Hot air balloon carrying 21 people crashes in southern Brazil
Reports confirm at least eight fatalities and thirteen survivors, some injured and hospitalized.
Balloon nest caught fire, pilot brought the balloon near the ground, 13 people including the pilot jumped off, most were badly burned. The balloon rose quickly and the rest could not get off. Three plunged to their death, remaining five died in the fiery crash. Truly a tragedy.
This is why I would never feel safe in a hot air balloon. If something goes wrong, you have no options.

Seriously horrifying . I went to an air balloon festival one time and was so nervous just watching people take off.

I think I was in a hot air balloon only once as a kid, but it was tethered and only rose a couple meters or so before landing again. No way in hell am I ever actually flying in one. We had one of the worst hot air balloon accidents in the world back in 2012 (6 deaths, 26 injured) and security standards have been raised all the way up to eleven since then, but you still couldn't pay me to try it.

The Chinese have an idiom -- 叶公好龙 (yè gōng hào lóng), meaning, literally, "Ye Gong is fond of dragons." Its origin is the story of Ye, a man who loved dragons. He decorated everything in his house with dragons, put dragons on his clothes, had dragons engraved on his eating utensils. Well one night a real dragon descended from the sky and entered Ye's home. And Ye was absolutely overcome with fear and ran away.
So the idiom means to love the idea of something, but to not love it in reality.
That is how I feel about hot air balloons.

Awful. In this version you can see at least 3 people falling to earth. What an awful way to go. 21 people were on board, with 8 fatalities and 13 survivors.

I figure I didn't have a choice coming into this world and I won't get to choose when and how I go out.
But with 100% certainty I can eliminate 4 causes - blunt force trauma from a jet-ski, snowmobile, and motorcycle accident and death by gravity, fire and impact with Earth from a hot air balloon. because I'll NEVER be on any one of those things.
As it is, I'm pushing my luck with basic automobile driving.

I would never go hot air ballooning in a million years. That would be the worst way to die.

The survivors, including the pilot, had already jumped off when the pilot brought the already-burning craft close to the ground. As soon as those 13 survivors jumped out the now-lighter balloon rose up high in the sky where the rest burned or fell to their deaths. The video begins after the survivors had already escaped.

As a pocket gay, I’m the perfect size for helicopters, jets, and submarines. No. And a firm NO to base jumping, parachuting, and hot air ballooning.
I’m sorry, but I can fit large balls in my mouth and thick things up my butt, but I can’t dare gravity. It’s unpossible and now you know how bright I am.

This reminds me of the 9/11 jumpers. Horrifying. I don't understand why people in hot air balloons are not issued parachutes. At least that would give them a fighting chance

The people falling out of the balloon reminds me very much of the people jumping out of the World Trade Center in 2001.
