The original 1959 “Gidget” with Sandra Dee, James Darren, Cliff Robertson and Arthur O’Connell. It was charming. There was nothing wacky or kooky about it like all of the remaining Gidget movies and Beach Party movies. I love the beach locations and cars and late 1950s Southern California feel. Sandra Dee wasn’t treacly sweet. James Darren and Cliff Robertson , Doug McClure etc were all tanned, sandy and handsome. The movie smells like clean beach towels and Coppertone. A charming Summer favorite.

I enjoy this movie if for no other reason than what a hamfest it is: the daughter awkwardly passing out in front of the family, the brother shrieking "she drinks!" and there's no apparent concern by the father that he had a grandchild that he never knew about - no, he's concerned that his daughter is a slutty boozer!
I'd add to the charming list: Blithe Spirit - the original, not the horrid remake with Dan Stevens. It's a Noel Coward play so it's got this witty dialogue and portrays the upper class dressing formally for dinner. Great escapism for a mad world!

R125: How cool that you saw it Scotland! I was 16 when I saw it with my dad in Westwood Village, CA (UCLA) -- and we both absolutely ADORED it! We went to so many movies together when I was teenager! My parents separated when I was 14, I spent weekends with Dad. We ALWAYS ended up going to a movie at some point. He exposed me to so many great films that I never would have never seen with my teenage-friends -- such as Local Hero and Missing (which made a huge impression on me). Conversely, I dragged him to movies that he would have never seen on his own, because I wanted to see them a second time. Such as "This is Spinal Tap". My father was of the Big Band generation, he didn't know from Rock n' Roll...but he totally got the joke. He thought Spinal Tap was HILARIOUS! I miss watching movies with him.

Charming now because it's such a beautiful portrait of English private schools in 1968. Tess R178 - Cinematography by Geoffrey Unsworth. One of his last projects before he passed away. One of the greatest cinematographers of all time. It enhanced the film so much. He made the 19th century come to life.

Doesn’t Tess *die* at the end? After many horrid fates that were not her fault? How is that charming?

R185 - Probably it had moments that were charming...plus the cinematography is supposed to be incredible.
I found that little scene of Alec carrying the three girls across the river one by one to be *especially* charming! The look on their faces said it all.
