I detest bitter foods. And I do not have baby tastes.

Over and over I have tried the following foods hoping my taste buds will change, yet I still hate them. Is there a genetic component ( like those who despise cilantro) or is it learned? If I have these foods given to me at a restaurant or a dinner party, I politely will eat them and swallow without grimace but I abhor the flavors.

Am I alone?

I forgot to list the most offensive foods to me

I’m sure there are more, but these come to mind first.

Besides cilantro which is ascribed to a genetic cause that makes it taste like soap - what other bitter foods are you talking about?

Need more info before we assault you.

You have bitter butter memories, OP.

I actually love cilantro and don’t consider it bitter

by Anonymousreply 6June 21, 2025 6:08 PM

what are the sophisticated and challenging big grown up food that you do like, to prove that you do not have baby tastes.

by Anonymousreply 7June 21, 2025 6:09 PM

What about cock, OP?

by Anonymousreply 8June 21, 2025 6:10 PM

I used to hate mushrooms, blue cheese and Brussels sprouts as a kid, and love them now.

by Anonymousreply 9June 21, 2025 6:11 PM

R5 - ok well, besides coffee, I don't see anything in your list worth getting my boxing gloves on for. No objections.

by Anonymousreply 10June 21, 2025 6:12 PM

Radicchio isn't bitter when cooked. Broken down into a risotto it's lovely.

Boquerones, salt-cured anchovies, bagna cauda?

Garum, Jeotgal?

Époisses, Sbrinz, Taleggio?

Islay Scotch, Fernet-Branca, Génépi, Chartreuse?

woodcock, snipe and partridge?

I enjoy a bitter Italian soda called Chinotto.

by Anonymousreply 13June 21, 2025 6:20 PM

R9 - Brussel sprouts have been genetically altered to remove the bitterness. The sprouts you ate as a child versus today are different. This started in the 90s with cross-breeding by Dutch scientists.

That's why there was a brussel sprout 'boom' the last 15 years. They weren't prepared wrong as a child - that bitter taste you remember was real and now it's not there anymore.

Do you enjoy bitters, OP?

Only in a cocktail.

by Anonymousreply 16June 21, 2025 6:24 PM

Chinotto is absolutely delicious but it must be said it is bitter sweet, and quite sweet finally. same with aranciata Amara.

by Anonymousreply 17June 21, 2025 6:25 PM

R14. But sadly my Brussels sprouts were prepared wrong. Mom bolled the he’ll out of frozen boxed stuff until limp. It was vile.

by Anonymousreply 18June 21, 2025 6:27 PM

OP, just put sugar on all that stuff. Easy fix.

by Anonymousreply 19June 21, 2025 6:29 PM

R19. NO! Grapefruit with sugar is just bitter and vile with extra calories.

by Anonymousreply 20June 21, 2025 6:31 PM

Take up smoking. It will burn off enough of your taste buds that you won't be able to taste much.

by Anonymousreply 21June 21, 2025 6:36 PM

R18 - LOL - yep the ol' boiled brussel sprouts technique of the 70s. But just saying - the boiled Brussel Sprouts of today would have tasted better.

I remember the SMELL. Not only did they taste mushy, bitter and bad - but they smelled like vomit too.

Why did our moms make this? I swear, there would be arguments and showdowns over brussel sprouts every time - yet they would re-appear every few months on our plate. It felt like a power move - like she was getting back at us for something and knowing full well we'd have to eat it.

Felt VERY passive aggressive.
