Jennifer Rush’s version peaked at #57 in 1984 meanwhile Celine Dion’s went to #1 in 1993.
It’s now known as a Celine song and Jennifer is forgotten.
Do you wonder if she’s bitter?

Don't know if Jennifer is bitter, but her version is far better than Celine's.

She has a songwriting credit for it so whatever bitterness she had probably subsided as the royalty checks came in.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | July 10, 2025 9:07 PM |
Well, she co-wrote it so probably not.

We all know Celine sang the shit out of this song

I love Jennifer's original, but Laura Branigan's was better than both of those other versions. I really did not care for Celine's.

Jennifer had the biggest selling single of the year in the UK in 1985 and the ninth best selling single of the decade. I doubt it's that forgotten.

Agree with r5.

R5 Brannigan's attempt to caterwaul her way through the climax is risible.

Patti LaBelle’s version of “If You Asked Me To” was superior to Celine’s.

I still want Celine to do White Rabbit

Nobody out sings Celine Dion

I never heard of this woman before, but apparently she was a co-writer of the song. And her recording went to number one in several European countries. So she’s probably not bitter.

R11 She`s stiff competition in the lipsync battle by now.

Anybody mention she cowrote the song?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | July 10, 2025 10:19 PM |
I thought it was Céline's song. I had no idea it was a remake.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | July 10, 2025 10:22 PM |
Also agree with R5. Branigan had a vulnerability to her voice that makes her version more chilling and dramatic, without being overdone like Rush, or overly poised like Dion.

Huey Lewis and Frankie Goes to Hollywood had songs called The Power of Love in the same time frame. I got confused.

R17 I had one too, and it was better than any song Anita Baker ever put out.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | July 10, 2025 11:31 PM |
R9 I have heard Patti being catty about it.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | July 10, 2025 11:41 PM |
Celine's is so vanilla and generic.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | July 11, 2025 12:27 AM |
On the subject of Celine, is there any video more LOL cheesy than this?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | July 11, 2025 1:29 AM |
R21 the thread isn’t about that song

Jennifer Rush's version is haunting to me for one reason and one reason only. I recently saw the Haneke film- The Seventh Continent-
I did not even know who Jennifer Rush was or that this song had been sung by anyone but Branigan and Celine..
It is played during QUITE a scene and it's just very creepy to me now.

Jennifer Rush’s current face is horrifying. Her music video for the song makes her look like she’s having a fit.

Scary^^

r25 Yikes, what the fuck
by Anonymous | reply 27 | July 11, 2025 2:27 AM |
Does anyone know who wrote this song?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | July 11, 2025 2:28 AM |
Jennifer Rush wrote and sang the song.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | July 11, 2025 2:31 AM |
Rush's version went to #1 in many countries around the world but not the US. OP seems to think the Billboard 100 is the only chart that matters.

It is to Americans

[quote] Jennifer Rush wrote and sang the song.
She received credit, along with another woman, for writing the lyrics. The music was written and produced by others. She hardly wrote it.

r32 We call that co-writing, dear.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 11, 2025 3:24 AM |
Blossom Dearie's version was the best.

She didn’t even co-write the music.
