Our12.5 year old rescue got killed by a bus on Monday. 😔

He had a hard life and had been discovered fending for himself as a young dog in a wooded area. Eventually he was adopted and then returned back to the same shelter by 3 different people over the course of 10 years. We had picked him up 2.5 months ago from a shelter. A beautiful old beagle mix. He was a sweet dog but would become a completely different animal when he saw people on bikes and scooters and large trucks. When he was in the backseat of our car - he would lunge at the window and bark uncontrollably until the bike/scooter passed. When I took him for walks he'd be better behaved. I was walking him for his morning routine and he was rolling around on the grass (on his back enjoying himself) when a large bus came down the street. He slipped out of his leash and collar and darted in front of the bus. It was instant, traumatizing and brutal. I had to reach under the bus to grab him and he (obviously in horrible pain) attacked my hand and face. He was ripped open and we took him to the emergency clinic and had him put down. Enormous guilt here. Not at all how we had seen his life going. We were trying to provide a loving, fun, supportive environment for him to live out his last 3-5 years. Not looking for pity, just having a fragile moment and wanted to record it somewhere.

Christ, that’s horrifying. So sorry for your loss and the trauma of the whole ordeal.

by Anonymousreply 1June 19, 2025 3:30 AM

God that's horrible. Sorry to hear that, and what a great attempt you made at least to be a good loving dog-dad. Sorry, OP!

by Anonymousreply 2June 19, 2025 3:34 AM

Fuck, I'm so sorry for him and for you.

Big love to you for trying to give him a good life with the remainder he had left, and I'm sorry you didn't get longer with him (and he with you).

Hugs.

I'm so sorry.

You gave him a good life and a good death. That poor dog might have ended up as roadkill if it hadn't been for you. My condolences, don't grieve, think of the happiness and security you gave him.

[quote]r7 ...he (obviously in horrible pain) attacked my hand and face.

Well, you'll always have the scars to remember him by.

How does a dog "slip out" of a collar?

EST.

An extremely fucked up one.

by Anonymousreply 9June 19, 2025 4:21 AM

fake trauma dumping

by Anonymousreply 10June 19, 2025 4:23 AM

I appreciate the supportive comments. Truly thank you. It's bee a really rough week - and I'm not looking for sympathy. just wanted to record this somewhere. I was in the ER this morning with a plastic surgeon addressing the dog bite on my chin and lip. They really did a good job. I've never had stitches before. One thing I did learn - If you ever have a deep skin wound its important to get to the ER and stitched in the first 4-8 hours (or sooner). Mine was 48 hours later and they had to reopen the wounds, clean and stitch me up - it was way more complicated because I waited. Maybe that tidbit will help someone some day when they (or someone they're dealing with) doesn't want to go to the hospital.

Oh dear.

R5, if you’re going to be a cunt, at least be a grammatically correct one.

by Anonymousreply 12June 19, 2025 8:46 AM

I'm so sorry, OP.

by Anonymousreply 13June 19, 2025 8:59 AM

Was it a rescue?

by Anonymousreply 14June 19, 2025 10:32 AM

I'm so sorry OP

by Anonymousreply 15June 19, 2025 11:29 AM

As soon as I hear "rescue" referring to a pet I stop listening.

It's self congratulatory/virtue signaling and often not true.

by Anonymousreply 16June 19, 2025 12:54 PM

It was a rescue - and a senior dog (12.5 years old) who had been turned into the same shelter 3 times. Not trying to self-congratulate or virtue signal - fuck off. I was simply conveying that we didn't pick him up from a breeder or pet store. I was driving home from the aiport tonight and noticed his nose prints on windows of my car - it really sucks he's gone. I appreciate the kind thoughts from people who expressed it. It helped me get through the week.

R9, you can't believe what they can slip out of. They're like mice and cockroaches: they seem to be able to distort their body shape to get into spaces and out of harnesses you could have sworn were impossible. Please console yourself about that, OP. Everyone who has walked a dog on a collar and leash has probably had them escape that way at least once. It's just luck if you can get them back before they've run on a road, got in a fight or fallen off something.

I hope you photographed the marks on your car windows :)

by Anonymousreply 18June 21, 2025 6:17 AM

I am sorry OP. Losing a pet is so devastating especially while you watch it happen. This is why I wont ever get another dog, I just can't handle the loss.

by Anonymousreply 19June 21, 2025 6:54 AM

Reading OP’s post, I think it was suicide… that dog saw the crosstown and his chance for freedom and took it.

by Anonymousreply 20June 21, 2025 7:19 AM

I know this whole story is a lie.

by Anonymousreply 21June 21, 2025 8:41 AM

I have a real story that is true and more traumatizing. Some nut couple living on an acreage right next to Interstate 70 in O’Fallon MO. 1990 or so. Drove by every day on way to work and they’d be out in their yard trying to train their two boxer dogs to respond to whistles. Real whistles like coaches have. It didn’t work. Driving by one day traffic had come to a standstill because the car in front of me had rolled right over one of them and as the woman part of the couple was trying to drag her off the road by her collar the dog in,pain was biting her whole wrist while the woman was commiserating. Horrifying scene I never forgot. The other Boxer dog was cowering and crying in the ditch. He knew something Very Bad was happening.

by Anonymousreply 22June 21, 2025 8:52 AM

Some sap upthread typed "you gave him a good death".

by Anonymousreply 23June 21, 2025 9:18 AM

What bothers me is so many people will rush out to rescue a damn dog, get it its shots, fatten it up, invite it into their bed, let it sleep on the couch all damn day.... yet no one will do that for me.

I'm SINGLE, people!

by Anonymousreply 24June 22, 2025 12:07 AM

Sorry for your loss OP., but dog culture is truly insane. People try so hard to change the nature of dogs instead of letting them live their lives as intended. Cats are perfect pets to keep in the home. Dogs are simply not meant to be kept as indoor pets.

by Anonymousreply 25June 22, 2025 1:54 AM

Good god, this is horrible.

OP- We all end- one way or another.

Your dog had a GREAT later life thanks to your care.

Hang in there and I am so sorry-

by Anonymousreply 26June 22, 2025 2:08 AM

I'm so sorry for your loss and accompanying drama, OP. It sounds awful.

by Anonymousreply 27June 22, 2025 5:09 AM

PETCO Bogo ends Mon. Snooze and lose OP

by Anonymousreply 28June 22, 2025 5:40 AM

I’m so sorry op. You must be in so much pain. You loved him like he deserved to be loved and I hope you can take comfort in that. You didn’t fail him

by Anonymousreply 29June 22, 2025 5:56 AM

It's worse than that R24. They fallow the dog around so they can crap wherever they need to and pick it up for him. You will never find love like that. No one picking up your crap. Sorry.

by Anonymousreply 30June 22, 2025 11:50 AM

All dog walkers should have their dogs on a leash with back up collars the kind that makes it impossible for a dog to slip out of a leash.

Any dog trainer should be able to show how to do this if you don’t know how

An avoidable error
