It's for sale.
“English countryside setting”? It’s acres of lawn that needs to be mowed. Nothing English about it. I Don’t even see any landscaping or flower beds. Anyway, it looks like it’s been completely rebuilt and remodeled.

BD can’t afford this.

What *is* BD doing to get by?

The Realtor listing mentions Bette but says the house was built in 2002.

Indeed, OP, whatever happened to Bette Davis’s Maine home?
This ain’t it.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | July 19, 2025 11:27 AM |
It doesn't say her home... it says her estate.

Was the house torn down at some point after that 1955 photo? Surely, the destruction wrought on the house by liquor bottles smashed against walls and pervasive cigarette smoke in the fabrics necessitated a teardown.

OP did you really think the house pictured at R2 is the house you posted. Which looks spanking new and completely different?

R8 the thread title is, as you seem to have missed it, is “Whatever happened to Bette Davis’ Maine home?”
Where did HER home go?

Looking at Historic Aerials, looks like it was torn down around 2000 and this new house was built.

Architectural Digest makes it sound as if the current home is Bette and Gary's former home. It's not.

If you look at a map of Cape Elizabeth, it's between Boat Cove and Spring Cove. About 2 or 3 miles south of Portland Head Light. If you know that area it's about midway between Portland Head and the twin lighthouses where the Lobster Shack is located.

I was once around there and was pulled over by a cop for having a break light out. I asked him about where Bette had lived. he said it had recently been torn down. This was at around that time, too--2002-2003.

*brake

Did you ask the cop his favorite Bette movie?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | July 19, 2025 9:03 PM |
He probably identified with Karl Malden in Dead Ringer, r17.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | July 19, 2025 9:24 PM |
Bette's digs say so much about her.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | July 19, 2025 9:25 PM |
R19. Both are gone. That ain't her house and she ain't here.

This was the actual Bette Davis home, Witchway. The next post will be from Architectural Digest in 1955.

The house looks nice, I wouldn't have torn it down. But apparently they were going for something bigger and more luxurious.

R4, all of her “ministry” videos are still up on her YouTube channel and her website is still active. She’s older now so I don’t know how big a role she still plays in her church.
It’s that non-denominational, Pentecostal, crazy Christian type of Christianity so I doubt she’s raking it in. If she were running a mega church, we would’ve heard about it and she calls herself a minister, but she’s not ordained.
I know her husband was 30 and married a 16 year-old girl, but he always seemed sensible in her book and the three Bette biographies I read. I’ve heard the story about how they got roped into this stuff in the early 1980s, but I never could understand how she got him into it as well.

Didn't Bette always have to support them?
