Bugle Boy

Sasson was a NYT crossword clue…designer jean whose name was the Hebrew word for “joy”. I spent a while trying to fit “Jordache” into the grid.

Express for Men. That's what I wore in high school and I believe they're going bankrupt. It was the most late 2000s clothing ever

Bugle Boy did have some cute clothes . My favorite jeans ever was a pair of pink cords by Jordache I got in the early 80s. They molded to me like they were custom fit. I pulled much dick when I trotted around in them ! Made my ass look like 2 perfect melons.

Express is still around. There's a store in NorthPark Mall in Dallas, and there was a men's section. I almost stopped in there last week.

United Colors of Benneton still exists.
Like most retail, they're struggling, and it was announced that they'd be closing another 400 stores worldwide by the end of 2025.

Perry Ellis-he died way too early from AIDS, but God he could design clothes. I have too many suits, sportscoats, tuxedos from his company designed by Perry. Really nice guy, very talented.

Marithe and Francois Gibaud jeans.
Polo when it was made in America.
Whatever Lord and Taylor’s house brand menswear was. Good taste, well made.
God I am old.

Liz Claiborne for Men (long before the JCP connection). I wouldn't be caught dead in a JCP.

After that, it wasn't as good.

Ugh - I just went to Benetton's website - no wonder they're going out of business. These are all just basics you can find anywhere.
I remember it being bright, patterned, colorful in the 80s - was I wrong? Was it always basics and I just remembered the ads?
I feel like they could reboot with a new designer at the helm. Just make something different and stylish.
I'm so fucking bored with the same old shit you can buy literally anywhere.

There's a Benetton in my town in Italy. I shop there. Their sizing fits me well.
In the 80s I had a number of things from Romeo Gigli. Loved his stuff.

Doesn’t Esprit live on in Europe? Same with Benetton, but I recall seeing their stores around the US well into my millennial lifetime.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | July 3, 2025 2:57 AM |
So many 80's brands mentioned here - sigh. It really does make me miss the creativity and newness of that decade - yes, some of it was shit, but damn it was fun.
Then everything went dark in the 90s. Since 2000, it's just been the same no-risk rotation of clothing.

Old Abercrombie prior to 2015. Even with their reputation, they had some great pieces that if you picked strategically get some fitted items in classic colors and patterns. Their sister concept Ruehl had nice pieces and the store was like a museum. I have a 15 year old flannel from there that’s still held up.

There was a time when EVERY GUY AT MY HIGH SCHOOL had this shirt in some color variation or another.
If you didn't have one, there was a problem. With you.
