Zohran Mamdani identified as Asian & Black or AfricanAmerican on college application

As he runs for mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani has made his identity as a Muslim immigrant of South Asian descent a key part of his appeal.

But as a high school senior in 2009, Mr. Mamdani, the Democratic nominee, claimed another label when he applied to Columbia University. Asked to identify his race, he checked a box that he was "Asian" but also "Black or African American," according to internal data derived from a hack of Columbia University that was shared with The New York Times.

Columbia, like many elite universities, used a race-conscious affirmative action admissions program at the time. Reporting that his race was Black or African American in addition to Asian could have given an advantage to Mr. Mamdani, who was born in Uganda and spent his earliest years there.

In an interview on Thursday, Mr. Mamdani, 33, said he did not consider himself either Black or African American, but rather "an American who was born in Africa." He said his answers on the college application were an attempt to represent his complex background given the limited choices before him, not to gain an upper hand in the admissions process. (He was not accepted at Columbia.)

"Most college applications don't have a box for Indian-Ugandans, so I checked multiple boxes trying to capture the fullness of my background," said Mr. Mamdani, a state lawmaker from Queens.

The application allowed students to provide "more specific information where relevant," and Mr. Mamdani said that he wrote in, "Ugandan." "Even though these boxes are constraining, I wanted my college application to reflect who I was," he added.

And, OP--and The NY Times?

by Anonymousreply 1July 4, 2025 5:50 AM

So amusing that as Mamdani gets closer to being mayor, all these bullshit, meaningless "gotcha" articles are being propagated by the Times, which clearly has it out for him.

So, OP--Adams the criminal and Dump toady is a better choice for mayor?

by Anonymousreply 2July 4, 2025 5:53 AM

Why would he need to pretend to be Black?

by Anonymousreply 3July 4, 2025 6:30 AM

Go back to the drawing board, NYT. Very weak hit piece article.

by Anonymousreply 4July 4, 2025 6:35 AM

R3: Especially when daddy was already a chaired professor.

by Anonymousreply 5July 4, 2025 7:18 AM

He does have Ugandan citizenship still which would seem to provide an excellent excuse.

by Anonymousreply 6July 4, 2025 7:29 AM

R3 Because “people of color” take advantage of any opportunity to reap the so-called benefits of being black and then turn around and call black Americans leeches and complain about affirmative action and etc.

If you were born in Uganda, that would make you African-American.

by Anonymousreply 10July 4, 2025 12:38 PM

I'm so glad the truth about this guy is coming out in flying colors. He is a lying, racist, Jew hating, silver spoon in his mouth communist. Hopefully, with all the shit coming out of his own mouth, people will finally see him for what he is. I am not hopeful, people are incredibly stupid.

Supposedly, when Zohan checked off the African-American box, he wasn't even American. I used to jokingly introduce my blonde haired, blue eyed South African buddy as my African American friend, but at least he was a US citizen at the time.

by Anonymousreply 11July 4, 2025 1:54 PM

Good job NYTimes.

by Anonymousreply 12July 4, 2025 2:01 PM

Awwww. Cunt R11 is foaming at the mouth again. Hey, R11/R12--guess what? Mamdani will be the next mayor of NYC, and you can fuck yourself.

by Anonymousreply 13July 4, 2025 2:32 PM

Oh, goody, this sad and stupid shit will now be the norm until finally the old and useless fucks get out of the way and accept that he will be the next mayor.

by Anonymousreply 14July 4, 2025 3:31 PM

[quote]Zohran Mamdani identified as Asian & Black or AfricanAmerican on college application

At least he lives in the city he wants to be mayor of.

by Anonymousreply 15July 4, 2025 3:50 PM

No, dear, you'll be fucking yourself, R13.

by Anonymousreply 16July 4, 2025 4:16 PM

What's the problem?

by Anonymousreply 17July 6, 2025 5:12 PM

Falsifying race or ethnicity on a college application, as Zohran Mamdani reportedly did, is unethical because it undermines the integrity of affirmative action policies designed to address systemic inequality. Such misrepresentation reflects poor judgment and a troubling sense of entitlement. It is a big deal, and it may be a reason to vote NO for many.

by Anonymousreply 18July 6, 2025 7:36 PM

What's your point, OP?

Don't have one? No? Fuck off, MAGA freeper cunt fuck.

by Anonymousreply 19July 6, 2025 7:39 PM

Was the application asking about your nationality or your race? I suspect the latter.

by Anonymousreply 20July 6, 2025 7:42 PM

I'm not surprised at all. It's very common.

by Anonymousreply 21July 6, 2025 7:45 PM

Is this like Charlize Theron, who is also "an American who was born in Africa"? Could any application capture the fullness of her background, either?

by Anonymousreply 22July 6, 2025 7:46 PM

Since both his parents are famous, or known to an Ivy admissions committee, it would have been easy for Columbia admissions to fact check, I mean, if they were do to something so petty. They did reject him.

by Anonymousreply 23July 6, 2025 7:49 PM

People who get so enraged and start name calling are missing the point. St. Zohran appears to be a scammer and should NOT have done what he did. He should have known better and his parents too if they advised him to do this.

by Anonymousreply 24July 6, 2025 8:01 PM

Uh-oh.

by Anonymousreply 25July 6, 2025 8:01 PM

by Anonymousreply 26July 6, 2025 8:05 PM

Hakeem Jeffries had to dodge and weave around the subject when asked on MSNBC of all places. Imagine what will happen in a more objective news outlet.

by Anonymousreply 27July 6, 2025 8:14 PM

Why shouldn't he mark Asian and African?

by Anonymousreply 28July 6, 2025 8:27 PM

Hakeem couldn't answer that question. That tells me there is not a defense to be had.

by Anonymousreply 29July 6, 2025 8:31 PM

Um - his dad was a tenured prof AT COLUMBIA in 2009. It's shocking he didn't get in, but it's not like they didn't know him.

And he is African - just not black African .

Another NYT fail. God they've fallen so God damn far in the past 15 years. NYT used to be a respected institution.

by Anonymousreply 35July 6, 2025 9:45 PM

It is too bad he did what he did, probably didn't need to. Very hard to know if he took someone else's spot in a competitive school but it could be that is exactly what happened. He is privileged more than most of us here.

by Anonymousreply 36July 6, 2025 10:00 PM

R36 he took no one's spot at Columbia, since he was rejected. Did he at Bowdoin? Who knows, who really cares. But it was cynical to do it. And he knew exactly what he was doing.

by Anonymousreply 37July 6, 2025 10:03 PM

He is literally an African American.

by Anonymousreply 38July 6, 2025 10:12 PM

Two of my housemates at my Ivy League college were from very wealthy families. One well known and worth over 100 million in 1990. They were black. Did checking "african-american" help their admittance? Who knows. Who really cares. They were black so of course they checked it. Thems the rules. We didn't make them, and everyone knew them. On the other hand I knew an african, black, who was practically the Darfur Orphan he was so poor. I knew some really poor white kids, too. The affirmative action rule were meant to redress historical wrongs and also to create a diverse meritocracy. It stuck in my craw that Senator Pocahontas hemmed and hawed in her responses and backstories, rather than copping to truth. "I was a desperate careerist and I did whatever would help me." It's very human. Something akin to stolen valor.

by Anonymousreply 39July 6, 2025 10:13 PM

Yes, let’s blame him for something he did when 19–a problem caused by how America categorizes race, not anything he actually did wrong

by Anonymousreply 43July 6, 2025 10:15 PM

It’s America’s utter obsession with race that caused this “problem.”

Pathetic to watch Eric Adams, a literal criminal, trying to make this an issue

by Anonymousreply 44July 6, 2025 10:16 PM

R43 An African American is a native black American from ancestral American slavery. Jesse Jackson did not push that term in the 1980s for immigrants.

Stop playing dumb

by Anonymousreply 45July 6, 2025 10:18 PM

I'm not a supporter of Mamdani. He is right to focus on making New York more affordable to middle- and working-class families. I do not agree with his proposed policies. Socialism has had its day, and it will not work.

Mamdani has made antisemitic remarks, and his refusal to disavow "Globalize the Intifada" is deeply troubling.

He has very little experience to boot.

But this earth shattering news about what categories he checked off on college applications? Come on! He is all that.

He's also from a very privileged background. That more than ethnic categories helped him achieve a spot at Bowdoin.

by Anonymousreply 46July 6, 2025 10:27 PM

What he did to get into college was 100% wrong. I am white, but my father's side of the family emigrated to South America in the early 1920s. I NEVER checked off a box saying that I am Latin American when applying to college, and yes that box was an option. I knew it would be wrong to do and so did MAMDANI. If he was such a naive/innocent lamb at the time, he should explain why he did what he did. It is not sitting well with many.

by Anonymousreply 47July 6, 2025 10:51 PM

He is most definitely an African American.

“African American” isn’t a race and shouldn’t be asked as such on college applications.

What they should ask is “are you descended from American slaves?” Because that’s what they really want to know.

by Anonymousreply 52July 6, 2025 11:29 PM

It most likely won’t matter.

by Anonymousreply 53July 6, 2025 11:33 PM

by Anonymousreply 54July 6, 2025 11:38 PM

Websters:

African American noun : an American of African and especially of Black African descent

often, specifically : a direct descendant of Africans who were enslaved in the U.S. or in any area that became part of the U.S.

Oxford:

African American noun /ˌæfrɪkən əˈmerɪkən/ a person from America who is a member of a group of people who have dark skin and whose ancestors came from Africa

Mamdani is NOT from American. And his ancestors did not come from Africa. And they were not enslaved in the usa. And they were not black.

Mamdani is an African immigrant to America, a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2018.

He knew exactly what he was doing. Misleading. Lying.

R60 - I didn't believe that post for a second.

Look - I don't know why everyone is freaking out over Mamdani. The current mayor is pathetic and a crook. Cuomo is an asshole and doesn't deserve to be in office again.

I have no problems with young people who are more left-oriented giving it a shot. NOBODY has experience running NYC until you do - same as being President.

How could he fuck it up more than the past 2 mayors? Seriously?

[quote]You don't get to make up your bespoke definition of African American that includes Zohran Mamdani, Charlize Theron, and Elon Musk. And neither did Mamdani have the right.

In fact you do. This constant sticking us into buckets based on race and ethnicity gets silly after a while. Along with that, you get mad if people who YOU think don't go into a bucket actually do because of the way you titled the bucket.

THe words are "African American." If you don't want Mamdani, Theron, and Musk to go into that bucket, I suggest you find another name for that bucket

by Anonymousreply 71July 7, 2025 2:43 AM

100% agree with R63.

by Anonymousreply 72July 7, 2025 2:43 AM

Pathetic that the right is trying to push this scandal--as if they're so invested in who checks off African American.

I bet Mamdani thought long and hard about this. He realized he's not just Asian; he also has African heritage and there's no other way to note that except African American

by Anonymousreply 73July 7, 2025 2:45 AM

I'm warming to Mamdani.

DeBlasio and Adams didn't seem to understand how income disparities and housing prices were becoming the main issues NYers were worried about. At least Mamdani grabbed on to what matters to most. Whether his ideas will work or not--who knows but we do know that doing the same thing over and over hasnt worked .

It was Black OR African American.

You know good and well what it means.

This is racist AF because you’re literally trying to erase Black Americans. Re-appropriating the term to justify a racist loophole you’re creating.

by Anonymousreply 83July 7, 2025 12:11 PM

Zofran became a US citizen in 2018, he lied on the application in 2009. He was not even an American citizen. This privileged communist has zero integrity with a lot of stupid ideas. Why his fixation with trannies is another question.

[quote] Higher taxes will result in businesses and companies fleeing the city.

I guess, R85, it doesn't matter that the people who are actually "fleeing" the city are those who simply can't afford the cost of housing in NYC. Until that is truly addressed, and dealt with, NYC will only be a city for the super wealthy, with no middle class at all. Job growth and opportunities are not the problem in NYC, it's rents and the lack of affordable places to live.

by Anonymousreply 86July 7, 2025 12:50 PM

Mamdani must be a Republican plant. No better way to tear the Democratic Party apart than pushing this privileged race grifter.

by Anonymousreply 87July 7, 2025 1:01 PM

Oh, brother, R87.

by Anonymousreply 88July 7, 2025 1:17 PM

No one screams "grifter" more than the actual grifter and criminal, Eric Adams.

by Anonymousreply 89July 7, 2025 1:20 PM

R86, yes, that's a problem. Renters need immediate relief. Short term relief won't solve the problem. The better solution is not freezing rent, but increasing the supply of housing. Incentivize building more affordable housing for developers and builders.

Free bus rides is absurd, so are government-run grocery stores.

by Anonymousreply 90July 7, 2025 2:50 PM

The problem with increasing the supply of housing is that ALL housing costs money. A studio is budgeted for approx. $2300 by Section 8 and NYC housing vouchers. This is crazy. A single man/woman in a studio on govt. assistance is costing a fortune and it just gets worse as the family size grows. More housing means more poor people coming to NYC to expect what others have gotten. If NYC is giving more than other places it will always be a magnet for people who need help. If NYC gives about the same as other big cities, there will be less incentive to relocate to NYC.

by Anonymousreply 91July 7, 2025 4:09 PM

Supporters will excuse anything for their chosen candidate. If he didn’t know posing as a Black person was wrong or if he was really so dull that he couldn’t figure out circa 2009 that the application categories:

Hispainic/Latino

Black/African American

Other ______________

were about RACE, he is too dumb to run NYC

PS He’s a complete liar about his freebies, which would entail taxing the middle class heavily as well as the rich.

by Anonymousreply 93July 7, 2025 6:47 PM

Zohran Mamdani identified as BOSSY BOTTOM on college application.

by Anonymousreply 94July 7, 2025 7:16 PM

I don't care for Mamdani but can see him as the lesser of two evils and someone who looks good after two dismal predecessors. The Democratic Socialists in my city council are out of their minds and I would never vote for one. And they are always doing things that they deny are antisemitic. They're exhausting.

Mamdani's video alarmed me at first but it was produced as part of a holiday album by a Canadian Punjabi group that does parodies and had one for Kwanza. I'm sure it was well-intentioned. They're not wearing fake noses and beards to mock Jews.

by Anonymousreply 95July 7, 2025 8:17 PM

Interesting that the major democratic cities are outrageously expensive, including tax-wise, while colleges and universities are driving young people into a form of financial slavery pawning off useless degrees on them, mainly graduate. Zohran got a degree in African studies. Lucky him to be a Trust Fund Victim Communist.

by Anonymousreply 96July 7, 2025 9:55 PM

Cities with Republican mayors: Dallas, Fort Worth, Oklahoma City, Fresno, CA, Mesa, Az, Virginia Beach, Bakersfield, Ca, Plano, Tx, Lexington, Ky, etc, Miami and Scottsdale strike me as the only two I'd spend a month in.

by Anonymousreply 97July 7, 2025 10:02 PM

I'm not suffering from gender dysphoria but I desperately need two (more) dental implants, which will cost about $12,000. Is there any way we can dip into the $65 MILLION "bottom surgery" fund to help a NYC resident of over forty years?

CHEWERS LIVES MATTER!

by Anonymousreply 98July 7, 2025 11:18 PM

R98, I'm starting to think dentistry is a scam. I brush, floss, eat super healthy, exercise, cleanings every 6 months...got two abcesses this week and dentist says two teeth will probably need to be pulled and one implant. Nothing can be done to save these otherwise healthy teeth???!

by Anonymousreply 99July 8, 2025 12:01 AM

R97, that's not the point and it's not about you baby doll.

by Anonymousreply 100July 8, 2025 12:03 AM

The point is that Democratic-run cities are expensive because everyone wants to live there which is not true of cities with Republican mayors. Doubt if the finance world is filled with gender study majors.

by Anonymousreply 101July 8, 2025 12:39 AM

Zohran probably wasn't smart enough to get into this particular college without the lie he told. That is why he did it. It was calculated and it stole someone else's opportunity. Not too easy to forgive, but there has been no apology anyway. Eric Adams is better than DeBlasio, even as an almost convicted felon.

by Anonymousreply 102July 8, 2025 1:16 AM

R102 he did not get into Columbia. Where is dad was prof, by the way. I don't know if it was the same timing.

by Anonymousreply 103July 8, 2025 1:22 AM

Zohran was probably not nervy enough to check the box for African American when applying to Columbia because Daddy would have gotten a phone call from Admissions. He did it at a college in Maine where he could get away with it. Hopefully he will address it head on. At least Elizabeth Warren did that much.

by Anonymousreply 104July 8, 2025 1:56 AM

I am confused. I thought the did it at Columbia. And was rejected. Isn't that what was reported? This is about Bowdoin?

by Anonymousreply 105July 8, 2025 2:10 AM

R105 I think you are right, it was Columbia.

Elizabeth Warren did not address it head on she made up a cockamamie excuse that she was always told that. So of course she decided to identify as N.A.

My parents always said they thought I was the Queen of Sheba, which is Ethiopia, but I didn't decide I was African American at college application time. I guess I should have.

by Anonymousreply 107July 8, 2025 5:06 PM

Oh and the Queen of Sheba is a descendent of Solomon so I'm an African American Jew.

How is lying about your race on a college application a gotcha issue? You people are pathetic and grasping for straws. As a fellow white woman, can you please stop doing racist things (especially taking up space and making issues about you when they have nothing to do with you?). As white people we really really need to be silent, we need to listen, we need to acknowledge that our mere presence can be oppressive. Frankly, it doesn't matter what you "intended". The fact is, you are so damn privileged that you have the luxury of acting first and thinking later, and your only consequence is that *some* people. Do better!

[quote]At least Elizabeth Warren did that much.

Well, yes she did in a completely ridiculous and hare-brained fashion.

She lies about stuff and her stories change considerably over time. Nope.

R82, it looks like a celebration of Hannukah

Please cite even one example

The very fact that Zohran wrote “Ugandan” in his handwriting next to the box shows he wasn’t being calculating.

He’s both a US and Ugandan —so if he was trying to pretend he was Black American, he wouldn’t have written Ugandan.

And why do we assume he would get advantage checking Black or African American? They interview the applicants. They would know immediately he wasn’t black

[Quote] Elizabeth Warren did not address it head on she made up a cockamamie excuse that she was always told that.

Because many many people are told “you have some American Indian” in you, without ever investigating it

by Anonymousreply 114July 9, 2025 5:49 PM

[Quote] Zohran probably wasn't smart enough to get into this particular college without the lie he told.

He actually told the truth. He is literally African American

Rethuglian operatives are trained by Russian Kompromat experts. No dustbin will be missed.

They're so afraid of Z they already have Trump yakking about taking over New York.

Progressive/Socialists: we believe the millions of immigrants entering our country illegally are all saints and we will spend billions to house them!

Also Progressives/Socialists: wah! shit is too expensive and there’s a housing shortage.

Elizabeth Warren was from Oklahoma. Most people have some Native American in them and she did too

by Anonymousreply 119July 10, 2025 1:55 AM

1/64 and 1/1024 (i.e., around 0.1% to 1.5%) Native American from 6-10 generations ago. So it's really great that the Ivy League school hired a female Native American professor to add diversity to the staff. 👍🤡

[quote]As white people we really really need to be silent, we need to listen, we need to acknowledge that our mere presence can be oppressive.

I have a feeling that YOUR mere presence can be oppressive.

Not to mention thoroughly exhausting...

by Anonymousreply 122July 10, 2025 2:04 AM

I don’t see the problem.

by Anonymousreply 123July 10, 2025 2:05 AM

Good lord, you pricks are getting desperate.

I'm not even a supporter of the little pinko, but the fact that the powers that be are THIS desperate to stop him makes me think he's on to something.

by Anonymousreply 124July 10, 2025 2:05 AM

He was 17, teens do all kinds of things — I’d give him a pass on this one. Even though it was a cynical attempt to pass himself off as a Black American student to try to help his chances of admission.

by Anonymousreply 125July 10, 2025 2:14 AM

R125 is such a stereotype.

“I learned the truth at 17…”

Meanwhile, President Anal Fissure announced he'd take over NYC if Mamdani's elected.

Between Donald and Mamdani I've got my money on the latter.

NYC doesn't need another rich entitled weirdo. It needs a fighter for working class New York.

by Anonymousreply 128July 10, 2025 2:19 AM

Madmani has got them all running scared.

Teen liar usually means an adult sociopath.

But it turns out she really didn't.
