What have you learned recently?
I learned that the Normans were Norse Vikings. Well, duh. Nor-men. Or nord. The Normans from France who conquered England.
How did I not get the memo decades ago?
911 – Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte. Viking Rollo is granted land in France by King Charles the Simple.
1028 – Birth of William of Normandy
1035 – William becomes Duke of Normandy
October 14, 1066 – Battle of Hastings
That's a pretty fast move from immigrants, to French Dukes (who were mostly viking blood), to English Monarchs.
And apparently the Normand Dukes before William didn't have children with their French wives, or if they did, they didn't record those children. They had viking concubines and passed power to their bastard viking sons.
So the VIKING Normans were the conquerors.
