Dear lord, how did the camera people manage to keep a straight face during filming?
I swear, I could not have done it.
This is next-level bad.
No wonder she had to leave the country.

This movie destroyed the careers of Anjelica Huston, Andie Macdowell, and Rosie O'Donnell.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | July 5, 2025 1:29 PM |
I must admit, I watch this movie every so often (or at least the Rosie scenes, not the whole movie) and can't stop laughing uncontrollably. It's like a SNL skit. They should have passed it off as a comedy.
This really backfired on Rosie's attempt to make this her 'dramatic actress' project.

Regardless, Rosie was playing a real person.. She met her, hung out with and her interpretation is how the real Beth is. Growing up she was called severely retarded, Now she's diagnosed as Autistic,

"This movie has aged well."

r13 I was thinking this movie was in the 80s or something. Wow.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | July 5, 2025 4:17 PM |
Am I missing something? It's extreme, but there are people that disabled in real life and if that's what she's supposed to be portraying it's actually pretty accurate.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | July 5, 2025 4:20 PM |
Opie and Anthony’s (I know, I know) Jim said when this came out, “she’s not acting. This is the same voice she used to goof on the slow kids back in Commack!”
It was funny when Huston was going around promoting her two volumes of autobiography (terrible, btw) she made sure nobody mentioned this. According to her the only movie she ever directed was Bastard out of Carolina.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | July 5, 2025 4:45 PM |
R15 Yeah, I guess you're missing her bad acting.

I guess someone said to Rosie:
"This dramatic turn will be great for your career. It will be your Emmy you've been craving - the one that will show the world you're a serious actress aside from being a comic. It will do for you what 'Friendly Fire' did for Burnett. What 'Stone Pillow' did for Lucy. This is your moment to shine, Rosie."
And Rosie believed it.

Have to say, this performance may be questionable. but Rosie is brilliant in the series MILF, playing the lead character's (probably bipolar) mother. Not kidding, a masterful performance.

I can just imagine Anjelica Huston watching her first screening of this movie.
Rosie hamming it up on film, and Anjelica recoiling in horror, as she announces to the room, "Oh, no no no. This will simply NOT DO!!! I'm ruined!!"

From the film’s Wikipedia page:
“The film, like the book, is about the time Simon spent with her sister Beth, who has a developmental disability,”

A review on IMDB:
I lived in the room above the laundromat used in the movie. The day before they started filming I broke my leg at work. I was a roofer in those days, and managed to shoot myself in the tibia with my nail gun (honest, it shouldn't have fired without my finger on the trigger but it did).
I had no idea they were filming a movie. And first thing in the morning I hobbled down the stairs and the first person I saw was Rosie O'Donnell, having a conversation with my landlord and when she saw me she asked what happened, I told her I was a rooter and broke my leg. Apparently everyone in my building had been informed about the movie except myself, my landlord figured I'd be working those hours and didn't tell me about it. I was then informed that I either had to stay home all day, or stay behind the yellow tape. I told them that wasn't possible as I had a doctor appointment and had nowhere else to go in the meanwhile and I will come and go as I please, and needed access to my bathroom.
Geeze, they solved the problem by giving me a stool right behind Anjelica Huston for the whole 3 days of the shoot!! I was able to talk to her all the time, but didn't... I listened and watched. When she didn't appear busy I talked to her and mentioned her Grandfather and asked how it felt to be in Canada again.
She was just so down to earth, and didn't treat me like an irritating pest.
I don't recommend breaking your leg as a way to meet Hollywood stars, but you can't get Andie MacDowell to sign your cast unless you do.

BUT—No Other Love, with Richard Thomas and Julie Kavner, beat it by a week-and-a-half, premiering on CBS on March 24, 1979.
I guess 1979 was a very special year...
