The hysteria of daily weather reports - why?

It’s the first day of summer. Places are going to be hot. They’ve been hot in the past, they're going to be hot again. Some days will be super hot. Some days won’t be. And yes, we all know the climate is warming.

But weather reporting hysteria has become a real problem. Major news networks leading with stories not about political corruption or war, but weather. “Be careful’! Drink water everybody! OMG stay in the shade! Run for your lives! There will be death!!” JFC! WTF has happened to people??

I'm reading your post just as our Saturday morning local news (with a sexy anchor) started with 'Breaking News' (as they always introduce every news story) about the 'heat wave' moving into our area starting tomorrow. "Temperatures will be in the 90s!" In fifteen minutes we have had two 'weather alerts' about the rising humidity. "Extreme Heat Warning" crawls at the bottom of our screen. After those news reports we then turn our attention to the meteorologist who gives the full week's report...about a heatwave.

So unusual for a summer forecast, huh ? Wait until winter comes, and we have to endure the same type of forecast for an impending snow storm.

Hype sells.

"Catastrophizing" routine events gets eyes and clicks on sites.

It may gets eyes on their broadcasts but it’s desensitizing people to the point they’ll stop believing all of it.

What part of news ratings wars did you miss out on?

Old men are the only ones still paying attention to the news, and they're all obsessed with the weather. So if there's anything noteworthy, media will squeeze blood from the turnip.

Climate is warming, but just to qualify that, it’s largely because the loudest town criers about it are the same ones overbuilding and increasing urban heating centers in every open spot if land, including weighing down coastal areas down to the shoreline tide lines with non-stop high rises and mansions that contribute to beach erosion.

But, yeah, otherwise it still gets hot in the summer, and we now have more people noticing and experiencing it more in evermore populated areas! Think. It. Through.
