The Fourth is second only to Thanksgiving in setting the stage for family arguments. For many years, my family has leaned heavily on the humor of the musical comedy "1776" as a way to navigate political differences. It's increasingly difficult to remain friendly with political adversaries, especially the friends and family we've tried to hold on to in America's march toward fascism/autocracy. What shows or films exist to divert our cultural attention with comedy?
This movie just started on TCM - I'm recording it.

I've only ever seen the trailer for this and it makes it look like an SNL spoof. Not to mention that it's only lightly hinted at the very end of the trailer that it's a musical.
So no, I won't be watching it.

It's a very good movie, and a great adaptation of the show, R5. I try to watch it every year around July 4. This year, I had no intention of watching it, feeling as I do about what this country has become. However, it started while we were cleaning up after dinner, and I got sucked into it again.

"Birth of a Nation" is pretty damn funny, inadvertently.
Buster Keaton's THE GENERAL might qualify here.
