He interviewed many people who knew and worked with Mary. There was no strong evidence that she had any sexual relationships in her life.

Mary lived with her mother throughout her mother’s life and became “single” in mid-life. She had many gay male friends, and she acknowledged and included the partners of those that had them. She was also of course great friends with Lucille Ball.

The core of the issue seemed more that although Mary was a great friend and companion of many people, she was unable to form intimate relationships with anyone of either sex.

Some friends said that Mary occasionally expressed her loneliness when she was going home from a social get-together, but they also said she never was able to do anything about it. Most of the time, Mary would say she loved her life as it was.

Mary Wickes was an actress audiences knew by sight but not name. I saw her do Wonderful Town in LA (not Ruth or Eileen obviously) and when she made her entrance, the entire audience delightedly went "Ohhhhhhh".

She was the villain in White Christmas and that is a hill I’ll die on. I’ve watched that movie once a year for the past six decades, and every time I have to question aloud why she didn’t get any comeuppance.
