Hannibal (2001)

Has anyone watched the 2001 sequel to The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal?

Julianne Moore replaced Jodie Foster, while Anthony Hopkins returned as the sophisticated Lecter. The character of Jack Crawford (played by Scott Glenn in the first film) does not appear. Ray Liotta replaced Ron Vawter as Paul Krendler (Vawter died of AIDS in 1994). An uncredited Gary Oldman plays the insane disfigured billionaire child molester Mason Verger.

It is not nearly as good as the first film, but it has some good parts.

Hans Zimmer and Patrick Cassidy composed this beautiful aria for the film based on one of Dante's sonnets, Vide cor Meum.

Terrible film. Shouldn’t have been made.

Ridiculous in the extreme.

Julianne Moore, seriously?! But she looks nothing like Foster.

R6 true, but I think Moore nailed the part very well. But I would’ve loved to have seen Foster come back (her chemistry with Hopkins was unmatched, even by Moore). Mixed bag of a movie. Highlights were Hopkins and Oldman chewing the scenery, Liotta and his male chauvinist pig character, and the ending with the brain and pigs. Didn’t have the suspense and directorial flourishes of Silence, but still worth a viewing. Hopkins regrets doing this and Red Dragon.

Call me a ghoul, but I think the dinner scene with Ray Liotta was funny.

by Anonymousreply 8July 9, 2025 11:58 PM

It was needlessly gruesome.

Foster said it was potentially the biggest payday of her career but she couldn’t bring herself to do it. I don’t think she would’ve harmed anyone.
