Underrated Skylines (Not NYC, Chicago etc.)

I love Pittsburgh's stunning skyline.

It's fun driving in to the city from the hills, and you're almost above the skyline.

My dad worked on the top floor of the PPG building in Pittsburgh. I remember his office was all glass windows and I would walk right up to the edge and look down. It was very disorienting.

The great thing about Pittsburgh's skyline is that there are a few points where it just sort of magically appears because of the way the roads are. It sort of just pops up from Parkway East.

But the real "reveal" is when you come through the tunnels from the south hills/airport - and then on the other side, boom, you're there. I've been on several buses where people applauded when they came through that other side.

Now, as a driver, coming through that same tunnel is a death twist where you have about 200 feet to figure out which of 4 lanes you need to get into, but still, the skyline is real pretty......

A dull winter day, but you get the concept here. It's beautiful in spring/summer/fall and especially at night.

R18, that's because of the stupid fucking Gentlemen's Agreement, not to build higher than the hat on William Penn on City Hall. While Chicago and NYC were blossoming with art deco masterpiece skyscrapers, we got nothing.

Now they're building cheap flat-top glass and steel buildings that are aesthetically tragic.

What is praise worthy about some of these "skylines"? Sand Diego? Bland squat "towers" on the sea. Cork, a skyline? The one tall building in cork is 17 stories and unremarkable.

by Anonymousreply 30July 29, 2025 8:37 PM

I live here, r25, and it's really difficult to get a picture of the few skyscrapers and make it look like a skyline at all.

by Anonymousreply 31July 29, 2025 8:43 PM

R30 - I only see like 5 tall buildings, although I admit they are nicely spaced out. Wiki says there are over 40 buildings in Atlanta over 400 ft tall - where are they in the skyline??

by Anonymousreply 32July 29, 2025 8:46 PM

That's not even all of Atlanta's skyline. That photo doesn't even include Buckhead (uptown) where plenty of tall buildings stand.

This shot looks south from Buckhead all the way downtown. Only part of the Buckhead skyline is shown.

La Paz is very unusual because you are often looking down at the skyline and when you are level with downtown, you still dont see sky as much as the city scrambling up the mountains behind buildings. it creates a mosaic of buildings of different sizes and heights in your entire field of vision and is dazzling.
