“Dept Q” - Netflix British crime series - Solving cold cases in Edinburgh - And so much more

Has a little of everything - Hunky Matthew Goode looking like he’s sleeping rough, your favorite recognizable Scottish actors and those lovely Scottish accents, mysterious characters and suspects everywhere, a dedicated squad of misfits, and a Missile Silo.

Based on a series of Danish Nordic noir crime novels by Jussi Adler-Olsen, known as 'Department Q' (Danish: Afdeling Q).

The DL has been discussing it here:

Yes, I know.

Steven Miller has the juiciest tatas, I had no idea they were hiding such jewels up in Scotland.

Shame he shaved his chest, I'd like to see him in his full glory.

[quote]From the Alexej Manvelov thread:

Steven Miller - he of the incredible body (any screen captures?) - also plays Reverend Alan Calder, the brother of DI Ruth Calder (Ashley Jensen) in ’Shetland’. And ‘Dept Q’ gay copper Colin Cunningham played by Angus Miller, also appears in ’Shetland’ as Donnie Russell (husband of Tosh).

A growing Scottish cabal of good actors to rival the British cabal.

(Stay away from IMDB on 'Dept Q' if you haven't finished the series. There's a rather usually innocuous entry that gives away a plot point.)

I missed the missile silo. Spoiler?

Spoiler?

There is the tanker at port. Or warehouse on a dock. Where is the missile silo?

by Anonymousreply 6June 16, 2025 2:24 PM

The precog twins at the premiere.

Look how much better he looks here. He needs to lose the porn stache and steal that wig from the set.

Listened to The Watch podcast interview with Scott Frank from last week. Couple of bits I found interesting:

- He said he got the rights from the author 15 years ago because Adler-Olsen wasn't happy with their Danish adaptations. He sat on them all this time, until the author contacted him again a couple of years ago, asking him if he intends to do anything with them.

- His friend Tony Gilroy (Andor) told him to do it with less backstory next time, but Frank insists you need all that for the emotional payoff when all those ghosts are visiting her at the end.

- He said he had always found Goode too posh for the role, until he met him for the first time and he was hungover and wearing a leather jacket. He then bombed his audition, but was asked back for another shot at it. It was between him and DL fave Jeremy Renner. (Can you imagine?)

- Netflix hasn't approached him yet for a possible second season.

- He's doing the Red Harvest adaptation next.

Oh thank God Renner wasn’t in this. I’d have had to skip.

by Anonymousreply 10June 24, 2025 9:42 AM

It was fun but annoyingly implausible at the end, as though phones had never been invented or police never call for backup. For a show that is supposedly focused on human relationships, it became too plot driven and dependent on twists.

by Anonymousreply 11June 24, 2025 9:49 AM

I can't watch anything with Renner in it, I just can't with that potato face. I bet the execs were pushing him, thinking he'd be great for the ratings.

And what, he'd play a Yank detective who somehow gets his own department in Scotland (as if!) and then we'd be subjected to endless American jokes? Or, as an even more terrible alternative, he'd put on a posh British accent? File this one under Seconds From Disaster.

by Anonymousreply 12June 24, 2025 1:14 PM

We just finished it. Fucking awesome. And Steven Miller....holy fuck!

by Anonymousreply 13July 2, 2025 3:18 AM

Import Steven Miller, NOW!

by Anonymousreply 14July 2, 2025 3:19 AM

Preposterous. And I loved it.

by Anonymousreply 15July 3, 2025 1:03 AM

^^^ My partner thinks it's primarily because I liked the characters. I think he may be right.

by Anonymousreply 16July 4, 2025 11:30 AM

Which is a pretty damned good reason.

Just started the first season.. WOW!!

Loving it so far!!

matthew goode’s hair system is very distracting. mama no likey.

also, he needs to eat a burger or two. the veins in his zero bodyfat face shouldn’t be their own character.

by Anonymousreply 20September 8, 2025 2:04 AM

Oh, shut up, r20. He's gorgeous. Perfect. And that green sweater. Yeah, just shut up.

by Anonymousreply 21September 8, 2025 2:06 AM

gorgeous, yes, so why hide it behind a weird bang/toupe thing?

by Anonymousreply 22September 8, 2025 2:41 AM

I really don't think that's a toupe, looks like his real hair, with very natural grey inclusions. But if it is, it's the single best one I've ever seen.

by Anonymousreply 23September 8, 2025 3:17 AM

Truth is, r22, Matthew Goode is almost always so perfectly attired and groomed, it is an absolute delight, to this fan at least, to see him looking less well put together. Live with it.

Loved the Syrian sidekick. “I am Akram.” “What did you do in Syria, were you with the goodies or the baddies?” “ When you find out which is which, let me know.”

by Anonymousreply 25September 8, 2025 3:47 AM

I wish I had a job where I could say to my boss "don't ever interrupt me again while I'm praying." Seems like a nice gig, if you can find it.

by Anonymousreply 26September 8, 2025 4:01 AM

The name "Dept Q" sounds like your standard Netflix sci/fi or urban fantasy title named for the department assigned to investigate supernatural phenomenon and other strange happenings.

by Anonymousreply 27September 8, 2025 4:08 AM

Like the X Files, r27.

by Anonymousreply 28September 8, 2025 4:44 AM

[quote]Like the X Files, [R27].

Yes, r28.

The name gives that same vibe.

by Anonymousreply 29September 8, 2025 4:48 AM

The X Files was original for its day, r28.

Department Q (Afdeling Q) is the name of the original Danish novel series, which Netflix turned into Dept. Q.

I recognize that.

All I'm saying is that the name in English as a title on Netflix has an adaptation-of-a-YA-supernatural-novel-series sound to it.

There are plenty of things that sound cool in their original language which would have specific connotative and denotative meanings, but in translation don't hit quite the same.
