[quote] The village is referred to as "Wimbedounyng" in a charter signed by King Edgar the Peaceful in 967. The name Wimbledon means "Wynnman's hill", with the final element of the name being the Celtic "dun" (hill).[4] The name is shown on J. Cary's 1786 map of the London area as "Wimbleton", and the current spelling appears to have been settled on relatively recently in the early 19th century, the last in a long line of variations.

Nick Kyrgios 'lands eye-catching new role at Wimbledon' weeks after being dropped by the BBC and hitting out at decision as 'very strange'
Disrupted by knee and wrist injuries, the 30-year-old will not be involved as a player, making this the third consecutive year he has missed out. His last appearance on the court at Wimbledon came in 2022, when he lost the final to Novak Djokovic.
Kyrgios was also overlooked by ESPN this year despite featuring on their panel at the Australian Open, and previously worked for the Tennis Channel and TNT Sports. He is said to be joining the radio station to record a daily half-hour show alongside co-presenter Gordon Smart. Kyrgios will also make appearances alongside Jim White and Simon Jordan in the morning across the fortnight.
Before his new job became public, Kyrgios had taken a thinly-veiled dig at his rumoured BBC replacement - only for him to shoot down the speculation.
Kyrgios claimed that Christopher Eubanks, the world No 108, had been lined up and after beating each member of the 'Big Four' - Roger Feder, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray - he expressed his bemusement with the move.
'It's unfortunate but it's probably their loss more than mine,' he told The Guardian.
'I understand they've got Chris Eubanks, but he hasn't beaten the greatest of all time multiple times. When someone's beaten Federer, Nadal, Murray and Djokovic and has incredible insights, it's very strange you wouldn't want them adding knowledge.'
Eubanks himself took to social media to insist he would not be working with the BBC.
'As far as I know, my team hasn't even spoken to anyone from [the] BBC so I'm not sure where that came from,' the 29-year-old said on X.

by Anonymous | reply 53 | June 27, 2025 10:34 PM |
Thrilled that Kyrgios has been sidelined.
He actually does a decent job of commentating and I like new voices. But he continues to be an asshole to so many people in the sport. Eubanks is five times the human that Nick is.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | June 27, 2025 10:40 PM |
Granted, I don't follow women's tennis as closely because... you know... women, but who is this American McCartney Kessler person seeded #32? Good on her, whoever she is, but HUH?!!
by Anonymous | reply 55 | June 27, 2025 10:45 PM |
I feel like Nick has BPD or something. I know he brags about beating "The big four" but only one of those players is active. Chris is a current player, knows all the conversations in the locker room, knows all the players, and really in the trenches. He knows the lower ranked players from the early rounds well because he's among them and plays them on a regular basis. That's invaluable to the commentary box because I doubt that most of the other commentators are getting any info outside of what their researchers give them on a piece of paper.

wo-time Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur was reduced to tears after she was forced to retire from her round one match.
Jabeur was first out on Court 14 but after just 26 minutes of action in her match against Viktoriya Tomova disaster struck.
The Tunisian looked visibly distressed sat on her courtside seat and a medical time-out was called.
'I've been practising pretty well in the last few days but I guess these things happen.
'I'm really sad. It doesn't really help me with my confidence and what I keep pushing myself to do, even though it was a very tough season for me.
'So I hope I'm going to feel better and we'll see what's going to happen.'
The delay to treat Jabeur lasted 14 minutes before she attempted valiantly to try and play on.
But early in the second set with the sun beaming down and delivering scorching hot temperatures, Jabeur elected to retire.
The Tunisian was down 7-6, 2-0 when she brought an early finish to the contest.

Dare I say it, he looks in a better place to take the 5th.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | June 30, 2025 4:35 PM |
Alcaraz has been crap, but he's good in 5 setters and Fog has the ability to implode a bit - as he already has in the fifth. Blowing a 40-15 lead in his first service game in the fifth set, and now losing two break points in the third game. And just like that, it's 3-0 Alcaraz.

So do we think GMP has a massive, hanging schlong? Or does he have a "good on paper" cock - like 7 or 7.5 inches erect - but would seem small for his body - a la Shaq according to his ex wife. Or somewhere in between.

Make it make sense that Wimbledon officials ended the GMP-Fritz match with play still available for 40 minutes , which could have been enough to complete a fifth set, while the RFC-Rinderknech match was allowed to continue even though there was no possible way for it to finish without mishap (not that I'd call a default by Zverev a mishap) before curfew.

by Anonymous | reply 199 | July 1, 2025 11:58 AM |
R179, the officials didn't end the match; they asked the players. Fritz wanted to play (because he had the momentum) but deferred to GMP. GMP said let's start tomorrow. My guesses are (1) GMP wanted to rest the ankle he tweaked earlier in the match and (2) to keep Fritz from keeping his momentum. If Fritz loses this match, he has only himself to blame for letting GMP dictate what happened.
I like Fritz but won't be sad if GMP wins it.

I haven't read anything since watching the end of the Fritz/MGP match last night but I didn't think MGP weighed in one way or the other. As I read the situation -- and it seemed to be the commentators' take, too -- the official asked the players what they thought, Fritz said he wanted to keep playing, then the official gave all the reasons he didn't think it should continue and made the call himself. Fritz kept muttering "then why ask us?"

There are only three players I dislike on the tour: Djokovic because he's arrogant, a narcissist, anti-vaxx and anti-science. Zverev because of his nasty personality, aggressive behavior on court (especially towards the umpires and especially if they are female) and the alleged DV. Third but not last: Rune. He is a liar (lied about something Ruud said), a cheater (didn't say anything about a double bounce against Cerundolo). He is also a brat, with a terrible and annoying personality. He is always injured if he loses. Oh yeah, and then there's the fact that he's a disgusting homophobe. He was literally fined for shouting a slur during a match. Special mention about Sinner: I don't really dislike him, as he hasn't really done anything wrong, I just think he's boring. His game is boring af and he has no personality. There's a reason he's called sinnerbot. That's what he is. A robot. He acts like one on and off the court.

I think it's called an UNDERHAND serve, not underarm.
Anybody surpised Chris Eubanks lost to de Jong in 5 sets? Not me. Chris had some luck two years ago but he's a much better analyst. John McEnroe was at one of Knicks' pre-game interviews and was asked about some American players who could win Wimbledon. No one will care but since we've been discussing the clownish merits of underhand serve (ENG) / unterarm Aufschlag (DE), the French call it "servir à la cuillière" which you can translate into to "serve with the spoon". They ought to be right since they invented the game, which used to be called the Jeu de Paume in the 17th century, and was later imported in England and renamed tennis because the server at jeu de paume would always warn the opponent that he was about to serve by saying "Tenez", aka, take it.
As for me, I'll always remember how Martina Hingis riled Philippe Chatrier like no one had ever done when serving to stay in the match against Steffi Graf in 1999, using the spoon serve again and again, tenez à la cuillère et tenez à la cuillère, and then sneaked out of the court crying with no intention to ever take part to the trophy ceremony (her mother brought her back forcibly). After that she failed more doping tests than she won grand slam titles.
And twenty-eight years later, seeing Rune's Hingis-like face triggers me like it's 1999 all over again and I want to slap him out of the court like I wanted to slap the smirk out of Hingis' smug face.

Thanks R306! When I went last year it was absolutely pouring rain most of the day and all of the restaurants, lounges, etc were completely rammed. It was unpleasant. Thankfully I got Centre Court in the lottery that time so once they started play we just stayed in there. Forecast looks good today for clearing a bit later.

Cry me a river, Sasha - if there's no joy in your life maybe reflect on who you are as a person.

by Anonymous | reply 313 | July 2, 2025 7:51 AM |
I actually hope the RFC manages to sort himself out. He was in a way groomed to be the POS he became and elite sport is not an environment particularly conducive to emotional growth. At least he recognizes the need to change something; it's been obvious for a while he feels lost.

even setting aside RFC’s personal life and just looking at his tennis, he’s had plenty of chances. 3 GS finals, multiple SFs and QFs etc
He’s just not good enough to improve his game further and take it to the next level and I don’t think he ever will be. And that’s the truth regardless of whether he’s a woman beater or not (allegedly)

Coco's not good on grass (she can be okay at times, but not consistently good) and Yastremska played well (and Coco played pretty bad). Paolini had her incredible 18 months and she's STILL a good player. But I don't think I ever counted on her being a consistent world beater. She's undersized and her serve can be picked on at times. She made two Slam finals - I don't see another in her future. Though she is a good competitor; so if she gets hot and the right draw then who knows. Coco also talked about being overwhelmed with winning the French and the immediate transition to the short grass season. Could just be post hoc rationalizing, but I could buy that it's partly true. She didn't have much spark at all. I'm sure she's happy to be going back to the States, taking a break, and gearing up for hard court season.

First the 'magic potion', now the 'miracle pills'! Novak Djokovic drinks 'pyramid water' from Bosnia and travels with his own electromagnetic field: Inside the tennis icon's weird ways after his first-round recovery at Wimbledon
by Anonymous | reply 407 | July 3, 2025 12:53 PM |
Last year, Djokovic shocked SW19 by returning to Centre Court twenty-six days after undergoing knee surgery.
Unorthodox is the word that befits Djokovic and his various beliefs, from pyramid water to a temple that keeps him calm, or the Bosnian mountain he abides by.
Marginal gains is what Djokovic is all about and this latest rehabilitation will have been littered with quirky ways to return to fitness.
Previously he has shown that he places trust in the healing power of trampolines, the use of meditation to fight off injury, the belief that you can make dirty water clean again with nothing but the strength of your emotions. The list goes on and on.
There was the time Djokovic set an alarm on his phone so he would know – to the exact minute – when a year had passed since he last ate a piece of chocolate.
Or the time he listened over and over and over to The Beatles and a Serbian rock band called Električni Orgazam to perfect the rhythm of his famed return motion.
Or there is the faith he places in the healing power of 'pyramid water'.
In a piece on the official Wimbledon website they detail the 'benefits of pyramid water'.
by Anonymous | reply 408 | July 3, 2025 12:54 PM |
Novak really appreciates the water from the pyramids. He can see it brings him benefits,' Sam Osmanagic, who announced to the world in 2005 that he had discovered the pyramids, said.
'When Novak comes here, he always gets supplies of the water.'
Djokovic swears by it and he has not been quiet about his pilgrimages to the small city of Visoko in Bosnia, in order to 'charge up on the cosmic energy being emitted by the local ancient pyramids'.
'There is truly a miraculous energy here,' Djokovic said in 2018. 'If there is a paradise on Earth, then it's here.'
Traditional medicine and routine practices of rehab do not appeal to Djokovic; his psyche and mindset has long been on a different level.
Food is a key area for him. Specifically, the 'positive energy' that food can distribute.
In his book 'Serve to Win: The 14-Day Gluten-free Plan for Physical and Mental Excellence', the Serbian superstar incredibly detailed how he believes that conversation is influential on the food we eat.
In Djokovic's mind, negative conversation could well be harmful to the food, stripping it of its nutrients as well as its taste.
by Anonymous | reply 409 | July 3, 2025 12:55 PM |
During his rehabilitation now, as her has done for many years, Djokovic is positive in affirming his beliefs to his food before he eats. Wild, but it works for him.
Djokovic explains: 'I believe that if you are eating with some kind of fear or worry or anger, the taste of the food and the energy you get from it won't be as powerful… What you give is what you get.'
He is also obsessive when it comes to chewing, an action that must be focused on entirely.
'As I chew, the process of digestion is already starting,' he wrote.
'The enzymes in my saliva mix with the food, so that when it hits my stomach it's a fully formed piece of 'information.'
As well as being informed by mental practices, Djokovic has invested in modern technology, sporting a Taopatch at the 2023 French Open. The patch, affixed to his chest, is a piece of wearable nanotechnology, with administers a version of acupuncture and light therapy.
More recently, the star revealed during the Australian Open that he had been given a custom electromagnetic device designed to 'enhance metabolic function'.
'It’s (an) energetic disc, (it) creates an electromagnetic field around it and (the) kind of secret is in this pattern,' Djokovic said of his new favourite toy in an interview with GQ.
by Anonymous | reply 410 | July 3, 2025 12:56 PM |
And so when you place it on a certain part of your body, place this part (the centre of the disc), for example, if you have stomach issues, which I do have often when I’m nervous, stressed before the match or indigestion issues, that creates heat.
'So then it starts enhancing the metabolic functions or it reduces inflammation in certain part of the body.
'A doctor that I know in Serbia, who is also an engineer, he created this disc for me and I have a bunch of those and I do carry it everywhere.
'When I fly in the plane, I put it on (my) head or somewhere. I shouldn’t be having it on the body parts for too long, so like 20-30 minutes it does its work.'
More often than not Djokovic is happy to expand on his beliefs, on food, on special water, on not getting vaccinated against Covid, and that was why his 'magic potion' spotted at previous iterations of Wimbledon became so intriguing.
His bizarre Wimbledon drink habit became an even bigger story when he refused to reveal what was in the bottle, claiming it is 'magic potion'.
'Magic potion, that is all I can say,' he said, when pressed.
His wife Jelena, who boasts quirky views of her own, even took a swipe at her husband's critics when it came to the 'potion' in question.
by Anonymous | reply 411 | July 3, 2025 12:57 PM |
'This whole nonsense about making people speak about something they aren't ready because others are inpatient is absurd,' she said.
'Sit a bit in silence. Mind yourself more. Not everything you see is controversial. It could be private. Is that allowed?'
The 'potion' has since been unveiled as Djokovic's SILA electrolyte supplement, which is available for purchase by the masses and contains, as per the brand itself, 'CoQ10, Vitamins C and B12 for cellular energy', and 'proprietary nanotechnology for maximum absorption'.
The front row of his box on Tuesday evening were sporting SILA baseball caps, one assumes for maximum absorption of marketing.
Normally in these weeks Djokovic is frequenting a nearby Buddhist temple.
The Buddhapadipa Temple, on a leafy suburban street just minutes from the All England Club grounds, has been frequented by the reigning champion in previous years.
Djokovic, an Orthodox Christian, once stayed next door to the temple and spent up to an hour a day using its four-acre grounds for meditation and to improve his focus.
'Many years ago he came to stay next door to the temple and every morning he meditated at the temple,' Venerable Piyobhaso, minster of religion at Buddhapdipa, tells Mail Sport.
'He preferred to come in the morning, from 30 minutes up to an hour. Sometimes he spent an hour beside the lake. He became friends with some members.
'Novak is a very friendly person. He always smiled and didn't mind having photos with the temple members. He said that meditation helps with his tennis.'
Whatever Djokovic eats, drinks, prays to, believes in works; it works for him anyway. Because at 38 years of age, he is here, at Wimbledon, full of belief an eighth men's singles title is within his grasp.
If ever there was a reminder this was it: never underestimate Novak Djokovic.

Wimbledon star 'banned by his sponsor' from selling his broken rackets for £5,200
'Holger Rune's smashed rackets are ultra-exclusive collector's items, used in official matches and available in very limited quantities,' the item description on the website explained.
'Why? Because Holger Rune rarely lets frustration get the better of him. But when it does, the moment - and the racket - tell a story.'
However, on Tuesday morning they were no longer being listed, with only his match outfits and other merchandising accessories still available, with manufacturer Babolat criticising the decision to put them up for sale in the first place.
'It’s not our intention to promote broken rackets,' Babolat chief Marion Cornu is reported to have told CLAY and RG Media.
'We're in talks with his agent. Obviously, it's not our intention to promote broken racquets,' Cornu added at the 150th anniversary celebrations for Babolat.
'We have to be consistent with our values, so we're working on that issue with his representatives.'
According to CLAY, Rune's team confirmed that none of his agents or those close to him had been contacted by Babolat.
The outlet adds that the team behind his website chose to take them down as they were reluctant to attract any unwanted media attention and distract the Dane.
Only one of the rackets was sold, with all the money reportedly to be donated to charity.

FAA, fish filleted.....again. It's odd how he and Shapo have followed almost parallel tennis trajectories, slight edge to Felix. Early promise petering out to mid-career mediocrity with occasional flourishes of brilliance. Curious to see whether either one will ever find a way out of the doldrums.
by Anonymous | reply 417 | July 3, 2025 2:09 PM |
I'm done supporting both Shapo and Felix. They have just settled in to 'being on the tour' and apparently that's where the aspirations end. If Tennis Canada is funding them in any way that funding should be revoked. My guess is Shapo really won't listen to any of his coaches; and FAA has little self-confidence leaving him perpetually vulnerable to any opponent at any time. Lazy fokkers all about getting married and being on insta. Both are squandering talent.

Legz+ refusing to play until he can go change his short shorts. They're starting the fifth set and Machac is causing a big delay. Called for the ATP supervisor after the ref told him the rule. Whether he actually wants to change or just troll Holmgren or both, who knows. Legz+ is quite frankly being a bitch.
Some hot, built, biracial guy in the Wimbledon white pants and blue/white striped shirt - some sort of official - followed him off court.

Cilic is 36 years old, has had multiple knee surgeries, and wasn’t even known as a good mover in his prime. Yet Draper kept on hitting the ball directly to him and barely made him move at all.
Cilic was hitting the ball very well, but for most of the match it looked like Draper was teeing the ball up to him like a practice session.

After Mischa Zverev put the boot in about his brother, Sasha; Tsitsipas's new coach, Goran Ivanisevic does the same to Stefanos:
'Goran Ivanisevic spoke out against Stefanos Tistispas after a month of collaboration:
"He keeps saying 'I want, I want,' but I don't see any progress. I was shocked; I've never seen a player so poorly prepared in my life. With my knee, I'm three times better prepared than him."'
A lot of people speculated that those 90s born Next Gen players hat entitlement/attitude issues, and they just assumed that they would automatically be winning slams once the Big 3 started to decline. Sounds like those people were not wrong.

Lennard has the right struff in set two.
Agreed with the poster earlier. People always are hand wringing over Carlos' less-than-stellar earlier rounds, but I don't think it's at all indicative of how he'll perform at the later stage of the tournament against the top players. This is just who he is as a player - a wider range of play than someone like Sinner - but a top end that is as good or better than everyone else. The danger, of course, is that he doesn't get to the end to play the top players because he's at more risk of an upset earlier. My point is that if he DOES get through these tight, non-peak matches, he'll be just fine at the end.

I thought she’d settled into a top 40 player with occasional forays into the 30s or maybe a bit higher.
And I don’t think we could’ve expected more from her. She hasn’t played a meaningful match against a top player in a while as far as I can remember. She needed this.
