He should have won for Magnolia over Michael Caine.

the honorary oscar is truly the saddest award

by Anonymousreply 1June 17, 2025 6:14 PM

What a shitshoy.

by Anonymousreply 2June 17, 2025 6:16 PM

First of all, hooray for Dolly! While "9 to 5" lost to "Fame" it was understandable -- though I think "9 to 5" has much longer legs. The year she lost to "Hard Out Here for a Pimp" makes my blood boil. That song is nothing compared to Parton's lovely "Travelin' Thru," which reflected the theme and hardship that lies behind its movie source, "Transamerica."

Also, good for Tommy and less enthusiasm for Debbie Allen -- her major mark seems to be on television, but whatever. As for Wynn Thomas, I'm always happy to see below the line artisans receive awards.

by Anonymousreply 3June 17, 2025 6:17 PM

I don’t think it’s sad when it’s given to a legend who never won a competitive Oscar. Staynwyck, Bacall, Angela Lansbury, Peter O’Toole were all deserving.

It’s an interesting list they’ve come up with this year. Congratulations Dolly!

by Anonymousreply 4June 17, 2025 6:18 PM

I am happy for Tom. He is not a great actor by any means, but works very hard and has endured for decades. Dude has dedication if nothing else. Sometimes, he is pretty good. It’s not like Keanu Reeves level bad.

by Anonymousreply 5June 17, 2025 6:19 PM

I agree, R3. traveling Thru is a very good song and I am still surprised the academy gave it to Three Six Mafia over her.

As far as rap goes they got it right with Lose Yourself around the same time.

by Anonymousreply 6June 17, 2025 6:20 PM

Well deserved!

by Anonymousreply 7June 17, 2025 6:21 PM

The Wah 😩 Wah 😫 Wah 😭 Award

by Anonymousreply 8June 17, 2025 6:21 PM

Well deserved - yes he should have won for Magnolia. No one remembers the Michael Caine movie. I'd also have given him a nomination ahead of Michael Caine for Minority Report.

And amazing for Dolly. She is a such a positive force of joy.

by Anonymousreply 9June 17, 2025 6:22 PM

Gotta hand it to Debbie - she's managed to get more plaudits and awards for a tepid, middling career than anyone else I can think of in today's Hollywood.

by Anonymousreply 10June 17, 2025 6:23 PM

If not for Magnolia then for Jerry Maguire. Unfortunately Cuba Gooding Jr had it sewn up in Supporting so the Academy sought to balance it by giving Best Actor to Geoffrey Rush for Shine.

by Anonymousreply 11June 17, 2025 6:28 PM

what next are they going to think 🤔 up to boost that sorry ass movie

JUST LET IT DIE !!!

by Anonymousreply 12June 17, 2025 6:35 PM

STILL NO Oscars for:

Bette Midler

Michelle Pfeiffer

Sigourney Weaver

Glenn Close

Annette Bening

Kathleen Turner

Debra Winger

Mia Farrow

by Anonymousreply 13June 17, 2025 6:40 PM

All I can say is that thank God that they corrected the Euzhan Palcy snubs. Directing four movies over 14 years is a testament to her creative genius.

by Anonymousreply 14June 17, 2025 7:01 PM

Thank God it’s a separate ceremony

by Anonymousreply 15June 17, 2025 7:12 PM

R24 she directed two classic films, with little support, outside the US. She is a strong representative fur international independent cinema.

Fuck off at your convenience.

by Anonymousreply 16June 17, 2025 7:14 PM

Glenn snubbed again.

Close, but no cigar.

by Anonymousreply 17June 17, 2025 7:15 PM

R14 ^

by Anonymousreply 18June 17, 2025 7:16 PM

Dolly will receive the Academy’s Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. About time, between her COVID money and giving millions of books away to kids, it's long been earned.

by Anonymousreply 19June 17, 2025 7:16 PM

Yea- that’s not an honorary Oscar—it’s a distinct honor.

by Anonymousreply 20June 17, 2025 7:18 PM

What? Before me???

by Anonymousreply 21June 17, 2025 7:26 PM

Glenn's chances of an Oscar went up in smoke the moment she uttered the phrase.....

"I can smell your nappy pussy."

by Anonymousreply 22June 17, 2025 7:28 PM

[quote]He should have won for Magnolia over Michael Caine.

Michael Caine is an actor, so it's not a fair comparison.

by Anonymousreply 23June 17, 2025 7:31 PM

Tom Cruise has made billions of $$$ for the Industry and he's been a major star for 40 years. He's a freak and a weirdo, but he does deserve this.

by Anonymousreply 24June 17, 2025 7:34 PM

I think he deserves an award for box office achievement and career management, but an Oscar, should be an award the recognizes excellence in acting. I don't think that's appropriate for Cruise even though he's undeniably a box office star.

by Anonymousreply 25June 17, 2025 7:36 PM

imagine being tasked with giving out one of these faux awards?

by Anonymousreply 26June 17, 2025 7:37 PM

r5, what are you talking about? he's a great actor!!! You have to go back decades to his work like Born on 4th of July, Rainman, etc etc.

The only movie that I didn't like was that Magnolia movie...

by Anonymousreply 27June 17, 2025 7:49 PM

Jerry Mcguire was awesome!

by Anonymousreply 28June 17, 2025 7:49 PM

c'mon, Oscars can be bought...otherwise...there wouldn't be "campaigns" for them!!! Just ask Harvey!

by Anonymousreply 29June 17, 2025 7:50 PM

R25 read up on the history of honorary Oscars…he fits easily into the mix.

by Anonymousreply 30June 17, 2025 7:53 PM

I thought he won for Born in the Fourth of July?

by Anonymousreply 31June 17, 2025 7:53 PM

^on

by Anonymousreply 32June 17, 2025 7:54 PM

You thought very oddly.

by Anonymousreply 33June 17, 2025 7:55 PM

R31 Nope, Daniel Day-Lewis won.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 34June 17, 2025 7:56 PM

Not that odd. He was nominated.

by Anonymousreply 35June 17, 2025 7:56 PM

He had a very credible run in prestige films in addition to the huge box office successes

1988 - lead in best picture winner

1989 - lead in best picture nominee, best actor nominee

1992 - lead in best picture nominee

1996 - lead in best picture nominee, best actor nominee

1999 - best supporting actor nominee

by Anonymousreply 36June 17, 2025 7:56 PM

There’s no award for lead in a nominated picture 👽

by Anonymousreply 37June 17, 2025 7:58 PM

No shit R37!!

How many other actors have been lead or joint lead in 4 best picture nominees in a decade?

by Anonymousreply 38June 17, 2025 8:01 PM

[quote]How many other actors have been lead or joint lead in 4 best picture nominees in a decade?

A quick check to answer my own question reveals Russell Crowe had 5 between 1997 and 2003 - two Best Picture winners and one Best Actor

by Anonymousreply 39June 17, 2025 8:05 PM

[quote]Dolly will receive the Academy’s Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

I can see her being honored at the Grammys, but the Oscars? Her only memorable connection to movies is 9 to 5.

Tom Cruise is most deserving.

Debbie Allen's only connection to movies is a bit part in Fame back in 1980.

by Anonymousreply 40June 17, 2025 8:06 PM

Oof, a new category! Joint lead?

Keep rocking’ that chair Meemaw

by Anonymousreply 41June 17, 2025 8:06 PM

Ok, how much did he and Miss Cabbage pay for this?

by Anonymousreply 42June 17, 2025 9:44 PM

Scientology driven participation ribbon

by Anonymousreply 43June 17, 2025 9:49 PM

Accepting the award for Tom Cruise is his wig.

Carrot Top’s stunt double

by Anonymousreply 45June 17, 2025 10:42 PM

R16 , two whole films!? Classics?

by Anonymousreply 46June 17, 2025 11:07 PM

Tammy does NOT deserve an Oscar

She deserves a Razzie for "Worst Wig"

by Anonymousreply 47June 17, 2025 11:09 PM

I thought Tom gave an Oscar worthy performance in Collateral, he played a serious hitman. Jamie Foxx was a cab driver he took hostage to drive him around the city so he could kill specific people. He really was good.

by Anonymousreply 48June 17, 2025 11:16 PM

He never gave an Oscor nom-worthy performance, let a lone Oscar-worthy. Maybe this is Hollywood's way of saying it's time to stop.

by Anonymousreply 49June 17, 2025 11:20 PM

Collateral is a very good movie and Tom was adequate. Whenever he isn’t terrible, it seems like he’s good (but he’s really just not terrible.)

by Anonymousreply 50June 17, 2025 11:28 PM

He was excellent in The LAst Samurai. As I think on it, he made a lot of movies I enjoy. So give him his fucking OScar because he has been very good to the industry.

by Anonymousreply 51June 17, 2025 11:42 PM

What the fuck...WHY is Debbie Allan getting an Oscar?!?!?

For badly choreographing some Oscar shows?!?!?

by Anonymousreply 52June 17, 2025 11:45 PM

Seriously, I don't know why Debbie Allen is getting an Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 53June 18, 2025 12:00 AM

Tom does deserve it though. For all that he has done for the industry. I personally believe as far as consistency he is a better dramatic actor than Will Smith. Though he has never given a performance on the level of King Richard.

by Anonymousreply 54June 18, 2025 12:12 AM

Good. Give the raving cultic lunatic a shiny prize for a career of shallow crap flecked with overreach and the inability to relate to others EVER.

by Anonymousreply 55June 18, 2025 1:57 AM

The only time he attempted acting was Born On The 4th Of July

by Anonymousreply 56June 18, 2025 2:09 AM

😂😂😂 @ R15!

IYKYK!

Congrats to Cruise. I wish he had won one, however.

He’s old enough to know it’s all bullshit, so this works too, I suppose.

by Anonymousreply 57June 18, 2025 2:25 AM

Debbie Allen has done a lot of TV and received many Emmy nominations, and has received a couple of Tony nominations for work on Broadway, but what the fuck has she ever done in the movies? She’s never received an Oscar nomination in any category.

Neither has Wynn Thomas, who has gotten a few art directors’ group awards/nominarions, but no Oscar nominations. Putting them in the same league as Tom Cruise, who has gotten a few nominations and who has been a movie star for over 40 years is ridiculous and insulting.

by Anonymousreply 58June 18, 2025 2:32 AM

She's 5ft 5 inches, she cannot act& she has Scientology slaves cleaning her home Her best role was Risky Business, when she cums out of the closet I'll respect her.

DOLLY PARTON-FUCKING A

Debbie Allen- Why God Why???

by Anonymousreply 59June 18, 2025 2:40 AM

It’s a travesty that Bette Midler doesn’t have an Oscar at this point. Her filmography is top notch and she’s given many iconic performances.

by Anonymousreply 60June 18, 2025 2:43 AM

R52 Peasant bye. Have several mafuckin seats. I had to unretire mafuckin for that blasphemy.

by Anonymousreply 61June 18, 2025 2:45 AM

Tom is winning for best Scientologist.

by Anonymousreply 62June 18, 2025 2:45 AM

Oh, c’mon, teacake @ R61.

I love the hell out of Ms. Allen too, but what R52 stated is correct.

Why is she getting an Oscar? I’ve never seen her open a film and give an Oscar worthy performance, and neither have any of us, including YOU.

by Anonymousreply 63June 18, 2025 3:03 AM

I'm pretty sure Lea Michele shat in that wig.

by Anonymousreply 64June 18, 2025 3:15 AM

R63 Fame walked so every fucking film in its genre thereafter could run.

by Anonymousreply 65June 18, 2025 3:30 AM

OK, TCD @ R65, I’ll give you that. Very true.

by Anonymousreply 66June 18, 2025 3:36 AM

To R66, I agree with you but what has Debbie Allen done?

by Anonymousreply 67June 18, 2025 3:54 AM

Ah yes, the Sylvester Stallone Memorial Oscar for Making a Lot of Money for Other People Without Ever Exhibiting the Least Art in the Process.

by Anonymousreply 68June 18, 2025 4:49 AM

R68 Wouldn’t you say there’s something about his first performance though in Rocky that’s sort of sublime. It just works. The acting is so bad it’s like watching a documentary with big Hollywood dramatic moments and a killer score. It just works. It’s subversively brilliant.

by Anonymousreply 69June 18, 2025 5:16 AM

R67 it's a legitimate question. Her resume is rather thin compared to Cruise. But she is a producer and she has directed. She was one of the producers of Amistad. Yeah. And she did most of her work on TV.

by Anonymousreply 70June 18, 2025 5:57 PM

Debbie Allen's stupid interpretive dance numbers at the Oscars were always a joke. Phil Cates, the producer of the Oscars at the time, had a hard-on for her so she was on every year. Once Phil was gone, so was Debbie.

by Anonymousreply 71June 18, 2025 6:52 PM

R71 it’s a joke because their African influenced right? Get some taste. Just like when people used to say Britney Spears danced better than Queen Bey, with that simple robotic 1-2-3 steps. Beyoncé was not only doing choreography but also intricate rhythmic dancing.

by Anonymousreply 72June 18, 2025 7:15 PM

r72 maybe you're too young to remember what a laughingstock Debbie's dance numbers were.

And anyone who uses "Queen Bey" is a simpleton.

by Anonymousreply 73June 18, 2025 7:17 PM

you can almost hear the publicists working overtime to get their clients one of these fake oscars, so they have a shot at an EGOT

by Anonymousreply 74June 18, 2025 7:40 PM

An EGOT only counts if all four awards are won in a competitive category, imho.

by Anonymousreply 75June 18, 2025 7:42 PM

R75, says who?
