Gay dads give up* modern life to be in Chip and Joanna Gaines show, BACK TO THE FRONTIER

Three families live for 8 weeks in the shadow of the Rockies, just like people did back in the good old days: none of the conveniences of the 2020s. One family includes Joe Riggs and Jason Hanna, fathers of twins. The dads are in great shape. The show? Not so much according to the review I'll post below.

But I'll watch to see these modern day Michael Landons.

The review

I'll give it a go, that family in your preview image looks adorable as hell. Plus, I don't think I've ever really seen real gay dads with their kids on a reality show before.

by Anonymousreply 2July 9, 2025 11:41 AM

I'm actually impressed. Having a married gay couple with children is very risky for a Chip and Joanna brand show especially in the current climate.

Anyway, there was a show like this a few decades ago. The Internet was a thing then, but everyone wasn't addicted to social media and their phones like they are today, so this will be a much bigger deal in that sense. But they need to go hardcore with them like they did on that other show. That means making them kill their own chickens and all that. It's pointless if the participants know they can easily opt out of things.

by Anonymousreply 3July 9, 2025 12:13 PM

Shocked and impressed that they allowed/agreed to this.

by Anonymousreply 4July 9, 2025 12:16 PM

I loved that show that was on PBS. I think at the end the historian said they all would have starved to death.

by Anonymousreply 5July 9, 2025 12:19 PM

R5 = “gay representation is great and also they would all be eaten by wolves”

by Anonymousreply 6July 9, 2025 1:58 PM

I'll definitely check it out. I want to see how the different families interact.

by Anonymousreply 7July 9, 2025 3:32 PM

They can use a scrimshawed ox rib as a butt plug!

by Anonymousreply 8July 9, 2025 3:34 PM

Poor anal hygiene will ensue!

by Anonymousreply 9July 9, 2025 3:57 PM

Chip and Joanna probably plan on setting their cabin on fire. Praise Jesus!!!

by Anonymousreply 10July 9, 2025 4:16 PM

So how are they going to work? Remotely?

by Anonymousreply 11July 9, 2025 5:19 PM

I shall name my children Ship and Lap

by Anonymousreply 12July 9, 2025 5:27 PM

I shall name *my* children Dacron and Tureen.

by Anonymousreply 13July 9, 2025 5:30 PM

FINALLY— Chip and Joanna discover that gays are people too.

It only took a decade

by Anonymousreply 14July 9, 2025 5:33 PM

Chip and Joanna have a permanent dispensation from their church because they are LOADED.

by Anonymousreply 15July 9, 2025 5:46 PM

Chip and Joanna cast a gay couple. 🤷🏻?

by Anonymousreply 16July 9, 2025 11:54 PM

I think you guys are referring to this PBS trilogy:

- FRONTIER HOUSE (2002) set in 1883 Montana

- COLONIAL HOUSE (2004) set in 1628 Massachusetts

- TEXAS RANCH HOUSE ((2006) set in 1867 Texas

At the end of each series, the families were judged by a panel of experts and historians on their likelihood of survival.

Also, Oprah devoted an episode of COLONIAL HOUSE on her show and even attempted to live with them, joined by galpal Gayle.

Oprah’s pussy is just as delicious in “1841” as it is in 2021!

by Anonymousreply 18July 10, 2025 12:46 AM

In OP's pic, I can't tell which gay dad is the top.

Which is frustrating.

I need to know who to root for.

by Anonymousreply 19July 10, 2025 3:09 AM

I know Chip and Joanna got flak for attending an Evangelical church led by a homophobic pastor, but have either ever been expressly homophobic otherwise? Joanna has been an interior designer for decades, so she's no doubt associated with many gays.

by Anonymousreply 20July 10, 2025 3:21 AM

I wouldn't trust them.

by Anonymousreply 21July 10, 2025 3:29 AM

I don't know if they've ever been homophobic or not. It just surprises (and impresses) me a bit that they would sign off on it given their brand. I'm sure there are many gays and allies that like Magnolia, but HGTV shows (where they got their start) often attract the conservative housewife. That type of viewer might be OK with a catty gay couple getting home tours on househunters, but gay dads with kids is usually too much for her to handle. So, I find it a pleasant surprise that this would come out under their brand. There's only three families on the show and one of them has gay dads and one of the others is black. Pretty cool.

If wonder if Billy J. Brawner is going to get a show. He and his man just bought a (beautiful) fixer upper in the Berkshires. Now he's an interesting story. Married to a woman, six kids, comes out, he and wife are still besties, moved to NYC, new man and now moving to the Berkshires. Anyway, he and his son were playing basketball with Chip and Joanna the other day, and he used to be (still is?) the photography director for Magnolia. So they're obviously still close.

by Anonymousreply 23July 10, 2025 11:30 PM

Gee, Chip and Joanna attend and financially support the church led by the homophobic pastor, so what do you think? They've also never spoken out against the homophobic pastor, either.

by Anonymousreply 24July 10, 2025 11:40 PM

Bump

by Anonymousreply 25July 15, 2025 3:09 AM

Whale oil for lube!

by Anonymousreply 26July 15, 2025 3:02 PM

R22 - acceptance of gays nationally is in the upper 70 percentages. The states with the lowest are who you suspect - but they're still at low 60s. It's obviously higher in the large metros which is the largest percentage of TV viewers.

Nobody should be bending a knee to this batshit 25%-30% - which by the way, it is this unshiftable hardcore MAGA Republican base you see in every voting cycle for decades. These are the same people who thought Nixon was fantastic and McCarthy got a raw deal. Yes - over 25% of the US supported Nixon after he was impeached and left in disgrace.

We've always kowtowed to this loud, ultra right-wing 30% and I'm sick of it.

I agree with r27. They always say this is the backlash for the “gay agenda” being shoved on them for 30 years, but they weren’t tolerant or nice people to start with.

by Anonymousreply 28July 15, 2025 3:40 PM

So brave! 😵‍💫🧐

by Anonymousreply 29July 15, 2025 4:00 PM

I feel like they did this on purpose and leaked it to get press for the new TV show. The Magnolia channel used to be called the DIY channel.

"The network experienced a decrease in viewership since its launch as a revamped DIY Network. It's also worth noting that Magnolia Network is available to fewer pay television households compared to its peak."

They're bombing and need something so people know it exists. I had no idea they had their own channel? Not like I'm going to watch it.

And yes - they're vagueness about their beliefs and politics shows that they are conservatives in almost every way, but they don't want to get any backlash over it.

I don't like them - their charm once worked for me years ago, but it didn't seem real.

by Anonymousreply 30July 15, 2025 7:55 PM

R30 Is there any other goddamn reason to appear on reality TV?

by Anonymousreply 31July 15, 2025 8:45 PM

R31 - pushing a 'controversial' narrative about a gay couple is a PR stunt. Reality TV is what it is. But this is extra and it's forced to get exposure.

by Anonymousreply 32July 15, 2025 9:34 PM

Remember when Chip and Reichlin appeared as a gay couple on The Amazing Race? And they won?

Every week, they'd celebrate with a manly hug or a handshake. CBS wouldn't let them kiss.

by Anonymousreply 33July 16, 2025 4:34 AM

Did anyone watch it?

by Anonymousreply 34July 21, 2025 3:12 PM

Usually the gays on the Magnolia Network are married to women.

Oh look, a new way to look at the gays. Dress them up in frontier outfits and watch them perform. I bet they are HILARIOUS!

[Quote] Remember when Chip and Reichlin appeared as a gay couple on The Amazing Race? And they won? Every week, they'd celebrate with a manly hug or a handshake. CBS wouldn't let them kiss.

The big controversy was that The Amazing Race listed them as “husbands” when gay marriage wasn’t legal yet.

by Anonymousreply 37July 21, 2025 7:47 PM

They wouldn’t let the most recent gays kiss either.

by Anonymousreply 38July 21, 2025 9:39 PM

Nor did they let the gays suck cock
