The lyrics go like this:
"Rock and roll every night
Underneath the neon signs
On Sunset, on Sunset"
"Lights!" Why didn't she sing "lights?" An easy rhyme! But "signs?" Come on!

Because she’s deeper than an easy rhyme

R1 "Lights" vs. "signs." So deep.
Donna didn't write the song, either. It was written by Pete Bellotte, Harold Faltermeyer, and Keith Forsey.

I asked Donna about it shortly before she died, OP. She said she did it just to annoy you.

R3 Well, she didn't write it, so don't blame it on Donna.

Reminds me of Beyonce's "Irreplaceable."
"I could have another man in a minute.
And in fact, he'll be here in a minute."
Really? You couldn't even be bothered to think of a different word?
"And my heart's renewed, I'm deep in it?"
"He's goin' for my heart, and he'll win it?"
Lazy, lazy, lazy.

I don't know the song, but I have lived off Sunset for nearly twenty years. Up until recently, neon signs is the more appropriate description compared to neon lights.
Part of the charm of driving down Sunset from Crescent Heights through Doheny, is the endless billboards advertising new movies and TV shows. Sure, they're lighted up, but it's the sign itself, not the lights, that tends to draw in one's focus.

R6 So maybe the lyric should've been "Showbiz pros, lookin fine, underneath the neon signs..."

She was a studio singer who got a lucky break and blew it. Bad decisions. She had no persona, career ambition or focus.
Just a pretty face, a great voice and a few classic hits.
