Anna Wintour
Cunning. Shrewd. Cold. Bitch.
These are just a few of the names she has been called in her forty years of being in high fashion and journalism. Yet, to only classify her as a British Leona Helmsley would be misguided.
From a young age, she either worked in her father's publishing house or at magazines like Oz and Harper's Bazaar before landing the Editor-In-Chief position at Vogue.
What are DL's thoughts on Anna Wintour?

Imagine working hard in a high stress profession your entire life, trying hard not to be rude, but be direct and honest like every man that you have worked with, only for some girl to write a tell-all book about how awful of a person you are.
And that book is the ONLY thing people ever want you to talk about.

Let’s not pretend Anna Wintour is the woman who refuses to walk down stairs.

I think her mood is very dependent on who is interviewing her. For example, she does not come off as rude or difficult in this 1995 Charlie Rose interview.

And this 2002 conversation with Charlie Rose where they discuss the life of Yves Saint Laurent.
You can tell she is actually having a good time. It helps Charlie isn't interrupting.

But look at how she handles herself on David Letterman. She seems defensive and frustrated.

Get a real job.
A lifetime of power and privilege, all for what??? So she can...tell people which designers are HOT and which are NOT?
In what universe is this empty profession worth a fart in a windstorm? What value would she be to anyone in a natural disaster? How many hours would she last in a zombie apocalypse?

She is a hard worker. Loves tennis, politics, the opera, and early morning runs.

R10 If you call a fashion magazine "work."
She could've built her empire on real journalism or publishing - making or breaking world leaders and shaping generations of public opinion. Instead, she wears sunglasses indoors and holds court over which shade of blue is best for The Hamptons this year.

No formal degree - got all of her jobs and connections because of her father, then rode the feminist movement upwards of putting women in higher roles.
Her success would never happen today.
She knows she held on to that position far longer than needed or what was good for the magazine. NO ONE should be in power for 40 years unless you created and built the thing yourself.
I detest her and what she stands for. Boomer who got where she is with no credentials and thinks she's superior to everyone else.

R9, that scene in The Devil Wears Prada when Anne Hathaway snickers at the two belts they can’t choose from and then they proceed to humiliate her about how fashion informs every facet of your life and she’s just too stupid to understand always makes me laugh. Talk about preachy!
Fashion is fun. It’s not rocket science despite what people like Anna say to justify what they’ve done with their lives.

R16 - Meryl put that scene in as a lecture to the audience. It really stops and makes you think.
BUT - most of the mannerisms and things that she did were stolen from The September Issue - a documentary film about Anna a year before DWP. They put in a LOT of moments from that documentary into the film.

R17 I thought the September Issue was in 2009, Devil Wears Prada was 2006.

I never like her dresses. They are always too busy and colorful. It is just too many things going on at once. I have always felt solids were more timeless and elegant.

She is not remotely similar to Leona Helmsley. I’ve met both in my life. The words the OP used to describe her are words often associated with hyper successful women.
In person she is charming, not warm but smart, witty and tremendously bright. She is also an incredible speaker and has been a champion of progressive politics. Of course she’s tough but I admire that!.

R32 - I'm on Anna's side. There's nothing more boring than wearing black - it's over. Only on specific occasions.
I'm so tired of seeing black clothes come down a runway. I'm currently watching Making the Cut and more than one designer only works in black. Sorry - that means you have no sense of pattern or color and you make variations of the same fucking uniform each time.
Black clothes are overdone and it is for people with no style.

AWful shrieking bitch., unlike her analogue character in "The Devil Wears Prada" who is an awful soft-spoken bitch.
I will always give her credit, though, for affecting her signature haircut when she was much younger, knowing that she could replace it when she got older with the wig she wears now, which is in practically the same style but cleverly hides more of the wrinkles on her forehead and her cheeks. That took a lot of forethought.

Chanel is not as relevant now as it was back during the 50s but I guess someone needs to keep the myth alive.. The "iconic" classic flap bag isn't all that. They don't use real gold hardware anymore and that stopped quite some time ago. My eye is on Dior now since Richard Anderson is the new creative director. I quite like his Dior Bram Stoker's Dracula new book tote. Dior must have given him a better offer than Loewe had.

R20 One of the things I like about her is her dresses. I love all the color, and agree with her when asked, "What is something you'd never wear?" Answer: "Head-to-toe black."

I like her stacks of semiprecious stone necklaces in lieu of pearls, but the endless gaudy floral print dresses and perpetual white sandals just make her look like a richer version of a dowdy elderly lady. It’s not chic at all.

I read an interview with her years ago - sorry, no link as I can't remember the publication - the one thing that I do remember is that she admitted to being insecure as her career in fashion didn't compare to those of two of her brothers, one of whom was the diplomatic editor of The Guardian and the other runs an international aid agency. I remember it because I'd never seen her admit to anything personal before.
I'll see if I can dig it up.
