I’ve got tons.
As a gay person I listen to other gays.
I’m not like most gays or DL who just listen to women and call heterosexual women “gay music”. Sure but it’s like saying Justin Timberlake is black music.
But whatever lol

Andy Bey, a renowned jazz singer who died just a few months ago at 85 after living with HIV for decades, is one of the true greats. Sublime.
Here he is singing Nick Drake, who I’d put in the Maybe Gay category.

I have never heard anything about Nick Drake being gay.

R25, it’s long been a rumor, but there’s nothing to substantiate it. I think it’s more that he’s seen as sensitive (and in the later years, morose). I’d guess mildly heterosexual or borderline asexual.

I just returned from a brief trip to New York, where I saw The Man Who Came to Dinner, and the latest Jerome Kern tuner, Very Warm For May. There was one really good song in the latter, "All In Fun," but the rest of the score (and show) was a snooze. I'm sure Kern and Hammerstein will do better with their next show!
The play was really funny. I went to the stage door to collect a few autographs afterward, and ended up having a nice conversation with a charming young actor named Gordon Merrick who played the son. He seemed disenchanted with acting, and talked about taking up writing. He was a bit cagey about the kinds of stories he wanted to tell, but invited me to join him for lunch the next day to continue the conversation. Sadly, I had to catch my train home the next morning so I guess I'll never know...

Check out Hifi Sean & David McAlmont, 1990s pop stars who now record as a duo. Their 2023 "Happy Ending" album is spectacularly good.
McAlmont was always out and has a stunning voice, probably best remembered on his and Bernard Butler's 1995 UK hit "Yes".
Sean Dickson had been the lead singer/guitarist/keyboardist in The Soup Dragons; he came out in the early 2000s and is also a dance music producer.

The Aluminum Group, a band out of Chicago led by two gay brothers (who take turns singing leads).
They were similar to Everything But The Girl, maybe Stereolab, with a pinch of Bacharach thrown in.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | July 26, 2025 1:36 AM |
People won't like this, but I can only listen to gay male singers if they sound straight. If they sound like gay men singing, I have an aversion to them. I don't care if I'm criticized for it because you have no control over who you like or don't like.

How does someone sing "gay" r82?
by Anonymous | reply 85 | July 26, 2025 3:45 AM |
R84 Do you like everything? At least I'm being honest. I'm not saying I don't like them as people. There's a sort of overemotional singing style some gay male singers have, like Sam Smith or Adam Lambert, that really turns me off. I like Troye Sivan, he just sounds like a boy band singer.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | July 26, 2025 3:46 AM |
Labi Siffre. Not only does he possess the voice of an angel, but his lyrics make you feel the best things about yourself. An incredible artist. An openly gay man who universally appeals to humanity. There's nothing separatist about his songs, nor does he come from an angle that suggests he feels that he is "other" than anyone who may relate to his music. His songs are open & proud without veering to into boasting, self-pity, or hyper grandiosity. Over the past few years his music has crept into the mainstream here & there, which is so well deserved.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | July 26, 2025 7:59 PM |
R88 I just recently discovered his work! Love it.
Most of us would know his work only from the Madness cover of "It Must Be Love" (with a cameo by Labi himself in the video). But he's got much more in his catalog. He's unique, but I'd sort of put him and Joan Armatrading in a category by themselves - very one of a kind singer-songwriters with great lyrics and a singular point of view.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | July 27, 2025 1:35 AM |
R89...The Joan Armtrading comparison is brilliant & spot on! Love Joan. Her rabid & loyal fanbase is quite inspiring. She's enjoyed their support from the beginning. They're such enthusiasts of her work, making it so tempting for future fans to explore her work. An artist who truly about nothing other than her craft.
