Someone mentioned on 'The View' thread a few years ago that he had major falling out with Joy (she used to say they were best friends, so she claimed) and he was quietly dropped from the show. He used to show up every couple of months throughout each season - especially if a scheduled guest called out (at the time, Cantone lived close by their studio).
Someone who claimed 'to have knowledge' of the situation in a gossip column also said Cantone and Behar had quite the blow-up backstage one day, and that's when the show dropped him. I think in the past five years he has only been on very briefly a couple of times, and both times were when Joy was not on the show. (IIRC, others said he had the falling-out with Whoopi, and those two had the blow-out backstage.) I'm glad he's gone.
