[quote] Two Camp Mystic directors, Britt and Catie Eastland, pleaded for help and said that some children are not accounted for and that some cabins appear to have been flooded and possibly washed away. They also said the roads have been washed out and that they need urgent air assistance. Camp Mystic is a Christian summer camp for girls in Hunt.
Oh...a Jesus Camp. Quelle surprise.
[quote] Asked whether the county had a warning system that might have sounded an alert as the Guadalupe rose, he said: “We do not have a warning system.”

When it rains, we have water. We had no reason to believe this was going to be anything like what happened here, none whatsoever.”
Most dangerous valley in the whole country, but they put summer camps there and have no monitoring in place?

A high school friend of mine posted this earlier today:
💧💧💧💧💧💧
Well Folks, Happy 4th of July from Hunt, Texas, the magical source of the Guadalupe River 😎😎
Many of you know we have been under a pretty severe drought the last few years and we’ve been waiting patiently for a decent rain event to potentially clean up our river with a flood. It appears that day has finally arrived. It’s been raining here for over 2 hours and the forecast shows the potential for up to an additional 5-8 hrs of rain. These are not ordinary rains, and appear to be 1 inch plus per hour. This tropical system which moved in overnight from deep S Texas and Mexco is training on top of the heart of the hill country in a dangerous pattern.
The potential for flash flooding is extremely high and especially dangerous since this tropical rain has come during the middle of the night while many people are asleep and possibly unaware of the potential danger.
Please be careful and stay off the rd if possible. Do not try to cross a low water crossing in this area. It’s a very serious situation and we appear to have a chance at much more rain in a short period of time.
I will report back when I know more later this morning.

That river rising like that is terrifying. I imagine the dam behind that bridge is going to be severely compromised as well. Some years back, there was a regular column in our newspaper dedicated to real estate news, and one week, the columnist had written a letter condemning the mandatory set back from waterways handed down by our state legislators as being grossly unfair to landowners and preventing a lot of valuable real estate from being developed. Bad luck for his timing, because the day his column ran, the front page of the paper was dominated by the picture of a full-sized house FLOATING down what is normally a small creek in my town. We are in a semi-arid area and we cannot possibly get the rains that Texas can get, but for us all it takes is a deep snowpack, a sudden thaw accompanied by a generous normal rain, and small creeks even here can become raging torrents. Looking at those pictures, it's obvious that NOTHING should be built within 200 yards on either side of that creek, no matter how low it usually flows.

Maybe check the fucking weather forecast a week out before you have your campouts and vacations and cancel it if there's any sign of rain. Maybe build the fucking houses by the river banks higher on stilts like they do near beaches.

The county doesn't have an alert system, but recent cuts to NOAA & NWS also contributed to the lack of preparedness, R50.
[quote]NewsNation national security contributor Tracy Walder, whose daughter is friends with some of the missing campers, said the relay of information has been a challenge because campers did not have access to technology during their stay at camp.
[quote]“Technology is actually not allowed there,” Walder said. “That’s why communication and information is kind of a bit difficult to come by at this point in time.”

by Anonymous | reply 116 | July 5, 2025 5:07 PM |
Given that this is a Christian girl's camp in Texas, I'm going to guess that 100% of the parents voted for Trump and thus voted for DOGE and the drastic, life-threatening cuts to government that they promised throughout the campaign and even committed to — in writing via Project 2025 — prior to the election with ample notice and literally decades of evidence of the potential outcomes when meteorologists don't have access to the tools that allow them to accurately and reliably predict the weather. And so, when a predictable and easily preventable tragedy like this comes to its inevitable conclusion, we are correct in assuming that this is the outcome that these parents voted for.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
And now, the only question is whether a single one of the parents will speak the truth and say out loud that their vote for Trump cost them their child's life.

What's strange to me is that the Camp hasn't issued any statements. The Camp Director and owner died, and the only notice is some click-bait news notice on facebook. My sister's friend confirmed because her daughter is a camp rep (the person who insures all the best girls in her town pick Mystic.) Supposedly he died trying to rescue the 7-8 year olds who were in the cabin that was washed away. But only heard through my sister. Sister also said that the parents are only getting word from TV and local authorities, hit or miss. Nothing from Mystic. You'd think they'd have a PR firm handling things at this point. But in the end, as exclusive as Mystic is, it's a fucking weird secretive club where Christianity is now forced on the campers as part of their purity rituals.

Trust me, I get it. And I am happily ensconced in my reliably blue neighborhood in reliably blue Austin, so it’s extremely painful to vote for people who care about other humans and our planet, only to have these obvious outcomes when the bad people win. FAFO, indeed.
And will conservatives learn? Of course not.

[quote]Officials don’t care they’re Trumper’s
That's an outright lie. The officials [italic]only[/italic] care because the dead are Trumpers' children. Let me put it this way: if this were a migrant camp of children, would this even be news? Would Abbot and his dastardly crew be throwing blame? Would Shady JD be tweeting about broken hearts?
No, no and no. [italic]They[/italic] would be celebrating. After all, migrants are criminals — or at least the children of criminals — right?
I was going to add "would we be discussing this on DL", but that goes to R116's projection of "celebration" over the death of these children. We would be discussing it because we're not MAGA and do, in fact, care about these children... just in the context of caring about all children and wanting all children to be safe, secure and not drowned by a predictable and preventable tragedy caused by the hate, cruelty and let-them-eat-cake attitude that MAGA shouts from rooftops daily — and votes into power.
No, R116, we're not the same, and what we're expressing here is no celebration nor game of semantics.

Particularly mind boggling is that these camps are allowed to operate in this area at all, considering that a similar flash flood incident happened in July 1987 when ten teenagers drowned at a Christian camp at the "Pot O' Gold" Ranch . [quote]For those of us not in areas where flash floods ever happen, a question for those who do: just how much advance warning is usually provided and how long until a situation goes from normal/dry to catastrophic?
Sometimes you're warned days in advance that if the forecast holds up, there's a possibility of flash flooding on a particular day. Things can also change so quickly that you might only have a few hours notice at best. And sometimes there are unpredictable variables involved like blocked culverts or sewer system malfunctions, that cause flooding in areas that are usually spared.
Flash flood warnings are usually intended to keep people off the roads; evacuations are rarer. Once the event is underway and you're getting the insane amount of rainfall per hour that happened in Texas, evacuation orders can claim more lives than they save. This was a terribly tragic situation and intense rain events like this are becoming more common, which makes it all the more important to beef up our weather services and warning and response systems, rather than eviscerate them.

Even with the best warning systems, there will sometimes still be fatalities from natural disasters. But we should want to lower the numbers as much as we can by having those systems and keeping the as modern as is reasonable.. Learn from the past to better the future. It's pretty simple and it's frustrating that many don't get that. The ones that do get it but don't care are another matter.
It's very sad that these girls lost their lives. And the adults too. There is no joy to be found in this. RIP.

Why does everyone assume that the parents are Trump-loving MAGA voters? Almost 5M Texans voted for Harris in 2024. Not everyone in Texas is a MAGAt. And I've seen no indication that this camp was some sort of fundy Christian camp. Not all Christians are MAGAts. What I've seen leads me to think it's foremost a camp for the children of the wealthy and elite. Not all rich people are MAGAts.
There are a lot of assumptions being made in this thread simply to justify hatred for Texans and Christians (but oddly not much hatred being directed towards the wealthy.)

R140: I saw a lengthy report about that gal's rescue on one of the San Antonio news stations last night (on YouTube). Really heartbreaking story. She was with her parents at a campground for the holiday weekend. They were awakened around 4:00 am by the flooding.
Initially, the three of them clung onto a tree together, but the force of the water was so great, her father was swept away after a few minutes. Shortly thereafter, she & her mother also lost their grip on each other, and the tree. She told rescuers that for a minute or two as they traveled downstream (she wasn't really sure how long), her mother was close enough that she could hear her -- they were yelling back & forth at each other -- but then she didn't hear her anymore. She had no idea how long it was until she grabbed onto that tree where she was found. She recalled going over a few dams, and at one point, passing under bridge where she could see some LEO/Rescue crews on it (flashing lights) as she approached. She screamed & waved, but it was so dark & so loud they didn't see or hear her.
She was spotted in the tree about 8:00 am, by a man who'd returned to inspect his house, after moving his family to higher ground (just in case) a couple hours earlier. When he walked around to his back deck to see how high the water level still was, he heard her screams for help & finally picked her out amongst the trees, way out in the middle. She was waving at him. It took close to another hour for swift-water rescue to actually get her out of there.
Incredibly, she sustained no injuries that required immediate treatment (or that she be taken somewhere). She had scrapes & bruises all over, and obviously she was physically exhausted (and traumatized), but no broken bones, or deep lacerations requiring a tetanus shot & stitches, etc. First responders had other rescues to get to, so after the EMTs checked her out, the guy's family brought her into their home instead of responders taking her to an impersonal evacuation shelter. Got her a hot shower, clothes, food, she took a nap, they helped her get in touch with her family members etc. That's the good stuff I like to hear about during natural disasters.

Texas senator John Cornyn posts: "Yikes. Be safe out there!"
Volodymyr Zelensky posted a far more empathetic and thoughtfully worded statement about the floods. And it's not like he doesn't have enough problems to worry about at home.
Why can't we have a leader like him?

It's a camp for future debutantes, apparently (confirmed by someone who lives around there), so yeah, someone's kids, but likely mean girls. They've had big floods before--the land does not easily absorb rain. Lots of orchard crops around there, so apparently they irrigate rather than conserve. Lots of different perspectives on all this. I grew-up near an area that flooded almost every year--it was where a river met one of the great lakes. We always wondered why bad flood didn't get them to pack up, but at least it was so predictable that no one ever died.

I live in Austin - I refer to it in pretty much every comment I make here. My family has been in TX since the 1860s and one of my relatives was/is a very big name in Austin. I grew up in Sugar Land. I know Texas, trust me. And I’ve lived in Los Angeles, DC, Baltimore, and Dublin and travel a lot, so I know the big, wide world outside of TX, too.
I’m having trouble scrolling up so I don’t remember the point of your comment. Was it to paint the state with a large brush? Fair enough.
And to everyone’s points about Southern Christians, also fair enough: two things: my VERY, GOP for years Christian brother voted for Kamala in 2024 and Hillary in 2016. My once old-school GOP dad voted for Kamala. Secondly - and I’ve mentioned this before - I encourage everyone to find the Texas Monthly article titled “The Good Book and the Bad” (I believe that’s correct). My son’s episcopal school took a stand years ago regarding Brokeback Mountain and won. It’s a wonderful read and I knew Lucy Nazro very well. She was a Southern Christian who was as liberal as anyone I’ve ever known. Please take fifteen minutes - it’s a wonderful article.
I’m not a Christian but it pains me to see good, thoughtful, reasonable people like this lumped in with the truly evil. The ones in the cult. And it IS a cult.
Lastly, for those who won’t allow any pity for these second and third grade girls who were swept away in the middle of the night, I just don’t know what to say to you. I’m sorry your heart doesn’t have room for them.

To those who are shaming us for not feeling sympathy, you have misdirected your energy. Of course we feel empathy for these children and can't imagine the horror they've suffered; drowning is an awful way to die. My heart breaks for these children and the unfortunate circumstances that put them in harm's way.
What my heart doesn't break for is the parents. They are getting [italic]exactly[/italic] what they voted for: government out of their lives, and that includes the 99% of the beneficial things government does for all of us, like monitor the weather for freak, once-in-a-century storms that wreak havoc, cost lives and livelihoods, and end up costing us all $billion in damages. If I had the opportunity, I would sit across the table from each and every one of these parents and would lay out the facts for them: Project 2025 was very clear on its plans for the NOAA and NWS. We all knew that Project 2025 was going to be enacted by Trump, and we knew just as well that it would not be enacted by Kamala.
If you voted for Trump, the result is that the agencies tasked (you know, government doing something in response to prior catastrophes) were hobbled by Trump, Musk and DOGE. The outcome — this specific outcome — was entirely, 100% completely predictable: agency gutted, the beast was starved, and when the critical moment that an agency was designed to prevent but couldn't came to pass, we are well within reason and compassion to say "We told you so.. This is what you voted for. Elections have consequences, and maybe next time, you'll think of your drowning daughter and the horror she suffered because you voted for the guy who promised to take away basic safety precautions."
Yeah, that would hurt. And if I were sitting across the table from them, I would expect them to lash out at me, perhaps even physically assault me, and I would turn that against them as well because, as I would say, "your anger with me for stating the truth reflects completely upon you. You were the one who knowingly chose to vote to take away basic weather protection, and you were arrogant enough to think that it wouldn't affect [italic]you.[/italic] "
Those are tough words to hear. I know because I've been on the other side of that table several times in my life, and what I can tell you is that I got far more out of being told the cold, hard truth about the consequences of my decisions than I ever did when that truth was softened to make it easier to hear, or I was protected out of some misplaced sense of civility (or as Michelle Obama put it, "going high"). We have gone far past the stage where reason, facts and reality have an impact on MAGA. They (and sadly, we along with them) have to suffer the consequences of their decisions for them to learn to look beyond themselves and consider consequences for their families, their friends, and the rest of us.
And if there is a good that can come from the deaths of these 21 girls, it is that there will be 21 sets of parents in Texas who might consider the implications of their choices.

To provide timely warning to people in risky locations for extreme weather situations such as dangerous flooding, or hurricanes, or blizzards, and extreme heat and extreme cold . Proper warning saves lives.

R269: I'm not sure where those summer camps were in relation to this place...but this is an interview with the owner of an RV park that was washed away near Kerrville. It's long (13 minutes), but worth the watch IMO. At the beginning she talks about how rapidly things developed. It began raining heavily around 1:00 am. She checked the river level around 2:30 am. It seemed okay (or nothing alarming), but still, she called the Sheriff's dept to ask if they had any information. They didn't, so she & her husband went to sleep. An hour later, the park was under waist-deep water, and an RV with a family of five was being swept away.

And she, more than anyone, understands that politically rooted tragedies do not change one single thing.
Surely we already know this, but just in case we forgot, dozens upon dozens of dead children do not impact or affect political change in any meaningful way here in the United States.
Americans are a profoundly stubborn people, & in the final analysis, most are OK with loss of life, including the loss of their own children, in order to not give an inch & admit we have a horrific problem with gun control (or lack thereof), & blatant denialism regarding climate change and the magnitude of events that become tragedies, as a result of denying it.
These problems? These climate change events? They will continue happening, the severity and regulatory of them will increase globally, & we will get used to it, just how we got used to school shootings.
Republicans do NOT prioritize safety & welfare of the general public. They prioritize money, & POWER. That’s all, and that’s it, and Americans are being held hostage by a system views dead kids as a small price to pay in order to reach their objectives.

R323, I know all too very well what you experienced. I too, lost beloved friends to AIDS.
If these people weren’t born and indoctrinated into religion & religious/political cults, they would be just like us, R323. That’s the true kicker that deeply stings about this division in this country- without religion, we’d all be the same.
In no way do I agree with the politics of most of Texas, however, I recall all of the horrible shit alleged right wingers wrote all over social media regarding the most recent fires in Los Angeles, & their posts were empty & senseless.
People, specifically innocent people/kids, don’t deserve destruction just because they were born into power hungry families, just like no one deserved AIDS.
It’s very easy to lose our humanity when we’ve seen nothing really change for the better, or when it does change, a particular administration decides to reverse and destroy all of the progress we have made.
I guess I have to ask myself, what good does it do to hate these people, wish them harm, & then revel in their pain & misery?
I’m guessing it advances not changes anything, either.
That said, I’ve been up close and personal in the lives of persons who have lost their children, & all I can say is that there is absolutely no other grief like the loss of a child.
Again - these people grieve as we grieve, they are just like us, but they use religion in order to cope, & it works for them, whether I agree with them or not.

Delving into the article, it did say she was married and had one son - I'm guessing her age to be in her early-mid 70s from the fact that her parents bought a boys camp near the one she ended up buying in the 1960s, "when she was a child".

For those who enjoy science & knowledge...I highly recommend this video about the flood by a retired Air Force meteorologist. The portions about the Kerr County Radar Closeup (showing Camp Mystic's location in the catchment area) and the Flood Wave were especially eye-popping. (the video is time-stamped)

Another Texas tragedy, another Ted Cruz absence:
Cruz landed in Athens, Greece on Thursday, the day after the Texas Division of Emergency Management announced that it was activating state emergency response resources.
That night, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick held a press conference to warn of the "potential flooding" that would hit overnight.
Crus was spotted visiting the Parthenon with his wife, Heidi, on Saturday – the day after Camp Mystic announced that more than 20 girls had gone missing in the floodwaters.
Cruz flew back to Texas on Sunday.

I keep thinking about that other camp in the article at R357 — the sister camp that had staff who stayed up that night and watched the weather warnings and checked on the river, saw it begin to rise and jumped into action and evacuated all the kids in time. I would not have been able to sleep if we were camp staff responsible for all these children’s lives and torrential rain was falling and we were housed right there on the bank of a river. I’d be monitoring the situation relentlessly. There’s a latin phrase in legal terminology, [italic] in loco parentis [/italic] — you are in place of the parents, responsible for the safety of the children in your care.
Why were the Camp Mystic staff able to just go to sleep during such a powerful overnight downpour and not be alarmed enough to just stay up and keep watch? The downside of being so religious and giving it all up to God?

If a billionaires great-granddaughter died under his watch, I suppose I would be nervous as well.
A side of me would like to believe that this tragedy could seriously, deeply, truly affect those rich people and they would see about changing course in this state. Even if they don’t blame the orange shit stain, maybe they can see how changes and maintenance could have been done at the state and local level. Maybe the elites would now seriously consider a regime change in the state.

Biden put out billions in federal funding for the Infrastructure Act, and the Lt. Governor of Texas, as well as the Governor, chose to NOT use the federal funds for effective warning systems for events of this catastrophic magnitude, because they didn’t want to use money from a Democratic administration for public safety, & instead, siphoned some of that funding for Sheriffs and/or cops.
They were specifically allowed to use that money for a comprehensive & viable warning system, and deliberately chose not to. They also could have used the funding for clean energy initiatives & infrastructure, but chose not to. They could have used the money to create new jobs in the green building sector, but chose not to, just like they deliberately ignored their power grid for decades.
These politicians in red states play fast and loose with the lives of others, & why wouldn’t they? Their constituents DGAF about each other, either.
We’re in America. We should all have the best of everything, yet can’t, because people cannot stop with their greed.
I guarantee you, that most of those parents who lost children in those camps will get into a headspace very, very soon, that convinced them that the tragic and preventable death of their children was all in God’s plan, & God’s will. Actually, NO, it was not. Let’s pretend God exists: Was it his will that your elected officials use money from Obama and/or Biden, so that lives could be saved/spared, or was it God’s will that those monies were refused, unused or redirected, so that your little ones could die?
Same with Covid. Was it God’s will that your close friends and family members died from Covid because you refused to understand that it was a REALLY serious public health safety issue, because you and your friends and family members lived in a FOX News bubble, and then people needlessly died, or was it God’s will that you all sheltered in place, wore masks anywhere and everywhere, and social distanced, in order to do your best to contain or prevent contagion?
Christians need to understand that their God gave them a brain, & using it logically, is more important than pride & hubris.

R392, yes, I’m quite familiar with your paraphrasing of that verse, as I was born & raised in a very conservative, Christian family. I’m now a very happily proud atheist, as the Bible has some good advice, however, most of it is mythological, & not even well written mythology, imho. I wish Christians could just take a moment to compare their biblical narratives & compare them to a fable or fairy tale, but they won’t, & that’s fine, because even though they are single handedly holding back real scientific & social progress in this country, and should question their reality, they won’t. We’re absolutely held hostage by their bullshit, however, we have to understand and accept that this isn’t changing anytime soon. Perhaps within 2-4 generations, but not yet. Religion is conveniently used as a way to prevent progress, or to hold it back. It works, but it won’t work forever, & eventually, science & technology WILL win out, because it’s simply impossible to hold that back. What we’re witnessing now is the epoch of the power and money hungry, holding on to the final and scarce vestiges of the old world. I won’t be alive to see that dawning of that new era, but I know 100%, without question, that it’s on its way, and I hope that it’s all managed well, but I doubt it, because human beings are childish AF, & don’t like sharing with others.

You are such a GOOD person & leader, & leaders, whether men or women, MUST follow their heart , when considering what may be the final arbitrator of what is right or what is wrong, at any given point.
I want you to understand something MOST Americans aren’t willing to admit… who do we want to be honest?
Does honesty even count???
Who do we ALL actually want to become?
We oppose anything & everything, but what does IT ALL AMOUNT TO???
Ideally? Sweden and/or a combination thereof, of some Nordic countries, appea as ideal.
These countries adopt socialism.
If that is the case:
Why are the Nordic countries living WAAAAY BETTER lives than us????
Why???
Haven’t you ever stopped yourself in your own tracks, rendering a silence, and asked yourself why progressive or Centrist/Wealthy/Progressive Americans with MONEY prefer Europe, over the United States?
Americans need to come to grips with the following, regarding our national security:
It’s OK for ALLL of us to pay higher taxes, for our collective, greater good.
It’s OK to assure that American borne citizens & naturalized citizens, are allowed to stay here, & contribute to our society/economy.
It’s OK that a Mexican couple who have been in this country under a TPS order, with children born in the United States, or a bunch of South Korean sisters, are able & willing to make more money than those of us without a food truck or a nail salon, or a knee on our neck.
Personally? I observe that the immigrant backlash is actually based on how frightening it is for MANY Americans, to see for themselves/experience just how damn hard foreign immigrants work tirelessly, in order to become Americans. I think it scares the living shit out of them, that persons with NOTHING to lose, get here, & put it ALL on the line.
When Americans acknowledge how genuinely valuable these immigrants are to our economy?
Welp?
That may be the day we stop crucifying these poor folk as less than.
We or our ancestors came here for some reason or another.
WE. ALL WANT THE SAME FUCKING THINGS!
Now explain to me, or any old timer, how the ever loving fuck we fell for a con that denies us humanity, our empathy, & our kindness?
If you DGAF about anything at all? This question ain’t for you.
This question is for all who are like me!!!!
How the fuck did we allow ourselves to get here, & how the fuck do we get out in order to protect those who come after us???

[quote]sitting here on this thread and giving Republican parents shit because they voted differently than many of us, is the height of vulgarity and is classless AF.
The day after this flood, when these Republican parents were in the worst crisis moments of their lives, Trump had Marines invade MacArthur Park in Los Angeles and conduct an immigrant sweep as though they were invading a foreign land. Think of the good these supposedly best-in-the-world soldiers could have done rescuing drowning children rather than cosplaying in a public park (for no other reason than to terrorize Hispanics in California and try to destroy who is shaping up to be the greatest threat to Republicans in retaking the WH in 2028). This is the choice that Republican parents made.
I'll say that again, R361: [italic]This is the choice that Republican parents made. [/italic] Not thinking 15 seconds into the future and pondering that they may need assistance; not thinking about the terrorized children that have been separated from their parents (including the hundreds from Trump 1.0 that have not been reunited with their families), not thinking about the anguish of [italic]those[/italic] parents... nope. It was all about othering anyone who is not straight, white and Christian.
Sitting in the cool comfort of the voting booth, this is the choice that [italic]these[/italic] Republican parents made. And they made it at the point that voting for the better, more compassionate and capable person would have made the difference between there being a functioning alert system or it being destroyed (by Musk in an attempt to move even more business from government-owned satellites to his privately-owned versions); when it would have made the difference between using the National Guard and our Armed Forces for good, or wasting them in a political show; and ultimately, when it made the difference between choosing which children get to live. They could have chosen the candidate that wanted [bold]all[/bold] children to live, but they didn't. They chose the candidate that wants to kill children. They just made it thinking it wasn't [bold]their[/bold] children at risk.
So, yeah, call me classless or vulgar or any other epithet you want, you aren't going to change my mind. They chose the candidate that killed children (and over a million citizens from young to old) the first time he was in office, and even knowing this, they still chose him again. I feel badly for those poor little girls. But when people use children as pawns, don't you dare tell me to forgive them or show them sympathy or anything other than telling them that actions — and elections — have consequences.

The more details come out, the more damning it is for Camp Mystic in particular.
Cabins were built on a designated floodplain assessed as High Risk. Junction point for a river and a creek. Devastating floods have happened on that river in the past. Children are sleeping in bunk beds in those cabins, mere feet from the river's edge. There' s been a drought for 4 months, the land is hard baked and not ready to absorb any rain. "Flash Flood Watch" issued by local meteorologists that afternoon, 12 hours prior to the disaster. Then the extremely heavy rainfall begins as everybody goes to sleep for the night.. and none of the camp owners or staff are interested or willing to stay up and keep watch???

Not to split hairs, R410....but there are actually TWO creeks that meet & enter the S. Guadalupe River at Camp Mystic. (it's also right at the "top" of an S-shaped section of the river where there's a hard bend to the north)
Cypress Creek is very obvious/visible on Google Earth because sections of it are dammed upstream, creating ponds & small lakes (as well as being labelled). The much smaller Edmundson Creek, isn't really visible on Google Earth (I'm guessing it's dry most of the time?) -- but it's there, under the trees, entering Camp Mystic from the east. There is a label for it on Google Earth, if one zooms-in on the bridge over Cypress Creek entering the camp. It shows up on FEMA flood hazard maps, that's for sure.

Geez. I've seen subsequent interviews with Lorena Guillen, owner of the destroyed Blue Oak RV Park, who gave a very compelling account of the flood at R279.
At some point late in that interview, Lorena mentioned that she also owned a restaurant on-site which was still standing on higher ground (at entrance to RV park), but obviously was going to be closed for a while -- and she worried long-term, not just for her & her husband (in terms of paying their bills), but for her restaurant employees who live paycheck-to-paycheck & depend on daily tips.
As it turns out: Julian Ryan, the young father at R142 -- who bled to death after breaking a window to escape his mobile home -- was one of her employees. He'd closed & cleaned-up with her on the night of July 3rd, leaving around 1:00 am. She didn't know of his fate when she gave R279 interview, and just seemed crushed in later interviews.

HA! I hadn't even thought about it, but there actually WAS a first-season FOL episode about a flood. Headmaster John Lawlor got Blair & Tootie out of the barn on Blair's horse -- and Blair became infatuated with him. (bonus points if you know that horses' name!)

I don't know why everyone is so upset about these floods killing childen. If these angry people were half as concerned when gunmen shoots kids in school, it would be a much better world. However, we can cry and complain about the weather, but we cannot do anything about gun control which kills more people than all the weather emergencies combined?
What's wrong with this picture?

[quote] The Republican governor, who took a helicopter tour of the disaster zone, dismissed a question about who was to blame for the deaths, saying, “That’s the word choice of losers.”
[quote]“Every football team makes mistakes,” he said. “The losing teams are the ones that try to point out who’s to blame. The championship teams are the ones who say, ‘Don’t worry about it, man, we got this. We’re going to make sure that we go score again and we’re going to win this game.’ The way winners talk is not to point fingers.”

Can't believe Abbott said that. Well, I can, but Jesus, that's got to be one of the worst disaster-related lines since, "You're doing a heck of a job, Brownie" by Dubya during Katrina.
There is no game left here to fight. 300 people are probably dead. You absolutely should be figuring out what went wrong and how the probability of this happening again can be significantly decreased. No "rah, rah, go team!" to be found with this. I can't get the analogy to work, but even if one forces it, the game has already been lost.
by Anonymous | reply 449 | July 9, 2025 1:06 PM |
If a Governor in my home state (Massachusetts) were to spout that football-analogy crap after a shocking catastrophe with 200+ lives lost and such clear evidence of compounded human error... he'd be stomped in the next election. Texas gets the leadership they want, I guess. Pathetic.
There was a Texan insult lobbed at Dubya Bush a quarter century ago... 'all hat, no cattle." Same could be said of empty-suit leadership like Abbott's. Yet they keep re-electing him.

Kerr County did eventually take the $10 million in federal funding to improve infrastructure (so it wouldn't go to a blue state). Most of it went toward upgrading the Kerr County Sherriff's Dept communication system, not a dime toward flood warning system.

R458 The footage of the recent flooding in New Mexico may have been smaller area-wise, but the ferocity of the river and the amount of debris it was pushing were truly terrifying. I doubt anyone could have survived being carried along for 20 miles in that deluge.
I heard a geophysicist attribute the current confluence of floods, weather anomalies, increased earthquake and volcanic activity, to the solar maximum that is now occurring - peak sunspot and coronal mass ejections - and that is likely to continue and intensify through July & August. Accompanied by electronic and communication disturbances, as well as even outbreaks of social unrest. Summer o' Fun!

As R479 pointed out, the town of Comfort (in Kendall County) had a pair of warning sirens linked to river gauges (and a manual button), thanks in part to Assistant Fire Chief Danny Morales.
[quote]Morales said they cobbled together money from a grant, from the county commission, the department’s own budget and from the local electric utility, which also donated a siren pole. They also got help installing the flood sensor gauge in the creek. The price tag with all the donated materials and the costs the department fronted was somewhere around $50,000 to $60,000 or “maybe a little more,” Morales said.
The article notes that Kerr County would require a much larger system, costing an estimated $1 Million (did they get that bid from Motorola?), but still....the point is that Comfort made it a priority & figured how to get it done.
