, sister and I die. Interestingly, so will my mother’s surname with her brother’s kids (my cousins) deaths because none of his boys had any male children. I’m fine with both the names dying.

R7 I was about to say... I have Armenian friends that are upset because there are no more sons left and the rest of that family was killed during the Armenian genocide. Honestly, hereditary family names in many cultures haven't been around that long. They weren't common for Ashkenazi Jews in Europe until the 19th century. It isn't something that would be important to me.
