135-year-old tortoise becomes first-time dad on Father's Day

[quote]Goliath the Galapagos tortoise celebrated an unprecedented double milestone Sunday at Zoo Miami: his 135th birthday coinciding with his first Father's Day as a new parent. The 517-pound tortoise became a father for the first time earlier this month when a single hatchling emerged from a clutch of eight eggs.

[quote]The timing represents more than cosmic coincidence. Zoo Miami has submitted an application to Guinness World Records to document Goliath as the oldest first-time father in animal history. Combined with his mate Sweet Pea's estimated age of 85 to 100 years, the pair may also claim the record for oldest first-time parents.

Tortoises don't parent their offspring. Mom lays an egg and it's bye-bye, see ya, wouldn't wanna be ya.

That's why they live so long, no worries!

Question - how can they tell a tortoise's age? I know there are growth rings and other stuff - but unless he's been in captivity since 1890, how do they really know?

But yeah - once they're born - they're left on their own. The parents leave them.

I would have guessed that Lindsay Graham was younger than 135.

r15 It's not entirely clear who collected him after he was hatched on Santa Cruz Island, but we do have the date of his hatching and he was later transferred to various zoos for exhibition and preservation. He's been in Zoo Miami since 1981.

Dad's like, "Can I eat that, looks delicious!"

Crazy to think that lil' nipper will outlive us all, and our nieces and nephews too. At a certain point in its life, not a single person currently alive on the planet will be around anymore.

by Anonymousreply 28June 19, 2025 7:36 AM

135 but looks 76!

by Anonymousreply 29June 19, 2025 7:46 AM

Since Galapagos tortoises can live up to 177, maybe 135 is about the same as 76 in human years....

by Anonymousreply 30June 19, 2025 7:59 AM

His child will be 175 as the 22nd century comes to a close and the 23rd begins, so might actually live long enough to see that happen. It will be a living link between us in the now and the people then.
