Eldergays, tell me about Wolfman Jack.

I just heard a song about him. I get that he was a DJ with a gravely voice, but what else? Why was such a person a sensation back in the day?

He was the great host of The Midnight Special, which I subscribe to on Youtube. I have very fond memories of staying up to watch with my Dad.

Clap for the Wolfman OP?

by Anonymousreply 2July 5, 2025 12:20 AM

My parents wouldn't let me listen to him because he's a Negro.

by Anonymousreply 3July 5, 2025 12:23 AM

Are you Julie Eisenhower, r3?

by Anonymousreply 4July 5, 2025 12:31 AM

He had a cameo in American Graffiti.

I was very young - but I remember him being a big celebrity in the mid to late 70s. And then he just disappeared.

He wasn't black though.

by Anonymousreply 6July 5, 2025 1:31 AM

I read somewhere he was a devout Episcopalian

by Anonymousreply 7July 5, 2025 1:33 AM

Did You Boogie (With Your Baby) - Another record he was featured on in 1976.

I saw him once, walking a tiny dog & wearing a caftan, near his home.

He glared at me I drove by, gave a sinister vibe.

He was also very fat, as in morbidly obese.

by Anonymousreply 9July 5, 2025 1:35 AM

I remember thinking when he was the host of The Midnight Special that he had no clue as to who the artists he was introducing actually were.

by Anonymousreply 10July 5, 2025 1:45 AM

r3 No, he wasn't.

by Anonymousreply 11July 5, 2025 1:49 AM

[quote]Are you Julie Eisenhower, [R3]?

I think it's Amber Von Tussle

by Anonymousreply 12July 5, 2025 1:50 AM

From a friend who worked for him: A coked-up nutcase.

by Anonymousreply 13July 5, 2025 1:52 AM

He was okay back in the day. Hardly a “sensation,” OP.

by Anonymousreply 14July 5, 2025 1:57 AM

Big sensation back in the day

by Anonymousreply 15July 5, 2025 2:01 AM

He was a big star in the mid to late 70s for sure.

by Anonymousreply 16July 5, 2025 2:43 AM

Yes, R2, that's it.

by Anonymousreply 17July 5, 2025 2:48 AM

Maybe I'm wrong but he seemed to have a revival after his appearance in American Graffiti.

by Anonymousreply 18July 5, 2025 2:50 AM

OP watch American graffiti. He was part of the heartbeat of American youth in the 1960s. Of course that’s a factionalized version.

R18, he came to New York and worked here the year AG came out. Those two facts gave him a bump for a while.

by Anonymousreply 19July 5, 2025 2:52 AM

^^^fictionalized

by Anonymousreply 20July 5, 2025 2:53 AM

Are you sure that wasn't just Joel's neighbor, R9?

by Anonymousreply 21July 5, 2025 2:53 AM

thanks for clarification r19

by Anonymousreply 22July 5, 2025 3:07 AM

Was he on TV all the time or was he mostly known for radio?

by Anonymousreply 23July 5, 2025 2:40 PM

Was he the guy that hosted “creature feature” with the flying brains and spinal cords that were attacking people

by Anonymousreply 24July 5, 2025 3:56 PM

My now dead mother told a story of how everyone thought he was black because of his deep, gravely voice. And then she proceeded to make racist jokes about our neighbors. Oh, she was a peach.

by Anonymousreply 25July 5, 2025 4:00 PM

Here's the song I heard. (R2 was right!)

Kind of a stupid and unserious song and I can't imagine any group of people looking more like 70s stereotypes than these guys lol.
