Tasteful Friends, this one is personal.

This mid-century modern just popped up on the market. The architect who designed it lived here for 50+ years with his family. It was sold a number of years ago and whoever bought it really understood it. I am very pleased to see that, and I wouldn't change much. As a child, I was friendly with the owner, and he encouraged my passion for design. It's one of those rare modern designs in rural CT that should sell for a LOT more. I am not sure if the agent doesn't understand the house or is just running numbers without understanding the integrity the house has. I would drop everything to own it, but I am in the midst of another renovation. Please buy this and have me over for cocktails.

I love it.

Stunning. I’m thinking there’s got to be a buyer who would appreciate it and preserve it. At that price even as just weekend retreat.

For reference, this house is a few miles away. WHAT WHAT WHAT??? Whoever buys it has INSTANT equity.

It doesn't look very energy, efficient to me.

by Anonymousreply 4June 20, 2025 12:18 AM

It’s sublime, OP. MCM is very soothing to me and this house is very serene.

Yes r4. And oil heating would have to be changed eventually .

I.love the one at r3 as well but it's a bit too busy in comparison.

Meet George Jetson…

I know nothing about the area, but why is it so cheap? Even the land should be worth more than that. (4.6 acres)

by Anonymousreply 8June 20, 2025 12:31 AM

Did your friend the designer explain the lions on the bathroom wall?

by Anonymousreply 9June 20, 2025 12:33 AM

I have friends from college that grew up there, and I've visited there. Beautiful area.

by Anonymousreply 10June 20, 2025 12:34 AM

R8, the land is more about privacy, and the house faces a road. It's 4.6 acres of slope. Also, funny to have a degree of connection to you, Dustin. I think it's hard to imagine, but being out in the country, not all that far from NY is cheaper than some might realize. The lion thing? No idea.

The bathrooms are the only problem

by Anonymousreply 12June 20, 2025 12:42 AM

What might you do instead, R12? I am always curious to see what others would choose.

by Anonymousreply 13June 20, 2025 12:48 AM

I'd look back at the overall look.of the times and adapt it. Nothing too ornate. Maybe a pastel colored tile. Maybe something more artisanal on the floor.

by Anonymousreply 14June 20, 2025 12:56 AM

Wow. I wish the kitchen was better, but I'd give a limb to live there.

by Anonymousreply 15June 20, 2025 1:23 AM

Very nice, OP. I rarely like Mid-Century houses but this one is a nice exception. The wall of glass, the black painted exterior, the setting as if dropped I'm a sea of green leaves and black bark, the treatment of floors and ceiling in wood... It all comes together successfully in a house that's sound and of it's time yet welcoming to different tastes.

I would change the kitchen to something quiet and unobtrusive and very nearly the same, just more elegant in materials. The bathrooms are a question of wallpaper and weather you like the tile and fixtures.

The house has some elegance where many MCM houses just have some kitschiness.

Gorgeous - just needs a few updates.

Two problems: 1) It's 'coming soon' - which is to get a bidding war. and 2) it's in the middle of nowhere.

It's going to go for far more than the asking price, I would imagine.

by Anonymousreply 17June 20, 2025 2:23 AM

I love it, OP

The kitchen is in very poor shape and there’s some messy paintwork elsewhere. My biggest issue is, as always, a flat roof in the Northeast.

I love the mix of artwork on the wall in one bedroom and in the office.

R17, That's the newish problem for some of the towns here; We've been the Anti-Hamptons so long that it's slowly infiltrating.
