What was his best Western (not a hotel chain) and what was his best war movie?
I'd say The Longest Day for the best war movie. Not sure for best Western.

The Searchers without a doubt. The Quiet Man is another fantastic Wayne movie.

Red River, El Dorado and Rio Bravo - and yes I'm a Howard Hawks fan

True Grit is one of my all-time favorites.

I like McLintock!, but that may be more due to Maureen O'Hara than Wayne.

Stagecoach, unquestionably. Non-Western, Wake of the Red Witch.

The Sands of Iwo Jima is his only good war movie, because it's the one in which he dies at the end.
(All his war movies are right-wing, racist, and imperialist: The Green Berets, Back to Bataan, etc.)

"The Cowboys" a big hit at Radio City Music Hall.

Another vote for Stagecoach as best western movie

Only one answer. True Grit.

He was rarely any good in modern dress. An embarrassment in “The Green Beret”. “The Longest Day” was mostly set pieces and does not hold up, nor were the performances all that great.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance was really good

Am I mistaken or did he portray Genghis Khan? It’s rarely aired on TCM. Very, very dull despite the otherwise impressive cast.

He did r12, with Susan Hayward The Conqueror.
There's a lot of speculation about how so many involved died of cancer given that the location filming was done near nuclear test areas in Nevada. Or something.
I should look it up before I make more of an ignorant ass of myself.

The Searchers for best Western.
In Harm's Way for best war movie.

Red River also features Monty Clift at his most gorgeous

I will add my favorite John Wayne movie, another western, The Shootist.

Red River because there's a scene where the cowboys are sitting around a campfire and singing. They were good.

Red River is homoerotic, too

THE CONQUEROR is basically a silly Western in Mongol costume. Filmed outside St. George, UT. Of the 220 personnel who worked on the film, 1 out of 5 died from cancer by 1980 (40% total contracted cancer), and many more after 1980.
Wikipedia has the details.

My favorites-
The Cowboys
True Grit
El Dorado
The Shootist
Big Jake
The Sons of Katie Elder
Rio Lobo- not because it’s a great movie. It’s not, but it was the first movie I went to see with my father. I must have been about 7 and I still remember the opening sequence and feeling like the train would come through the screen.

I really like "The High and the Mighty" which is an early airplane disaster movie. He plays a troubled man who doesn't want to pilot anymore. Bonus is a Dimitri Tiomkin score.

I like The High and the Mighty. Jan Sterling and Claire Trevor were both nominated for Best Supporting Actress for their roles in the film

It should considered a camp classic

He was a hot young thing in "The Big Trail" (1930).

Rio Bravo because it has 19 year old Ricky Nelson at his most beautiful .

The High and the Mighty won the Oscar for best original score—over Leonard Bernstein’s On the Waterfront score—and was nominated for best song, even though the song is not in the movie.
