I’ve seen this on many shows. Is it still done? What is the story behind it?
UK people… what is behind the tradition of bringing grapes to someone in the hospital?

The new DL. Find the answer to your question and post it anyway!

I don't think it's done seriously these days. It used to be a treat - something even the most evil of doctors couldn't forbid you. So unless you have a grape allergy, it's a pretty harmless, but nice gift.

Not from the UK, but your metabolism goes to shit fast when you're lying all day long in the hospital bed. I went in for the appendix and needed an enema on the second day because I couldn't evacuate.
Needless to say, grapes are excellent for this purpose. I tried cheating with two coffees instead and experienced such searing pain overnight, a doctor had to be called in.

"Grapes? Oh thank you. One can never have enough GRAPES when recovering from a ski accident?"
side whisper - "Nurse, please ban all visitors - I've got 6lbs of fucking rotting grapes in here already and the fruit flies are getting ridiculous. What am I supposed to do - make fucking wine out of it?"

I think they were less available back in the day so it was a bit of a luxury and now it has become a bit of a tradition.

It's for the patient to eat a sweet treat, but that's healthy and has fiber. But it is an old custom that is not done much today, at least not in the US.

I remember in the 2001 film FROM HELL, Jack the Ripper is able to lure the whores with grapes before slaughtering them.
Made me realize that Brits must really love grapes, because it's going to take more than fruit to lure me into a dark alley.

NHS nurse here. It’s an outdated cliché.

Jesus, R3
What had you been eating before you went in to get your appendix popped?

Brits are retarded.

Which when you look at the US R12, with well over 30% of the population hailing from the British Isles, does add up.

If it's a constipation issue have they never heard of prune juice in the UK? That would work far better than grapes.

Another option, which startles me when I see it, is bringing a "pot plant" - two nations divided by a common language indeed!
