Barbra Streisand’s Lowest-Charting Album in Decades
For decades, Barbra Streisand could almost always be counted on to reach the top 10 whenever she delivered a new album. Streisand still claims the second-most No. 1 titles on the Billboard 200 among women, with 11, coming in behind only Taylor Swift’s 14 rulers. While she remains a powerhouse and a legend, the era of guaranteed commercial grandeur may be over.
Streisand’s new album The Secret of Life: Partners, Volume II reaches several Billboard rankings after its first full tracking frame – but it fails to approach the top 10 on the main list of the biggest albums in the country.
The Secret of Life debuts on the Billboard 200 at No. 31 in its first full week of availability in the United States. The collaborations project, which features tunes that pair Streisand with stars like Ariana Grande, Mariah Carey and Bob Dylan, moved just under 20,000 equivalent units, according to Luminate. Almost all of those were pure sales, as it racked up a little more than 18,300 purchases.
While The Secret of Life underperforms on the Billboard 200, the set does open at No. 4 on the Top Album Sales chart. It becomes the EGOT winner’s sixteenth title to land inside the highest tier on the ranking. Throughout her career, Streisand has collected 26 placements on the Top Album Sales list and 65 on the Billboard 200.

We're at the same chart spot we got to in 1969 with the first crack at contemporary pop What About Today. Way not worth remembering as an album, but it was the first batch. Now either she gets another Stoney End with the next album or god forbid, a rap collab, in a last ditch hail mary, or she will fade away..

Barbra...make another album with some upbeat songs. Something along the lines of Stoney End, You're the Top and even a Broadway tune or two that is fun gets you moving. We don't want to emote any longer.

R28 It looks like you're referring to 'One Hand Clapping' - a live concert album with his band Wings, which was recorded 50 years earlier in August, 1974, and never released. It debuted / peaked at #74 on the Billboard Hot 200 Albums chart. By my calculations, that's 43 spots lower than Streisand debuted / peaked (so far). Not sure how you consider that 'more relevant'. Do explain for us, please...
For the record, McCartney hasn't released a new studio album of new material since 2020.

I'm happy that the eldergays are happy, but she simply doesn't have the same appeal to the under-50 crowd now that she's so far beyond them. Same goes for Paul McCartney. Of course we all know who these icons are, and we respect their talent, but we're not rushing to pay money for their music.

Gen X here. As far as gay fans go, Barbra was never as big with Gen X gays as she was with Boomer gays. And of course so many Boomer gays died from AIDS which really decimated that audience. Gen X gays were all about Madonna, Barbra was not the big icon she was with us as she was with Boomers. And Millennials were like "Barbra who?" She was pretty irrelevant to them.

Exactly, R36.
Her final run of pop hits was ‘79 to ‘81, from The Main Event thru the Guilty singles and then a #11 hit Coming In And Out Of Your Life. It all sounded much more ‘70s than ‘80s.
She’s free to put out another Duets album at age 83 but it’s absurd to think it would sell well.

Damn. It's only old show tunes queens, older than her 83 years, who care about her. Her last performance on Broadway was 60 years ago (1965). Generations of people know her name as someone who used to be famous, who has a shipping mall in her house, who starred in some wretched films (and one good one by Bogdanovich), as a woman with bad hair and long fingernails and diaphanous gowns. She was too good for everything yet most of the world knows her for Meet The Fockers, FFS.

Darling, Miss Barbra RECORDED quality music until 1970, and again in 1985. Being on Broadway has nothing to do with that. These recordings can still be purchased. Besides me, my mother, grandmother, gay uncle and 20 something nieces all love that period of her career. This is the last time I think she did something that truly could have hit the mainstream in a big way. There were a couple of remixes of the song that were really good as well. I love her but she is the zenith of the deluded boomer artist who thinks that regardless of age they can continue on as if both they and the world has not changed. Most younger people today want steadily churned out disposable musical pablum, not schlocky overproduced ballads. Madonna is another, trying to be an elderly.sex kitten with a grill. Both of these women have incredible legacies, so it must be hard to acknowledge it’s over a la Gloria Swanson.

I’m a geriatric millennial (born 1985 but to see me you’d guess closer to 2005).
I grew up aware of Barbra, but to me she was just a self-important formerly famous person who showed up at award shows to present honorary Oscars etc. I knew she had a “big career”, and as a gayling eventually learned about Funny Girl and her appearance on the Judy Garland Show in the 60s.
It wasn’t until last year when I found her memoir on Spotify that I learned more. I had a couple cross-country drives coming up (flying phobia); I saw that the audiobook was 48 hours long and figured what the hell. When I tell you I was enthralled…
Following along the memoir, I started watching every live performance she talked about, listened to the albums, watched every movie (even Up the Sandbox — blech!). Her memoir made a lifelong fan out of me. I don’t much want to listen to her new music because I prefer to remember her voice as it was pre-2000, but she’s one of the few celebrities who I will actually mourn when they die.
I broke down last week and started a second listen of her book. Six hours in, 42 and change to go, and I couldn’t be more self-satisfied with my decision.

I was born a whole 25 years than spry and fresh R83 (and shouldn't like to speculate on how youthful I look), but R83 provides an excellent description of my perception of Streisand.
She is 18 years older than me, but musical theatre and showtunes always seemed an old-fashioned thing to me, generationally more Boys in the Band -- not that distant in years but a world apart. She always seemed more than a generation older than me -- not 20 years but 30 or more. Streisand always seemed to me that her peak was long in the past. She had a strong voice and talent clearly, but to me she was very old-fashioned and didn't appeal.

R76, you’re absolutely right. We are talking about the same recording Academy who gave Christopher Cross (beat Babs that year) and Billie Eilish clean sweeps in the General Field, but point taken. I just personally think she’s dull, awful, mean and unattractive.
I don’t think I’m alone either. She waited too long to tell her life story and I don’t think enough of her fans are alive anymore to bring in the numbers people were expecting.
She did live long enough to see her flop era though.

I also doubt she cares. She EGOTted when she was like 9 years old, she was the absolute hottest commodity of the 60s and 70s, her popularity extended deep into the naughts. She’s produced and directed major hit films and has gone platinum a zillion times over. She has more money than Christ, along with a devoted husband and a caring son. Neither she nor her workproduct are “forgotten”. She’s truly an American Orignal™️ and the suggestion that she or her huge career is “irrelevant” is risible and is unworthy of a substantive response.

Too much filler. She must have a Botox clinic in her underground mall.

The reason it flopped is NONE OF HER DIE-HARD FANS WANTED ANOTHER DUETS ALBUM.
What we wanted would not have ignited the charts either, but we'd be happy:
"Streisand Sings Sondheim"......."The Arlen I've Never Sung"........"More Than Just FUNNY GIRL: The Jule Styne Album" ......"Streisand: Swingin' Sassy!" ....

"Streisand sings Lil' Kim"
"I used to be scared of the dick, now I throw lips to the shit. Handle it like a real bitch..."

Those underground mall references apparently pass for wit.

She was in denial over no longer being box-office. Had a longer run than most female stars. Now her reliable recording career is sinking in the sun. Will she take a hint and simply enjoy her million$ for her remaining years?

I love this image! Can you imagine?
I can see her bringing luncheon guests down there for a free shot, too.

She needs something to do. How about inventing some new flowers she can name after herself? There’s at least one so far.

Poor Babs. Her album lasted a total of 1 week on the Billboard 200. Debuted at #31 then fell off the chart. Ouch.

That's harsh r121.
As others have said, a lot of her audience has died off.
As far as gay fans go, she was definitely a Boomer gay thing. I'm Gen X and we've never worshipped her like the Boomer guys. We were all about Madonna.

FREE, R119? You must be joking!

White gays, yes.
But black gays had Whitney and Janet.

[quote]so it must be hard to acknowledge it’s over a la Gloria Swanson.
R80 I think you mean 'Norma Desmond.'
Gloria Swanson was nothing like her SUNSET BOULEVARD character.

😂
Funny you say that, because I remember when I first saw the movie poster for NUTS way back when, at first glance I thought it was promoting that BEAUTY AND THE BEAST series, because it premiered in 1987 around the same time.
I've always wondered, why did Streisand approve that poster? Isn't she always conscious of her image?

I've always remembered a quote from Joe Queenan in the old Movieline magazine about Nuts: "If women who looked like Barbra Streisand could make $400 for a blowjob, prostitution would be the most overcrowded profession in the country."

R129 yeah, she's supposed to play a high-priced call girl. 🤣

When I saw NUTS on the Upper West Side when it opened, there is a scene where a glammed up Streisand slithers into a gentleman's club and all the men are lustfully ogling her. The audience (or Barbra fans) started laughing at the absurdity of it all.

"Enough is Enough" is still played in many gay bars and brunches around the world.
The R21 gay brunches made me laugh.

Don’t kid yourselves, Barbra most likely shed a few tears over how this new album spectacularly flopped. After all the effort to put it together, all the publicity she got herself up for - very few gave a shit. She knows it’s over. I’m happy it’s over.

Yeah, she was an expensive call girl. With a face like that. And at fortysomething years old. Her vanity was off the charts in that movie.
