Mattel debuts first diabetic Barbie doll

Mattel has introduced its first Barbie doll representing someone with Type 1 diabetes. The doll, part of the Fashionistas line, includes realistic medical accessories like a continuous glucose monitor and an insulin pump — as well as an outfit that pays homage to diabetes awareness.

The latest Barbie slays in a chic blue polka-dot crop top, ruffled miniskirt, chunky heels and an insulin pump. She is the brand’s first doll with type 1 diabetes.

I work with the diabetic woman who's monitor is so obnoxious and seems to always go off at whatever times it can cause the most disruption and of course this loud unpleasant woman makes a huge fuss every time. I remember one lunch but she just invited herself in one of her friends from another department to our table and they were talking about the cost of their medicine and her friends also diabetic but apparently type 1 felt that type 2 diabetics should have to subsidize their medicine given that their condition is due to their lack of control or at least that's how apparently she saw it.

This made me wonder if there is a schism amongst type 1 and type 2 diabetics and if so it seems that it would be important to make that distinction with this Barbie.
