Hakeem Jeffries (House Minority Leader) has been speaking for 8 hours to deny Trump a July 3 passage of Big Shitty Bill
He's following what Cory Booker did recently, except this is more significant. Trump was adamant that the Big Beautiful Bill get passed before the 4th of July. Turns out there's a House Rules provision that the Speaker and the Minority Leader have the right to speak for unlimited time. Jeffries is using that little rule to try to run out the clock.
No idea how much longer Jeffries can and will continue. Speaker Mike Johnson obviously wants that vote to happen today. And Trump will go apoplectic if it doesn't, but then Trump goes apoplectic every day.

Fucking moron.
Performative bullshit.
It's an impotent gesture from someone who doesn't have any other options.
I'm embarrassed for him.

He began speaking at 4:53am and is still at it, apparently.
Of course it's performative. We all understand this, R1. But it's something, and it helps show the public that there is vigorous opposition to the bill.

Thank you, r1, for providing the stupid on this eve of our nation's independence.

Related -- polling shows that the public does not approve of the bill, and most do not even understand what's in it. Those who do are more strongly against it.

No, I'm with R1 - I don't see the point of this at all. He's just copying Cory Booker and if that's the only arrow he has in his quiver I can see why the Democrats are flailing.

What do you want him to do, R13? Detonate his suicide vest on the House floor? The American people made the mistake of putting congress in Republicans hands and all he can do is deal with it as best he can.

I heard today that the medicaid cuts won't go into effect until 2027. By then, knowing the short attention span of the average person, everybody will forget that the reason that they're losing their insurance is because of this stupid bill that was passed in 2025.

Speeches on the House floor are useless. He ought to be recording videos for TikTok and YouTube. Most Americans are still unaware of what's in the bill and the floor of the House is an alien environment to voters.

But at the same time, R23, it presents an opportunity for Democrats to run on repealing those cuts before they can take effect.

Itâs congress, not Love Island. You fight battles on the House floor. You donât just let the GOP have whatever they want nice and easy and then post some TikTok videos.

Those looming 2027 Medicare cuts will definitely be a 2026 midterms campaign issue. If the GOP doesnât backtrack sooner on that piece of todayâs legislation and try to pass a correction.

Yeah. Good for NOTHING.
These speeches do nothing.
It's all for show, for his constituents.
But we all know it doesn't do a goddamned thing for regular people.
Time to replace Hakeem Jeffries withDavid Hogg.
David is a REAL fighter, and not just for show, like FAKEkeem.

Hopefully in 16 months the Dems will take back the House. Trump and the GOP are giving them a lot to campaign on. Until then, well, this is how it works. GOP candidates won more seats. Their side is in charge.
I still appreciate Jeffries holding it up for hours and garnering a bit of media attention. He and everybody knew it was going to pass.

I'm convinced they know this and will find a way to prevent it from happening.
[quote]And what would David Hogg have done if he was the House Minority Leader right now, [R31]?
I have mixed feelings about David Hogg, especially after he backed out of even running for reelection, but the problem isn't that what Hakeem did was performative; the problem is that he's basically been mostly asleep for the past few months. David Hogg would likely have been loud and annoying this entire time, and that's exactly what we need (though perhaps less annoying and more present).
I was thinking the other day how much I miss Nancy Pelosi, just in general. You can bet your ass she would have been doing every single interview she could book, talking daily about everything the Republicans have done over the past few months. Letting people know you're still there, and you are listening when you have no real power is exactly what Hakeem hasn't been doing.

G Elliott Morris (a useful source of polling results) says Democrats are very likely to win back the House next year because of Democratic enthusiasm and the fact that Trump won't be on the ballot.

R43 Trump just got a bigger budget than the USMC for his Gestapo. There will not be elections and democrats will not be allowed to âwinâ the house. If midterms are even held, we will see voter intimidation and suppression on an unprecedented scale, and then JD Vance will simply refuse to certify winners if itâs necessary to maintain a majority. I think theyâll either cancel the elections or rig them outright - immediately resulting in a large enough Republican majority to call a constitutional convention. Then theyâll finalize the unitary theory and make Trump the president for life.
