I saw “Wicked” finally

I wasn’t thrilled by it. Maybe I should see it on stage?

Granted, I saw it on a plane seat back so it was small and not crystal clear and the audio played the songs too loud. But the songs didn’t really strike me as anything great and I’m a huge fan of both “Godspell” and “Pippin”. But they were decades ago.

One thing I didn’t like was all the reaction shots of the crowds. The extras really overdid it when they were supposed to be awed, or frightened, or happy. And were there men dressed as students at the University? Or were those just really ugly women?

A plane is the absolute worst place to watch a movie for the first time. That's on you.

This didn’t work as a movie. I was bored out of my mind in the theater and I love musicals. It was just endless and people were sighing. This works much better viewed in chunks with breaks in the middle. Maybe it would’ve been better as episodes in a TV series.

The beginning and especially the end were great. I don't regret not seeing it in the theater EXCEPT for the finale. I kinda gasped with excitement. I know, Mary.

It is a three-hour SNOOZEFEST on Broadway, and very, very loud.

The appeal of this show eludes me and I like musicals.

I agree with you about the score. Defying Gravity is the only song from Wicked that I ever listen to independently. Although I've never seen the stage show, I do think the movie has an emotional heft to it, but I've mostly forgotten about it since seeing it in theaters. It has nothing to do with the cast, the narrative just isn't that engaging.

Saw the original cast on B’way and liked the show a lot. Adele Dazeem sounded great!!! She still sounds great, by the way……I saw Redwood a few months ago. Didn’t see the movie, and probably won’t.

Maybe the first film starring a human-alien hybrid to break $500M

Just saw it. Maybe the most beautiful to look at movie I've ever seen. And I enjoy the references to the 1939, and the dynamic between the leads.

However, the main story about the animals not being allowed to speak is clunky and it doesn't really flow.

I agree the music is nothing great. I love Godspell and Pippin, but this is nowhere close.

One biggest problem is the music is produced within an inch of its like. The spectacular voices on these ladies are swallowed up by the production- it just makes them sound less impressive.

I think Errvivo’s vouch is more pleasant than Menzel’s… no screeching.

Other than a couple of musical numbers (Defying Gravity being one), "Wicked" is meant for 12-year old girls.

I see a lot of theatre. I thought 'Wicked" was forgettable.

I saw it on Broadway and was bored to death.

It was more boring than another popular three-hour hit people seem to adore.

Wicked was worse....and loud!

by Anonymousreply 11July 30, 2025 10:05 PM

It was a steaming pile of shit! Seriously, I hated it!! None of the songs were memorable, and I cringed every time Jonathan Bailey was on screen. I want those hours refunded on my lifespan.

by Anonymousreply 12July 30, 2025 10:07 PM

It's on Amazon Prime - not my thing but I was goin to check it out....maybe not now. Better things on my to watch list.

by Anonymousreply 13July 30, 2025 10:20 PM

Wicked has a few good songs and that's about it.

Keep in mind that the movie you saw is almost as long as the Broadway show, but it's just the first half! When finished, the movie version will be much longer than the Broadway show, which is a very unfortunate thing.

R9 I agree. But again I think the music producers failed her. But she is outstanding.

by Anonymousreply 15July 30, 2025 10:33 PM

I've gotten through about 20 mins so far.

by Anonymousreply 16July 30, 2025 10:37 PM

Erivo is not attractive and the green sheen makes it harder to look at her.

by Anonymousreply 17July 30, 2025 10:43 PM

"Is it popular? Other people like it? THEN I [bold]HATE[/bold] IT!!!"

by Anonymousreply 18July 31, 2025 12:41 AM

I've never seen the stage production, but I loved the movie. I watched it on my laptop computer, but I wished I had seen it at a cinema, perhaps IMAX. Both lead actresses were excellent in their roles, and Cynthia's voice...wow!

by Anonymousreply 19July 31, 2025 12:50 AM

R18 I didnt hate it. It just didn't quite hang together for me. It was definitely beautiful to look at.
