Also famous for “Carnival in Flanders” by Preston Sturges with music by Jimmy van Heusen and lyrics by Johnny Burke. It was supposed to be a huge hit and ran for six performances in 1953. She introduced “Here’s That Rainy Day” in the show and made it her signature song. Unfortunately a lot of bands didn’t know the song and she was pissed when she’d enter the room and the band didn’t play it.
She did the wonderful 1987 revival of “Follies” in London even if at 63 she was a bit long in the tooth. Back then, she was still here.
Thomas Mallon’s “Up With the Sun” details a difficult period in her life.

She had her original nose in the Bette Davis movie MR. SKEFFINGTON (44). Her appearance led to no more film work at Warner Brothers.

In a doc about Kaye Ballard I was watching last night (The Show Goes On...), Kaye said that she was in Two on the Aisle with Dolores and Bert Lahr and that Dolores (or her mother) had her songs taken away and given to Dolores.

Dolores had a monster stage mother who meddled in her career.
Dolores, Nanette Fabray and Angela were the three candidates for MAME. The producers chose wisely.

Played Sylvia Fowler in the remake of The Women from 1957, The Opposite Sex. Weird movie in which June Allyson has at least 3 musical numbers (one is dubbed), Dick Shawn has a number, maybe Jeff Richards has a dubbed number, while Dolores and Ann Miller have no numbers (though Dolores sings the title tune over the credits).

Kismet wasn't much of a film but she played the Joan Deiner part, did a good job. She was signed by MGM at the time they were getting rid of many of their biggest stars, she only made 4 movies for them, said it was the best time of her life.
She starred with John Raitt in Carnival in Flanders, won the Tony for this show, that ran six performances (I think this is a record.) She introduced the standard, Here's That Rainy Day.
[quote] In his review for The New York Times, Brooks Atkinson wrote "As an actress [Dolores Gray] is authoritative enough to bring down the house with some of the maudlin songs...In the version prepared for the stage by Preston Sturges it is laborious and banal... As usual, the theatre has lavished a lot of wealth and talent on this hokum. Lucinda Ballard has dressed everybody to the nines... Although Oliver Smith's scenery is cluttered and rather desperate, there is certainly a lot of it.

that is quite the corset on Dolores.

She did an interview with Skip E. Lowe, it's on You Tube. People have various stories about what a bitch she was but she always comes across the opposite in interviews (and not like she's putting it on).
