Mama’s Family

The network version lasted two seasons with Aunt Fran, Naomi, and Vint’s kids, Buzz and Sonya.

The syndicated version lasted 4 seasons with Vint and Naomi, Iola, and Bubba.

Two words OP:

Bubba and Iola.

by Anonymousreply 1July 9, 2025 7:22 PM

It's on in an hour and a half.

by Anonymousreply 2July 9, 2025 7:23 PM

Where, r2?

by Anonymousreply 3July 9, 2025 7:24 PM

Everyone talks about the Bubba Bulge, but I think he had a cute ass.

by Anonymousreply 4July 9, 2025 7:24 PM

Catchy Comedy, r3.

by Anonymousreply 5July 9, 2025 7:26 PM

Every version!

by Anonymousreply 6July 9, 2025 7:32 PM

Catchy Comedy cycles through both versions. But I prefer the second. I don't like Buzz and Sonja.

by Anonymousreply 7July 9, 2025 7:37 PM

I thought I didn’t like Mama’s Family because I had only seen the network version. The syndicated version was a riot! They finally found the balance that made a successful sitcom.

Betty White and Rue McClanahan’s talents were underused because the writing just wasn’t there.

by Anonymousreply 8July 9, 2025 7:55 PM

The Harper clan of Raytown was one step above trailer park trash.

by Anonymousreply 9July 9, 2025 8:14 PM

I wanted Buzz to come back and be Bubba’s bitch bottom

by Anonymousreply 10July 9, 2025 8:17 PM

Buzz had a cute lil ass on him.

Bubba had the bulge and was dreamy.

by Anonymousreply 11July 9, 2025 8:19 PM

Here’s a podcast interview with Buzz actor Eric Brown. It’s an interesting listen

Allan Kayser on his Bubba Bulge:

I always wore 501s and to this day it’s my pants of choice. I get comments about those jeans all the time, but there’s really not that much going down there. Maybe the camera adds, you know, 10 pounds? [Laughs] They weren’t that snug. Maybe they just fit right? 501s fit me perfectly.

Buzz was a nonentity and Karin Argoud looked too old to be playing a high school student. Bubba was better as he had a backstory.

by Anonymousreply 15July 9, 2025 9:20 PM

Buzz and Sonja were dull and added nothing. It wasn't Rue McClanahan's finest half-hour, because of the weak writing, but "The Golden Girls" was around the corner. Ken Berry's character lost quite a few IQ points between the network and syndicated versions.

by Anonymousreply 16July 9, 2025 9:29 PM

[quote]Everyone talks about the Bubba Bulge, but I think he had a cute ass.

It was the end of the time when they actually understood how to tailor jeans for a guy's body.

by Anonymousreply 17July 9, 2025 9:32 PM

[quote]I thought I didn’t like Mama’s Family because I had only seen the network version. The syndicated version was a riot! They finally found the balance that made a successful sitcom.

The syndicated version toned down Mama's abrasiveness, and unhappy nature. Dumbing down Vint and Naomi also worked. The network version was too much dysfunction and drama added into what was supposed to be a sitcom.

I also preferred the syndicated house better. The network house was like an oversized barn.

by Anonymousreply 18July 9, 2025 9:49 PM

I hated the show.

by Anonymousreply 19July 9, 2025 9:59 PM

R19 = Russell Hitchcock of Air Supply

by Anonymousreply 20July 9, 2025 10:06 PM

Is it just me or was Mama meaner and dumber in the network version? She was just a non-stop crank. She seemed a bit more likable in the syndicated version which was more cartoonish.

by Anonymousreply 21July 9, 2025 10:07 PM

They made the house smaller for the syndicated episodes. I wonder who was really behind the retooling of the show after it was canceled. They did a great job lightening it up and coming up with a smaller quirkier cast. The network eps were just depressing.

by Anonymousreply 22July 9, 2025 10:09 PM

What other older people/character-led shows were there in the 80s? Mama’s Family, The Golden Girls, Murder, She Wrote, Columbo, Matlock, Here’s Lucy. Any others?

by Anonymousreply 23July 9, 2025 10:11 PM

Father Dowling.

by Anonymousreply 24July 9, 2025 10:11 PM

They only ended the show because they had 100 episodes, which is what you needed for syndication. They made their own hours and did what they wanted when they switched to syndication. I think they might have been the first syndicated sitcom and it was a hit. The network show was a dud. Go figure. Betty White came back for one syndicated Mama’s Family episode and Rue was killed off. Rue hated Mama’s Family and loathed Vicki Lawrence.

by Anonymousreply 25July 9, 2025 10:13 PM

Betty and Rue rarely brought up that they had worked together before in Mama’s Family before Golden Girls. They acted like they just met each other in passing.

by Anonymousreply 26July 9, 2025 10:13 PM

[quote] The network eps were just depressing.

The Family sketches on The Carol Burnett show were truly dark if one looks beyond the comedic aspects. They provided a glimpse into the dark corners of human behavior.

by Anonymousreply 27July 9, 2025 10:14 PM

R27, I was going to say that they were trying to stay with the depressing Family sketches but the network eps were even darker. Badly lit sets. The DVDs are interesting as Harvey Korman, who directed the show, originally opened each episode.

by Anonymousreply 28July 9, 2025 10:24 PM

For more Bubba bulge, he was in a movie called Hot Chili that aired every now and then on USA Up All Night. I can't find it streaming anywhere, but there was a scene with him him in tighty whities.

by Anonymousreply 29July 9, 2025 10:30 PM

R23, Here’s Lucy was in the late sixties and early seventies.

Life with Lucy was in the eighties - and it was a NATIONAL SENSATION.

To me, Vint and Naomi are what made the show great. And N's antics at the Food Circus always made for a laugh. I too dislike Vint's kids. Both ugly, and perpetual pissed off.

by Anonymousreply 31July 9, 2025 10:43 PM

Mama's Family is on the Logo channel all day on Fridays and Sundays.

by Anonymousreply 32July 9, 2025 10:55 PM

[quote]What other older people/character-led shows were there in the 80s? Mama’s Family, The Golden Girls, Murder, She Wrote, Columbo, Matlock, Here’s Lucy. Any others?

Later, in the '90s, there was "Diagnosis: Murder" with Dick Van Dyke.

by Anonymousreply 33July 9, 2025 10:57 PM

Fran was originally written to be the one that frequently clashed with Mama, but Carol Burnett saw Dorothy Lyman as Opal on All My Children and created Naomi.

Carol Burnett’s divorce from Joe Hamilton who was the EP of mamas family was getting ugly and she only appeared in one episode and did a voiceover for another.

by Anonymousreply 34July 9, 2025 11:05 PM

[quote]but the network eps were even darker

What did you find so dark, r28?

by Anonymousreply 35July 9, 2025 11:08 PM

[quote]but Carol Burnett saw Dorothy Lyman as Opal on All My Children and created Naomi.

I doubt Carol created her. The story goes that both Vicki and Carol were huge fans of All My Children and got her for the show.

by Anonymousreply 36July 10, 2025 6:34 PM

Dorothy Lyman is two years older than Vicki Lawrence.

by Anonymousreply 37July 10, 2025 6:34 PM

I loved Dorothy Lyman on All My Children - the only time I ever watched that drippy show.

Once when some talk show had the cast on - Lyman talked about how hectic her schedule was flying back and forth between NYC and LA doing both shows.

Lawrence said: "Yea.....that's why we called her AMC.....All My Cash."

by Anonymousreply 38July 10, 2025 6:38 PM

Bubba went nude in a movie too. He now has grandchildren. He married a woman from Raytown. No, really. Here’s a great interview with him. He basically left Hollywood and did every job imaginable and moved around the country. They have a photo of him delivering packages.

Vicki Lawrence put him in those jeans.

by Anonymousreply 41July 10, 2025 7:07 PM

And probably got him out of them, too.

by Anonymousreply 42July 10, 2025 7:12 PM

I rubbed my dick many a time while looking at the Bubba Bulge!

by Anonymousreply 43July 10, 2025 7:14 PM

Who owns the rights to Hot Chili and can we petition for a 4K restoration? I need nude Bubba in hi-def

by Anonymousreply 44July 10, 2025 7:26 PM

Damn I cant find that Hot Chili ever got a home video/DVD release. And it's not available on Amazon.

by Anonymousreply 45July 10, 2025 9:46 PM

R34 Wrong.

Carol did a few episodes of the network versions. After that, she fell out with Joe Hamilton. The syndicated version happened two years later. Carol never appeared on the syndicated version at all, because she was angry that Vicki did it with Joe. Betty While only appeared once on the syndicated version.

I liked the network version better because Eunice was on it from time to time. The syndicated version came off as low rent.

by Anonymousreply 46July 10, 2025 10:31 PM

Incidentally, Dorothy Lyman directed half of THE NANNY's episodes (74 out of 146) mainly from Seasons 2-5.

by Anonymousreply 47July 10, 2025 10:45 PM

Poor Iola never got her cherry busted. Sigh.

by Anonymousreply 48July 10, 2025 10:46 PM

[quote]I liked the network version better because Eunice was on it from time to time.

A little Eunice went a long way. I find the original "Family" sketches from "The Carol Burnett Show" pretty unwatchable now. But then, I find a lot of the sketches from the original variety show pretty unwatchable now, with the exception of the better movie parodies.

by Anonymousreply 49July 11, 2025 12:20 AM

R46 not wrong.

Carol appeared in s handful of episodes in the first season, and on the first episode of season 2 and did a voiceover for the mamas birthday episode. Betty White ended up getting written in a few more shows because of it.

by Anonymousreply 50July 11, 2025 12:32 AM

Dorothy Lyman as Opal Gardner was a hoot!

by Anonymousreply 51July 11, 2025 1:08 AM

R50 yes wrong. You said Eunice was only in one episode of season 1. She was in a few of them. Dummy.

by Anonymousreply 52July 11, 2025 1:21 AM

[quote]and did a voiceover for the mamas birthday episode.

That episode was on today. Vicki really shines in it.

by Anonymousreply 53July 11, 2025 1:24 AM

They should do one now. Of course Mama needs to be a ghost, but it could be funny.

by Anonymousreply 54July 11, 2025 1:27 AM

Let's see. Eunice shows up:

At Vint and Naomi's wedding Part 1 and Part 2

Making Gooseberry jam with Mama, Ellen and Naomi.

Having positive thoughts at the Pepper Pot Playhouse with special guest star Gloria DeHaven.

Landing in "the jug" with Mama and a very funny hooker.

Is that it? Seems like there should be more.

by Anonymousreply 55July 11, 2025 1:45 AM

Did Dorothy Lyman ever not play white trash? She seems to be a lesbian today.

by Anonymousreply 56July 11, 2025 1:46 AM

Hot Chili is available to watch in full on YouTube for free.

by Anonymousreply 57July 11, 2025 1:47 AM

R56 how does she seem to be a lesbian today? Just because she hasn't remarried after her second divorce?

by Anonymousreply 58July 11, 2025 1:56 AM

I always wondered why Dorothy didn't direct more after getting good notices for A Coupla White Chicks.

R55 oh yeah. The Gooseberry jam episode with Eunice was season 2 too.

Do you stand corrected R50?

by Anonymousreply 61July 11, 2025 2:06 AM

Mama's family reminded me of the sleepy Little suburb I grew up in and around and my aunt earlene sort of took the mama roll in our family and that she was sort of a mafia don. She was consulted with about pretty much anything mainly because she was the only one that really seemed to have any money and owned a house.

Anybody down on their luck could just go crash at earlenes. in fact that's where my dad first went after my mom kicked him out we ended up there ourselves a few years later after my mom had abandoned us briefly and then kidnapped us back from my dad with a new stepdad and pregnant.

She also always had some sort of scam going or dealing in stolen goods such as lawn mowers and Nintendo's that have been stolen and she would fence. She was also someone you could go to that would trade your food stamps for cash usually I think like 50 cents on the dollar.

by Anonymousreply 62July 11, 2025 2:10 AM

heinous

by Anonymousreply 63July 11, 2025 2:41 AM

R46/52 rimmed Aunt Effie after she ate a few of Merv Griffins famous chili dogs.

by Anonymousreply 64July 11, 2025 2:55 AM

R58, she lives with a woman and posts as a couple.

by Anonymousreply 65July 11, 2025 3:22 AM

R60, link doesn’t work.

by Anonymousreply 66July 11, 2025 3:24 AM

R62, were you the banjo player in Deliverance?

by Anonymousreply 67July 11, 2025 4:15 AM

Ms Lyman didn’t just turn gay. You don’t just turn gay, Rose.
