Rosie O'Donnell's acting in Riding The Bus With My Sister

Dear lord, how did the camera people manage to keep a straight face during filming?

I swear, I could not have done it.

This is next-level bad.

No wonder she had to leave the country.

This movie destroyed the careers of Anjelica Huston, Andie Macdowell, and Rosie O'Donnell.

I must admit, I watch this movie every so often (or at least the Rosie scenes, not the whole movie) and can't stop laughing uncontrollably. It's like a SNL skit. They should have passed it off as a comedy.

This really backfired on Rosie's attempt to make this her 'dramatic actress' project.

Regardless, Rosie was playing a real person.. She met her, hung out with and her interpretation is how the real Beth is. Growing up she was called severely retarded, Now she's diagnosed as Autistic,

I love the first comment under the video at op's link.

"This movie has aged well."

Seriously? Is that person on crack??

by Anonymousreply 13July 5, 2025 4:17 PM

r13 I was thinking this movie was in the 80s or something. Wow.

by Anonymousreply 14July 5, 2025 4:17 PM

Am I missing something? It's extreme, but there are people that disabled in real life and if that's what she's supposed to be portraying it's actually pretty accurate.

by Anonymousreply 15July 5, 2025 4:20 PM

Opie and Anthony’s (I know, I know) Jim said when this came out, “she’s not acting. This is the same voice she used to goof on the slow kids back in Commack!”

It was funny when Huston was going around promoting her two volumes of autobiography (terrible, btw) she made sure nobody mentioned this. According to her the only movie she ever directed was Bastard out of Carolina.

by Anonymousreply 16July 5, 2025 4:45 PM

R15 Yeah, I guess you're missing her bad acting.

by Anonymousreply 22July 5, 2025 7:24 PM

I guess someone said to Rosie:

"This dramatic turn will be great for your career. It will be your Emmy you've been craving - the one that will show the world you're a serious actress aside from being a comic. It will do for you what 'Friendly Fire' did for Burnett. What 'Stone Pillow' did for Lucy. This is your moment to shine, Rosie."

And Rosie believed it.

Have to say, this performance may be questionable. but Rosie is brilliant in the series MILF, playing the lead character's (probably bipolar) mother. Not kidding, a masterful performance.

by Anonymousreply 30July 5, 2025 8:51 PM

In the trailer at R1, I can't believe that they actually used the R-word to promote the film.

From the film’s Wikipedia page:

“The film, like the book, is about the time Simon spent with her sister Beth, who has a developmental disability,”

Excuse me?

A review on IMDB:

I lived in the room above the laundromat used in the movie. The day before they started filming I broke my leg at work. I was a roofer in those days, and managed to shoot myself in the tibia with my nail gun (honest, it shouldn't have fired without my finger on the trigger but it did).

I had no idea they were filming a movie. And first thing in the morning I hobbled down the stairs and the first person I saw was Rosie O'Donnell, having a conversation with my landlord and when she saw me she asked what happened, I told her I was a rooter and broke my leg. Apparently everyone in my building had been informed about the movie except myself, my landlord figured I'd be working those hours and didn't tell me about it. I was then informed that I either had to stay home all day, or stay behind the yellow tape. I told them that wasn't possible as I had a doctor appointment and had nowhere else to go in the meanwhile and I will come and go as I please, and needed access to my bathroom.

Geeze, they solved the problem by giving me a stool right behind Anjelica Huston for the whole 3 days of the shoot!! I was able to talk to her all the time, but didn't... I listened and watched. When she didn't appear busy I talked to her and mentioned her Grandfather and asked how it felt to be in Canada again.

She was just so down to earth, and didn't treat me like an irritating pest.

I don't recommend breaking your leg as a way to meet Hollywood stars, but you can't get Andie MacDowell to sign your cast unless you do.

by Anonymousreply 43July 6, 2025 7:42 PM

It was filmed in Toronto?

by Anonymousreply 44July 6, 2025 8:04 PM

Her grandfather, Walter Huston?

by Anonymousreply 45July 6, 2025 8:19 PM

I liked Rosie in Another Stakeout and Exit to Eden

by Anonymousreply 46July 6, 2025 8:45 PM

with the right director, Rosie could give a very good performance

by Anonymousreply 47July 6, 2025 8:50 PM

In the water, she's a very skinny lady.

by Anonymousreply 48July 6, 2025 8:53 PM

I liked her in Nip/Tuck. She was extremely convincing as a trashy powerball winner.

I've never heard of Another Stakeout, r46. I'll have to check that out.

Rosie O'Donnell's bad acting aside....

The dialogue for the movie was fucking horrible, too!

What was the point of the story?

I just watched a short clip, and it was boring as hell.

Of all people, I would never have expected Anjelica Huston to make a terrible movie like this.

Did she think it would win her an award, or something?

This reminds me of a story from a previous workplace. I was introduced to someone I was sure had special needs. After shaking their hand, I thought "it's really great this company is so progressive when it comes to hiring those with developmental disabilities!". And a minute later, the guy sitting next to me goes "isn't his Boston accent so cool?". I was secretly mortified and laughing simultaneously.
