Move over, Miss Close - Nicole Scherzinger being discussed for 'Sunset Boulevard' movie
Glenn Close, the 'Sunset Blvd' train might leave the station after all, but you won't be boarding it after 25 years of lobbying for it. It looks like with the new success of the musical's revival both on Broadway and The West End, star Nicole Scherzinger is the one boarding the train - and she's manifesting this dream right now.
"I'd love to do it all. I'd love to do some interesting films, some really bold, daring roles. I'd love to do a movie musical, obviously. Still waiting for someone to do Sunset Boulevard the movie musical with me. Music, still. I wanna just do stuff that shows all of me and continue to do singular stuff like this show is."
Scherzinger recently said that there has been "some talk" of a Sunset Boulevard flim adaptation, stating: ""That is my dream, so I’m manifesting that right now."

Isn't she still a bit young to play an over the hill Hollywood star? I mean, 46 isn't exactly "young," but it's not exactly ancient, either.

Glenn is too old at this point in her career. R1 Nicole is actually early to mid 40s.

Gloria Swanson was only 50 when she starred in the movie, so I guess Nicole is just about the right age. She just doesn't really "look" the role.

Glenn Close was 47 when she took the stage, while Lupone was 44. Make-up can make you look a little older, probably easier than making you look younger.
I'm wondering if this will be a cinematic release or a Netflix / HBO release.
R2 Nicole turns 47 in two weeks.

Glenn would have been fine in the movie circa 2000, but Nicole would definitely be more apropos now.

Glenn could still pass for forty, so these excuses don't really add up.

R6 when the movie project was really 'heating up', it was in 2004-05. That's when ALW's list leaked out of who he wanted to play Norma - Barbra, Meryl and Glenn (in that order). Barbra had said the 'project' she was sent needed a lot of work and was no where near ready to go in front of the cameras (ALW disagreed), while Meryl wasn't too excited about doing it. Close was most interested, and ready for it - but then it kept stalling at Paramount. (In the meantime, David Gest was telling everyone that his wife Liza was 'thisclose' to signing the contract to do the movie, unbeknownst to all involved).

Nicole might be a good choice for the movie, but not for at least 5 years. She’s still too young looking. Put it this way - she’s younger than Kate Winslet and Kerry Washington.
I also suspect that she can’t act for the screen.

The stage version, and her performance, only worked if you took nothing literally and turned off any cerebral functioning. Unlike her costar, she hasn’t shown the acting chops to play the role outside of Jamie Lloyd’s construct. This sounds like a recipe for a Hollywood flop.

Exactly. Swanson’s Norma was vain about her body and her health but she couldn’t hide the ravages of time if she wanted to. Today, 50 year old Hollywood actresses are still very attractive by any standard. Cosmetic procedures, exercise and nutrition protocols are just exponentially better.
Unless they are unlucky Meg Ryan or Nicole Kidman and their face doesn’t handle plastic surgery well, they’re probably still sexy and beautiful. Look at Jennifer Connolly, Halle Berry, Naomi Watts, Angela Bassett. Ditto the “girls next door” types like Julia Roberts. Jennifer Aniston and Sandra Bullock.
Imagine telling a washed up 30 year old writer he has to squire around Charlize Theron or Eva Mendes. His bros would be jealous af.

R83 I'll make it a little easier for you to understand:
Four of ALW's stage musicals were made into movie musicals for the silver screen. One was released in 1973, one was released in 1996, one was released in 2004 and one was released in 2019 - but I'm not sure why the release dates would matter on their box office success or failure.
Of those four, 2 were box office hits, and 2 were box office flops. For you to say you side with R20 who says 'ALW's movie musicals have all flopped' makes the two of you wrong.

They should just computer de-age Glen. The person in this role needs to be able to act. They can fix her singing in post-production too. There's more to the context of its success (and faults) than just the box office number ranking.

A la Chita Rivera in the movie version of Chicago, Glenn may be offered a consolation role - in this case, that of the dead monkey.

R120 Because each actor had a 'no full nudity' clause in their contracts, so they had to do the scene in their underwear, not nude.

Glenn Close for the Hollywood adaptation is laughable and only something some old DL queen who still listens to Melissa Manchester and beat off to Robert Redford in magazines back in the day could only imagine happening.
Unless producers want the movie to make $100 dollars at the box office, they would have to heavily adapt and remake the musical for Gen Z and millennial audiences.
The people who loved the musical 20 years are dead or too old / disabled to even go to the movie theater.
Nicole should play a washed up star from the 90s or even a pop singer.

At the time of the film and the musical, Norma was 50-ish. She had been retired from film since "talkies" forced the end of her career. In the source film Swanson was only 50, had the Theda Bara-ish look and movement so many now seem to affect when playing Norma. Many silent film "stars" were 15-18 and previously waitresses, a quality I like to see in a Norma. In today's Broadway show Nicole Scherzinger plays mad beautifully. She certainly would do well in the film, doing a traditional version, no need for a revisal.

The thing is, no matter how glorious Ms. Close can be on film, at her present age I don't think she would work well as an older Norma.

R134 Definitely not true and I’m not saying Gen Z is so hooyah over Nicole Sherzinger but think about what you are saying. Pussycats Dolls and Dontcha were hugely popular when they was in grade school. And a couple of their songs get recurrent play on adult top 40. Nicole was/is also a sex symbol. It’s the nostalgic factor. I bet most Gen Z cannot name G on sight alone. She would be “that’s the lady from…” territory.

R136 Wrong. Her solo career went nowhere because like most solo careers, the songs were trash in an overly saturated market. Also she was too racially ambiguous. When it comes to women, that will hurt you. However, she still remained a relevant sex symbol constantly on the cover of Maxim, presenting at award shows, etc. I have Gen Z friends but more importantly pay attention to sociology. Gen Z grew up with social media, blogs, internet culture. They knew who she is way more than Glen Close.

I wasn’t even thinking about Gen Z! I was thinking about millennials! People under 45!
You guys are so old you don’t realize under 45 year olds were just SMALL children the musical first came out. They were barely teenagers when Glenn Close took the role.
With that said, if you guys think people under 50 would go and see this movie with Glenn Close, you must be not aware how old you are.
The Gen Z jokes fall flat cause you think only teenagers wouldn’t know who the hell Glenn Close and Sunset Boulevard are lol

R142. I agree with you. She has never lead a film and I actually don’t know if she ever made a theater released motion picture. That’s not my point. Her performance in Sunset has picked up steam on TikTok & social media. Nicole Sherzinger is a fairly well known B list celebrity and is beautiful. This will we need a bigger audience than elder theater queens. Unless it just plans to be a NY/La theater/art release which it doesn’t have that intention because look at the casting debated. G is my favorite. When is the last time she had a commercial hit. Not success but hit. Cause that Hillbilly elegy flopped.
I have a little bit of a marketing/advertisement background. Nicole could successfully make this thing a mainstream type hit bigger than the award season, year end best lists. Oscar noms don’t even really make films wildly financially successful like they used to.

G is the greatest actress of all time, so there is no doubt in my mind she is capable of delivering a truly stellar performance that might make this the smart man’s Wicked. However I feel like this thing is having a small pop culture moment with Nicole. It would be wise for Hollywood to think outside the box and seize it. G has aged out.

She only attempted her solo career once. People are acting like she is some flop one hit wonder. Pussycat Dolls is the most successful female group of the aughts and I keep iterating this, Nicole Sherzinger is a sex symbol. She is definitely marketable. She just went solo with all the Beyoncé’s, Rihanna’s, Keri Hilsons, Fergies, and Christinas. Then she didn’t try again. What she did do is lead one last Pussycat album after solo flop, that was again successful. There are iconic superstars whose debut albums flopped. And still are flops. In the music world, you cannot be racially ambiguous as a female. It will hurt you amongst females. It weird. People didn’t know if she was Puerto Rican, white, or a lightskin black girl. And then the last name made it rougher lol. That’s why half black Mariah had to be black, even though she presents white. She also had a 4 octave range and whistle register though.

I don't think there's an audience for a Sunset movie. Wicked is a huge long running musical with a fandom size audience. Where is the fandom for Sunset Blvd? There's not even an audience here for the theatre friendly DL crowd. Nicole Scherzinger is never going to happen. She lucked out and found mainstream success as the lead in a sexy girl group. Her solo career fizzled, and she pivoted to reality TV to get steady paying gigs (Dancing with the Stars, The Sing-Off, X-Factor UK, The Masked Singer, etc.).

If they do it, it would probably have to be done on a smaller scale, and go direct to streaming. The time for it to be a big theatrical piece has long since passed with how the industry is now. Should have been done in the later 90s to mid 00s using Glen. ALW should have gotten directly on it after Evita.

Nicole Scherzinger 'has Andrew Lloyd Webber's support to star in a film adaptation of Sunset Boulevard after successful Broadway run'
Nicole Scherzinger has reportedly got Andrew Lloyd Webber's support to star as Norma Desmond in a film adaptation of Sunset Boulevard.
The former Pussycat Doll, 47, won critical and public acclaim for her recent portrayal of the faded silent film star on Broadway.
Nicole is reported to be '100% committed' to the musical, which won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical.
The LA source told The Mirror: 'Andrew wants to make the movie with Nicole. He feels the momentum after the Broadway run needs to be harnessed.
'There is a sense that this is closer than ever now which, for Andrew, will be a delight, given the years he's worked for it.'
The source went on to claim that filming could begin as early as next year if the project progresses in time.
They said: 'Andrew feels Nicole and the cast have the appeal to bring musicals back to the Oscars. People forget the film versions of Les Miserables and Chicago both blew up in cinemas and scored rafts of awards.'
Nicole has previously discussed the possibility of starring in a film adaptation of the musical, admitting earlier this year: 'That's my dream.
'So I'm manifesting it right now.'
The Daily Mail has reached out to representatives for Andrew and Nicole for comment.
The claims come after Nicole reportedly brought the house down with her final dramatic performance in Sunset Boulevard last month.

I kind of feel like Glenn would be the definite choice (and she seems fairly close to ALW), but the movie should have already happened. It's been too long. Maybe she is willing to give it up now that Nicole came along and was a big success in the revival. It's sad, though, to think it could have been Glenn. But I really do think she has more or less aged out of the role. If they started filming tomorrow, it might work, but what are the chances?

Let's face it, Sunset Boulevard is no Chicago, which had all memorable songs while SB has maybe two. I saw Glenn in it and I loved the staging but overall the show felt overstuffed with music that wasn't needed.

In this version, none of that matters. All that matters is twerking on the floor and giving 25 foot face.

R229 Norma was once a beautiful girl, now she's an aging beauty whose ego has made her a bit ridiculous. CZJ can more than pull that one.
