Why did Phylicia Rashad sing the INTO THE WOODS role of the witch on the Tony Awards in the 80s?
I thought she was great. But she wasn’t originally in the role, was she?
Is it weird for someone as famous as she was then to take on a part so soon after it opened (or sooner enough that she would be replacing somebody else on the Tony awards performance)?

OP, turn in your gay card.
Bernadette Peters originally played the witch.

She was currently playing the role and it would have sucked if they replaced her with Peters for the broadcast. Plus, she was widely known for The Cosby Show and sold a lot of tickets.

Didn't Bernie already leave the show by the time the Tonys rolled around?

Yes. Bernadette was committed to make Slaves of New York and only signed up for six months to help launch the show.
