I know the McCarthy hearings hurt many careers. What about today? Do we hate Kelsey Grammer because he likes Trump? Did DeNiro gain fans because he hates Trump?
Can an actor's career be damaged or boosted by their political affiliation?

I've discovered that when I find out some celebrity is a Trumper, it doesn't bother me at all. I never liked them in the first place. IMO it takes a certain "type" to embrace Trump. Now in some cases, take John Voigt for instance, I've enjoyed a lot of movies he is in, not because of him, but because of the movie. So when he took that extreme Right t urn, I didn't give it any thought. Now, I will not walk across the street to see Susan Sarandon do anything. Period. So I guess I've "blacklisted" her because of her political activity. I think today it's more organic. Back then they actively told people who to hate. Today you see something you don't like and you walk away. I'm not into actively trying to destroy people. I just walk away.

I sort of sour on these actors with those affiliations because of the projects they're in.

Susan Sarandon's stupidity should cancel her.

Mel Gibson is still making movies and people are till watching them. So his beliefs such as they are haven't seemed to hurt him except that no one wants to be seen with him socially.

Personally, I think both political affiliation and sexual orientation shouldn't have any career ramifications at all.

Hollywood is more conservative than we'd like to believe. They're woke on pretty much every issue except gay characters in big studio films and out A list leading men.

Ask Zachary Levi in three years, when he’s starring in his 11th holiday TV movie with Candace Cameron Bure.

Clint Eastwood and Mel Gibson are two people who are still engaging with the public despite some 'flaws.' Woody Allen never really lost his cache, though his flaw wasn't politics. Kevin Spacey might make it back. Susan Sarandon, no.

Jane Fonda's career and life suffered after a 1972 incident. She went through a period where she was protesting the Viet Nam War. When touring North Viet Nam she let her picture be taken posed on an anti-aircraft gun. The resulting stink lasted until she made a hit film with George Segal, the 1977 version of "Fun with Dick and Jane". She realized immediately that she had made a big mistake and has apologized for it repeatedly, but to this day some would rather stay mad at her than accept her contrition.

they called her Hanoi Jane. Some still do.

The smart ones stay silent about their political leanings.

I love Jane Fonda. She was right about Vietnam.

She was right about VietNam but she had berated returning soldiers for going there and not dodging the draft. She was a spiteful cunt.

I think Kelsey Grammer would like us to believe that his political affiliation is the reason he's not more successful.

Agreed, r14. The real reason is that he's just worn out his welcome and exhausted us.

Like he wasn't successful enough... most actors can only dream about a career like his.
