The birds have gone MAGA

I watched 2 birds build a nest 2 months ago under my porch- they expertly chose a place covered on 3 sides and where the column has this piece that the next could sit on- Very brilliant creatures . These birds were small and brown-- Anyway- 3 weeks ago the birdies hatched and I have watched the mom feed them diligently-- they were starting to get larger and more active in the nest and I was wondering if one would fall out..

Today I hear a commotion and there is this larger bird (about twice the size of whatever breed this was) in the nest. The mother bird was going crazy trying to get him out but the other bird was too large.. I tried as well.. I did not see it peck at them , but it was so large that it was sitting on these poor things.. Anyway-- Its clear that they are dead.. The poor mother was in there with her nose nudging at each one (I cannot see them anymore) and tweeting away... And oddly enough she brought another bird with her later, which I suspect was the one who helped her build the nest.

Between the heat, the country, and this- I am fucking seriously depressed.

Birds don't exist.

A forum user described observing a pair of small brown birds build a nest under their porch. After the chicks hatched and were growing, a larger bird invaded the nest, likely crushing the chicks by sitting on them. The mother bird tried to defend the nest and later returned with what appeared to be her mate, visibly distressed. The poster expressed sadness and depression over witnessing the loss, compounded by the oppressive heat and rural setting.

R2- Are you serious? I am not in a rural area (New England/seaside) hour from Boston-

But the rest is identical.

I cannot tell if you are being funny but that fucking bird crushed the babies?

Fucking hell.

They’ve always been like this, across the millennia — some species are notorious for it.

Birds evolved from reptiles and their brains are not that dissimilar, despite the pretty feathers and lovely singing.

I hate AI so much I’m tempted to zap R2.

by Anonymousreply 6July 7, 2025 3:00 PM

WTF is R2? AI slop?

There is that one bird that will drop an egg off in an existing nest, and when all the eggs hatch, the mother doesn't know the difference and feeds all the baby birds. The interloper bird is much larger and grows much faster and ends up consuming the majority of the food brought to the nest. The other birds get kicked out of the nest or starve.

^If Elon Musk were a bird.

I just wanted you to know that some people have war in their countries.

Those are cuckoos, R8, but the chicks don't become huge overnight and they push the other ones out of the next almost immediately.

Hi all~ I was banned for 24 hours for this post.. WTF? It was a true story..

(I probably should not have mentioned the birds going you know what..

Anyway, it kind of broke my heart. I arrived to the scene late, but I am pretty sure that bird may have basically sat on them to crush them..

by Anonymousreply 12July 8, 2025 8:17 PM

Maybe the word "MAGA" in the title offended the few but tenacious Trumpers in here. Anybody can get anybody else banned if they want to game the system, it's a major flaw.

I would have been very sad too, OP. That said... we ascribe more cuteness to birds than they actually possess.

by Anonymousreply 13July 8, 2025 8:29 PM

It's ridiculous to get banned over this, but I don't think mentioning MAGA was the only reason. The problem is that nowadays people treat f&f like it's a downvote on reddit. They read something that sparks an internal negative reaction, so they reactively "downvote" by hitting f&f. Which, of course, is ridiculous "kill the messenger" thinking. On reddit it just bumps you further down in the replies but here it almost always bans the OP for, at best, highly dubious reasons. People could be "mad" at the bird who killed the chicks and so they "downvote" the story, and OP, with an f&f vote that leads to his banning. Just absurd.

Muriel really needs to implement a better system.

by Anonymousreply 14July 8, 2025 8:52 PM

Yeah "F&F" is beyond obscure unless you've been here 20 years. i remember when that was an actual DL thread category -- a literal rubbish bin. Muriel would pick threads right up from the main categories and set them down in Flames & Freaks. Fun times.

Some clearer icon or word on that button would be a good idea. I never thought of newer DLers thinking they were just saying "dislike" to a topic and not realizing they were censoring the poster, but of course.

by Anonymousreply 15July 8, 2025 9:22 PM

F&fs used to prompt redtags. Remember redtags? Muriel would step in and flick a switch in the Batcave or whatever, and the offending troll's posts throughout every thread would have a bold red tag like a label, usually something humorous and descriptive of their posting style. It was actually very entertaining.

But clearly that system required human intervention and monitoring. This was years before AI so obviously a human was assessing the body of posts and thinking up a funny and descriptive tag. Now it's all automated, plus the you ger reddit-brained posters are fucking it up further with "downvotes."
