It really was a brilliant film beneath the surface. It highlights the hypocrisy of conservatives hysterically pointing fingers and shaming outsiders (gays) who live in unconventional ways but aren’t harming anyone while conservatives, while pretending to be polished, often do much worse things behind the scenes that actually do cause harm.
It was fine until she ate the dog shit. Otherwise, very funny movie.

This desire for Divine to be seen as the “filthiest person alive” is actually a metaphor for the gay community. We get called perverts by conservatives, and instead of letting them bring us down, we embrace it.

I was disappointed when I first saw it because it's just not as funny as his later movies--though it does have its moments.

I appreciate it but it can still be a hard watch. I don’t find the dog shit scene as disturbing as the scene when the chauffeur jerks off and injects the female prisoner with his semen. Yeah, it’s fake but yuck.
I gotta hand it to Waters though in that time has not sanded down the edges of the movie. It’s not a case of “you could never make that now” as much as “how did this ever get made at all”?
Waters strikes a much better balance of humor and depravity in “Female Trouble”.
