David Beckham, Gary Oldman and Roger Daltrey knighted in King’s birthday honours
Former England football captain David Beckham, actor Gary Oldman and The Who’s Roger Daltrey have all been knighted, while stage performer Elaine Paige, novelist Pat Barker and former Tory minister Penny Mordaunt were all given damehoods in the King’s birthday honours.
More than 1,200 people from across the UK were handed honours, with the top gong going to Sir Antony Gormley, the sculptor behind the Angel of the North, who was recognised for his services to art with a Companion of Honour.
News of Sir David’s knighthood broke last week after the football star had been in the running for more than a decade. He has been made a knight for his services to sport and charity – working with Unicef and Malaria No More – two decades after he was first made an OBE.

Why was some chav soccer player knighted?

Penny Mordaunt was a real star of the Coronation, so not surprised there.
Congratulations to Gary Oldman, whose mad acting skilz mean he is nearly always overlooked in those illustrious forums where people are routinely given awards for being the same, but very charismatic, in everything.
(Don't Oh Dear me, I know it's fora.)

What did Penny Mordaunt do to deserve a Damehood?

More importantly, what did David B. do to piss off his hair colorist?
That beard and those eyebrows were drawn on with a medium brown Sharpie.

All it does is take away your desire to criticize your country when it needs to be. It’s really quite brilliant, no?

More and more "chavs" will be need to be honoured to keep the House of Windsor popular and relevant.

I hope the rumors about Alan Rickman turning “honors” down was true.
Nonsense. Sir David? lol

Yeah, Gary always seemed to dwell just under stardom for decades.
He lives permanently in Palm Springs now and seems like a regular guy.

Lots of people turn down honours and that's fine.
But I also think it's right that people who have achieved excellence in their chosen field should also be honoured by their country.
The people who sneer at Beckham generally do so because they think he's common and that sport, in particular football, is inconsequential.

Then why would he live in Palm Springs, one of the gayest places in the US?
I'm guessing that David and Victoria Beckham are also right-wingers.
It seems to be the pre-requisite for receiving a knighthood from King Charles.

R15 - I think he's had a mix of comments over the years about PC run amok and other comments that are liberal. I don't think anyone can steadfastly say he's conservative or even anti-gay.
He likes Palm Springs because it's close to LA and a lot easier to do everyday life things. He mentioned this in an article. Just going to the store, doctor's appt or running an errand in LA took a long time. PS is pretty small. I doubt that it's his only home though.

Charles takes recommendations from the PM and the government. Some were speculating tha Beckham finally got the long-coveted honor because it's a Labour government now.

Better to have voted to leave the European Union than be a paedophile, frankly.
Other than exercised his democratic vote is there any reason why a music legend like Roger Daltrey shouldn't be honoured by his country?
Last year Imelda Staunton was made a Dame - she exercised her democratic right by campaigning for Labour in the election.
I'd rather recognise achievement without a deep dive into the person's electoral history.

Honours are not decided by the King. He just presents them.

It's crazy how in the pic @OP 50-year old Beckham looks like Oldman's (67) and Daltrey's (81!) contemporary.
Bad, bad eye work and dye job.

It's quite funny how the protests in the US were labelled "No Kings" as a lot of those participating would appreciate Charles as their head of state.
He understands inequality, representation and compassion and duty.
I'm a republican (UK terminology) in principle but as long as Britain remains the way it does I'm quite happy for Charles and William to be head of state.

R25, it's also interesting that Canada seemed to appreciate King Charles addressing the opening of the Canadian Parliament last month. Canadians have been moving away from the monarchy in recent decades, but I think they were glad that it sent a message to the Orange Ass in the White House.

R25 At least with your system it is easier to rid of a party and Prime Minister with a no confidence vote and have King Charles dissolve parliament and call for new elections. In the US we have to wait the 4 years out or try to impeach and remove from office. I wish we had something more like the UK. We could still have a president as head of state instead of a king, but have a PM as head of government.

R28 Yes. We can't "call for early elections" or dissolve the government like with parliamentary systems. A President is elected for a 4 year term, full-stop (as you say in the UK). Impeachment, in itself, doesn't lead to removal from office. Both Clinton and Trump were impeached during my lifetime but neither removed from office. Richard Nixon wasn't impeached, however he almost certainly would have been and then likely removed from office by senate trial had he not resigned. No US president to date has been removed from office before the end of his term. The only presidents to not serve out their terms were Nixon and those that died in office.

Biggest difference is that King Charles doesn't have much political power, and the type of kingdom Trump seems to want is more of a dictatorship.

Oldman lived for many years in Los Feliz while his kids were going to school. They are older now so he must have just recently moved south to PS.
Interesting to see Meryl Streep in those clips with King Charles in London at his Trust Foundation event. Is she in line for an eventual Damehood at some point? Yes they do give them to Americans, if they are famous enough and are popular in the UK. See: Steven Spielberg.

Does anyone believe that Pete Townshend will ever receive a UK honor, like an MBE or CBE? Or were his sexual allegations considered at such a level that he'll never see a gong.

Townshend will never get an honour.
There's a joke about him in Gavin & Stacey where frequent name dropper Nessa says she used to be a roadie for The Who. She says she quit when she found out some things she didn't like and she said it to his face "Where's the book Pete, where's the book?".
A man who admits to paying for images of children being abused is not going to be forgiven.
