Gavin Newsom is now a frontrunner for 2028

Funny how quickly things change. In just a few weeks, Gavin Newsom has emerged as a favorite to be the Democratic nominee in 2028. Trump made a major political error by elevating Newsom this month and revitalizing his career. His popularity is skyrocketing.

by Anonymousreply 142June 14, 2025 2:28 PM

Nothing in that clip says anything about his popularity “skyrocketing”. It says people are searching his name on google more, that democrats want leaders to stand up to Trump, and that betting markets at the “clown car” stage show him at 12% for 2028, two points ahead of AOC, which predates this week’s news.

How all this turns out is still very much TBD. Sadly, I fear this is the news cycle and reality show that Trump is all too good at manipulating.

by Anonymousreply 1June 12, 2025 2:47 PM

Google searches, really? Show me the polls in swing states instead.

by Anonymousreply 2June 12, 2025 2:48 PM

I'm not feeling it, dawg.

by Anonymousreply 3June 12, 2025 2:49 PM

At best a poll is a snapshot in time. And a lot of these polls are seriously flawed. MAny of them are garbage. So chill out and go play pickleball.

by Anonymousreply 4June 12, 2025 3:00 PM

He has peaked too early.

by Anonymousreply 5June 12, 2025 3:04 PM

Newsom is tall, fairly good-looking, articulate, a great debater, and has a sarcastic nasty temperament when needed - traits at the top of the wish list in today's shallow political climate. Not surprised he's gotten a boost from his higher profile this week.

But it's really early, and a lot more candidates will wax and wane over the coming months.

by Anonymousreply 6June 12, 2025 3:12 PM

Frontrunner this early rarely are part of the final picture.

by Anonymousreply 7June 12, 2025 3:15 PM

I would vote for him. He's about the only potential Dem presidential candidate who's forcefully saying what needs to be said.

by Anonymousreply 8June 12, 2025 3:15 PM

Watch the video. Newsom knows how to fight back.

Newsom on Trump: "He's lost it. He hasn't lost a step. And I saw him trip on the steps today. This is serious. He is not the same person that I dealt with just four years ago. And he's incapable now of even a train of thought. He's making things up and he's putting people's lives at risk."

I agree these google searches don't really mean jackshit, but I think we all can see Gavin Newsom brought his future presidential hopes back from the dead this week. His stupid plan of becoming some kind of reasonable centrist, reaching out to douchebros and Trump cult members was killing him. Now he's finally realized what everyone else had realized: we don't want no fuckin outreach. We want somebody who looks like he actually gives a shit about defending this country's rights against the fascist regime in the White House.

by Anonymousreply 10June 12, 2025 3:19 PM

Could happen. Re: peaking early, well, this is REALLY early. Biden left office in January, and now it's June.

Obama announced his candidacy in very early 2007 and began to catch a bigger and bigger wave from there. That timing sounds right. It might kill some of you to wait a year and a half before it's early 2027 and things start to get real for 2028, but wait we shall.

AOC is dynamic but too young, too progressive to win the battleground states, and there is likely some short term Dem party reticence to choose a woman again after Trump sequentially defeated the Dems' first two female Presidential nominees. AOC would do well to strengthen herself in House, maybe try for Senate if there's an opportunity... and position herself long term for 2032 or 2036 when she's in her 40s. I hope she follows that course.

Shapiro is Jewish and a strong Israel supporter; if things worsen with Israel he may be too polarizing a figure to try to claim leadership among this herd of cats, some of whom have long supported the Palestinians and a huge and growing number of whom are sickened by what Israel is doing to Gaza.

Newsom's chances do look a lot more interesting now, and potentially stronger, depending on how the next two years go with this battle in the public square between him and Trump.

Pritzker's another one to watch. As is Wes Moore.

by Anonymousreply 11June 12, 2025 3:28 PM
Trump made a major political error by elevating Newsom this month and revitalizing his career. His popularity is skyrocketing.

To be fair, trump is an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 12June 12, 2025 3:36 PM

Thanks r9, he is impressive there. "Stone cold liar!" over and over again...wish other Dems would learn how to fight back like this. Newsom's not my overall cup of tea but he may do it for now, he's got the vicious fight in him that is necessary at this pivotal timepoint.

Agree with nearly everything Torta posted, above, esp regarding AOC. She needs to stay the course in the House (take Pelosi's route, to the Speaker seat?) or get Schumer's Senate seat. She's great with the base, but not electable nationally, not in today's climate. Some years of exposure and further maturation will bring her big gains, nationally.

by Anonymousreply 13June 12, 2025 3:36 PM

I like him a lot - he's not perfect, but I don't understand the hate he gets. Everybody bitches over things on their agenda that doesn't 100% go their way and blames him for it. It's more complicated than that.

Will he win over Republicans in red states? No - but no Dem ever would. However, I think he appeals to Independents and is a great candidate for 2028.

AOC will never win, as much as I like her style and what she does.

by Anonymousreply 14June 12, 2025 3:40 PM

America loves mean and stupid (Trump), we've yet to see how they would receive mean and smart. This week has been huge for Newsom.

by Anonymousreply 15June 12, 2025 3:42 PM

JB Pritzer is my fav. Or Amy Klobuchar, but doubt it will be a woman. Both have consistently fought back and demonstrated a lot of courage.

by Anonymousreply 16June 12, 2025 3:47 PM

AOC is a natural agitator and a great backbencher. I suspect she'll never be either president or Speaker, but so what? She's got a great role, pushing from the left and very forcefully advocating for her ideological positions. She would suck at being some kind of "consensus builder" and shouldn't strive to be that.

by Anonymousreply 17June 12, 2025 3:50 PM

R16 - unfortunately, Pritzker's optics aren't good - obese, from a family of billionaires. I know Trump is fat and a supposed billionaire, but he gets a free pass on everything.

Amy Klobuchar is great - but I think we see how the electorate treats female Presidential candidates.

I like them both a lot - but Gavin is the most appealing on so many levels.

by Anonymousreply 18June 12, 2025 3:52 PM

I don't see Klobuchar as comparable to Clinton and Harris; however, not sure she can live down the Mean Boss image.

Newsom's problem is that California has a negative image in the rest of the country. Bear in mind that for '28 we don't know what a post-Trump party looks like to run against. For Dems, they need to tone down the social issues, especially identity politics. Economics, especially crazy thoughtless tariff blundering, is where R voters have doubts to be exploited.

by Anonymousreply 19June 12, 2025 4:05 PM

R17, the bloated pig squatting in the WH doesn’t GAF about “consensus”, why should AOC?

Why are Democrats held to a much higher standard than thugs?

Rethuglicans can be racist, bigoted, stupid and mean and never lose a vote. Even when they proudly and loudly broadcast what an utter pile of shit they are continually.

But Democrats have to be perfect. They can’t say or do anything offensive to anyone or they get roasted by other Democrats and the media. Why do we eat our own instead of attacking thugs?

I am no fan of Newsom. I don’t like him at all. He comes off as sleazy and slick, especially when he was courting all of the incels. Maybe he’s learned that was dumb and will stop that shit. But right here, right now? I fully support him and will cheer him on as he is the ONLY person standing up to these thugs.

Where is Pelosi? I’ve seen Kamala and Maxine Waters condemn this bullshit. Where is Schiff? Where is Pelosi? They could at least put out a statement condemning the sending of troops and in support of Newsom.

Newsom seems to be fighting this alone. Nobody else wants to help for fear of upsetting the rethuglicans.

by Anonymousreply 20June 12, 2025 4:08 PM

It's not about making Democrats perfect or holding them to any particular standard. It's recognizing that not everybody is right for every role and everyone doesn't need to strive for every single role. I like the AOC we have. I think she'd suck as either president or Speaker. Different roles, different talents.

And yeah, Trump sucks at actually being president. I realize he's got a cult and a following and a lot of power now, but he actually sucks at the actual job. And I don't particularly want to see some leftist sucking at the job either.

by Anonymousreply 21June 12, 2025 4:17 PM

Gavin Newsom wouldn't win. The right democratic nominee is thinking who is going to play well in Wisconsin. Have to keep your eye on the prize.

by Anonymousreply 22June 12, 2025 4:25 PM

No matter how you slice it or dice it, he's still a greasy, sleezy, corrupt machine politician who can't keep his dick in his pants. Do Democrats really need that kind of baggage?

And as we have seen, Republicans can do greasy, sleezy and corrupt. Democrats can't.

by Anonymousreply 23June 12, 2025 4:26 PM

Newsom should go at Trump with all guns blazing just for calling him "Newscum." When Trump goes low, Dems need to go lower.

by Anonymousreply 24June 12, 2025 4:27 PM
No matter how you slice it or dice it, he's still a greasy, sleezy, corrupt machine politician who can't keep his dick in his pants.

Are you talking about Trump, with his rape case and pornstar affairs?

by Anonymousreply 25June 12, 2025 4:31 PM

No, R25. I am referring to Newsom.

As i said in my post at R23, Republicans can do corrupt and sleezy. Because of their ineptitude with messaging, Democrats can't do corrupt and sleezy.

by Anonymousreply 26June 12, 2025 4:37 PM

I don't give a fuck about 2028, I'm more concerned about the here and now and who is standing up to the Orange Jesus. I wish more would do like Newsom and take the gloves off. In 2028, I don't know if I will look favorably on any politician who was being too polite or quiet during this moment

by Anonymousreply 27June 12, 2025 4:38 PM

My money is on Cuomo if he wins Mayor for NYC… He can take on Trump since he knows him so well….both have similar personalities You need a loud brash outspoken candidate to go head to head with that asshole!

by Anonymousreply 28June 12, 2025 4:38 PM

I'll never understand the distrust of California - although it aligns with some people's hatred of ANY urban big economy area. People hate on NYC, Midwesterners hate on Chicago, etc.

To be honest, there are very few states that I have an overall positive opinion of - and zero of them are not on the coasts.

I know people who live in smaller states or outside of big urban areas have little lives and are bitter but I'm tired of pretending that their beliefs and way of living is more valuable than big city inhabitants.

The far right is going to find SOME bullshit to say about whatever Dem candidate is or where they are from, it shouldn't stop Gavin from running.

by Anonymousreply 29June 12, 2025 4:44 PM

R20 -- Here was Pelosi yesterday. Where were you to have missed it? Are you one of those people who claims things never happened because you were personally not aware of them?

The purity testing that goes on in the Democratic party is insane, and debilitating. You never see Repubs tolerating this - once they're behind a candidate, they are BEHIND them 100%, no matter what they seem to do or say.

Dems can never get behind a consensus leader, because some subgroup or wing of the party always finds fault. No one will ever be perfect or please everybody.

by Anonymousreply 31June 12, 2025 5:32 PM

R31 this GOP cultic loyalty vs "Dems In Disarray" seems true in the Trump era but I studied right wing media during the Bush and Obama years and it was interesting... the base had doubts about McCain and were told to suck it up and vote for him because he's "electable"... he lost. Then they had doubts about Romney and were told to suck it up and vote for him because he's "electable"... he lost.

This, together with Obama presidenting while Black, plus other factors... all helped to further radicalize the base to the point where they were like a cage of pitbulls by the time Trump announced his candidacy in mid 2015.

by Anonymousreply 32June 12, 2025 5:37 PM

Democrat here. [bold] I am staying home on November 7, 2028 if Newsom is the nominee. [/bold] This clown has been pushing the Tranz Ideology for years. His "big issue" of immigration is a LOSING one. He is too slick. He ain't winning Pennsylvania or any other swing state.

by Anonymousreply 33June 12, 2025 6:03 PM

Thanks for sharing, r33. Were you one of those who voted for Joe in 2020 and stayed home in November? You sure sound like one. Perhaps you'd be more comfortable joining Rogan, Maher, et al. You're useless dead weight to us.

by Anonymousreply 34June 12, 2025 6:30 PM

R33 is Exhibit A for R31.

by Anonymousreply 35June 12, 2025 6:30 PM

R34 You have no clue why we lost last November. When we pick LOSING issues (immigration, gender ideology), throw in a weirdo fem governor (walz), and add a California Liberal at the top of the ticket, it means we LOSE. Again. gee fucking whiz.

by Anonymousreply 36June 12, 2025 6:43 PM

You should really get a load of its posting history, r35. Only two threads all related to Gavvy. Aimless professional contrarian who clearly didn't vote for Harris and has an obsessive hard on for Newsom.

Full disclosure, I don't particularly like Newsom personally, but why should he bend over and passively accept Trump’s mushroom? He's doing the job we elected him to do

R33 - You, OTOH, have spread yourself to become vulnerable to a good ol' fashioned GOP gang rape. Recall the law Everything Trump Touches Dies.

by Anonymousreply 37June 12, 2025 6:43 PM

Newsom is despised outside of California and even in California. He stands no chance and his ex knows where all the bodies are buried. Gavin is an alcoholic.

by Anonymousreply 38June 12, 2025 6:56 PM

I want to first hear what Nancy Pelosi thinks about him. She knew Hillary was a loser, which is why she supported Obama early on. And she knew Kamala was a loser…she pushed for an open convention, until senile Biden torpedoed it.

by Anonymousreply 39June 12, 2025 7:01 PM
He stands no chance and his ex knows where all the bodies are buried

Guilfoyle hasn't lived in California for over 21 years.

by Anonymousreply 40June 12, 2025 7:03 PM

R38 - No he isn't. Most people don't even know who he is. Why do YOU despise him?

Just because he didn't think trans should be competing in the same competition as women? He's right.

by Anonymousreply 41June 12, 2025 7:08 PM

A US Senator was just dragged out, thrown down on the floor, and handcuffed. There is very little assurance there will be an election in 2028.

The need is for leadership RIGHT NOW to push back at the forces trying to destroy the American Republic. Newsom, by circumstance and nature, is positioned to lead. I think he's a complete douche, and I 100% support him. His public comments in the last few days are exactly what's needed.

by Anonymousreply 42June 12, 2025 7:15 PM

Newsom thinks MEN should be using womens restrooms.

by Anonymousreply 43June 12, 2025 7:21 PM

Is that the only thing you're concerned about, r43?

by Anonymousreply 44June 12, 2025 7:23 PM

R44. Nothing. You learned absolutely nothing. Not a damn thing.

by Anonymousreply 45June 12, 2025 7:30 PM

R33 sure, Jan

by Anonymousreply 46June 12, 2025 7:43 PM

The nominee is going to be Josh Shapiro. He has a lot of support from average working class people of both parties who view him as normal, sane, moderate, and concerned about the issues affecting most people’s daily life.

by Anonymousreply 47June 12, 2025 7:47 PM

R45 - Are you telling us that the 6.2 M Democratic voters who stayed home in November were motivated to stay home because the Trans?

AI overview:
Data on voter turnout in the 2024 US Presidential Election indicates that there were 6.2 million fewer Democratic votes cast compared to the 2020 election.

by Anonymousreply 48June 12, 2025 7:48 PM

And yet, early voting smashed all records in swing states and more people voted early than ever before.

The math ain't nothing, r48

by Anonymousreply 49June 12, 2025 8:17 PM
He stands no chance and his ex knows where all the bodies are buried. Gavin is an alcoholic.

Sounds like our current POTUS, just substitute "sex predator" for "alcoholic". Personal baggage isn't stopping voters anymore.

r39 Pelosi LOVES her some Gavin, she's partly responsible for his political career and has supported him since the beginning. They used to be related via marriage - Gavin's aunt was once married to Nancy's BIL, one of the Pelosi clan. Her kids grew up with him, they share cousins.

by Anonymousreply 50June 12, 2025 8:21 PM

R40, she lived with him for years. She will be out there running her mouth about what she witnessed. He had to go to rehab for alcoholism and fucking his staff. He turned California into a shithole and is now sucking up to the far Right with his ridiculous podcast. He’s hated on both sides.

by Anonymousreply 51June 12, 2025 8:23 PM

R50, it stops liberal voters and Americans hate California and the party who screams believe all women and then is in reality abusing staff. No one cares about Trump because he didn’t present himself as anything other than a pig to begin with. The Left is seen as the party of scolds and the public isn’t going to stand for its hypocrisy. No one from California is EVER becoming president.

by Anonymousreply 52June 12, 2025 8:26 PM

Not sure why any of us are wasting any time predicting who will be the best candidate. It feels like the election is 100 years away. We have no idea how bad things will get between now and then and it maybe like the 2020 election where the electorate was willing to vote for a turnip salad because they were so sick of Trump

by Anonymousreply 53June 12, 2025 8:30 PM

R51 - you're insane - Newsom turned California into a shithole? LOL - riiiight. He's only been governor for 6 years.

Where do you people come up with this shit?

by Anonymousreply 54June 12, 2025 8:40 PM

R43 sounds just like that shrill harpy Phyllis Schlafly circa 1977.

by Anonymousreply 55June 12, 2025 8:45 PM

R52 = Exactly. Michigan ain't voting for a California Liberal who thinks a man in a dress is somehow a "woman", defying basic genetics. Also supports Assembly Bill 1955. He is AGAINST parental notifications, because apparently the SCHOOLS should know more than Mommy and Daddy.. Loser.

by Anonymousreply 56June 12, 2025 8:50 PM

You sound really desperate r52. He's definitely running in 2028 and did himself a world of good this week. He has a good chance of being the nominee and the winnter. Stop shrieking and whining. It won't make any difference.

by Anonymousreply 57June 12, 2025 9:07 PM
He has a good chance of being the nominee and the winnter.

sigh. Who wins the Summter?......

by Anonymousreply 58June 12, 2025 9:11 PM

He would be a disaster. Dems would lose the swing voters and the younger voters.

by Anonymousreply 59June 12, 2025 9:13 PM

The public has shown it will stand for all kinds of fuckery and nonsense if it feels like it will get something out of it. That will be the challenge for Newsom, but I suspect he's up for it.

by Anonymousreply 60June 12, 2025 9:13 PM

There's no way. He's widely loathed

by Anonymousreply 61June 12, 2025 9:22 PM

What the fuck world do people think we're living in? But, Paw, he ain't pure. And he says one thing and then does another. Why that jest ain't right!!!

Yeah, I think Gavin Newsom can weather those storms. People may not like him for other reasons, and someone else could easily emerge in the primaries. But the idea that he better be some paragon or America (THIS AMERICA? You fucking kidding me?) will reject him is too goddamn stupid to even deal with.

by Anonymousreply 62June 12, 2025 9:27 PM

He's widely loathed.... and JD Vance isn't?

Again this is all way too early. We have a full 2.5 years of plot twists to get through before the 2028 primaries begin to begin.

by Anonymousreply 63June 12, 2025 9:27 PM

Or is he the Ed Muskie of this cycle?

by Anonymousreply 64June 12, 2025 9:53 PM

Gavin Newsom is a good governor—and a popular one. As a Californian, I would love to see him as president. I am concerned about his popularity in the rest of the country. Plus Newsom would destroy weasel asshole JD Vance in a debate.

However, I want a Democratic winner no matter who it is so I will continue to watch the candidates and campaign unfold.

by Anonymousreply 65June 12, 2025 9:55 PM

Yes, the Dems should run their widely loathed figure against the Republican's widely loathed figure

I am smart

by Anonymousreply 66June 12, 2025 9:57 PM

Prove to me that Gavin Newsom is widely loathed. Where? By whom?

by Anonymousreply 67June 12, 2025 10:02 PM

R51 - You are simply too stupid to breathe. She's been in the GOP cabal for nearly two decades and as close as one can get to the inner workings of Fox and MAGA. If she knew anything of value it was long ago divulged strategically to further her career and/or during pillow talk.

by Anonymousreply 68June 12, 2025 10:27 PM

[bold] Prove to me that Gavin Newsom is widely loathed. Where? By whom? [/bold]

Arizona. Georgia. Pennsylvania. Nevada. Michigan.........Just ask Kamala.

by Anonymousreply 69June 12, 2025 10:42 PM

Hmm, R69, Gavin has some, er, advantages that Kamala lacked.

by Anonymousreply 70June 12, 2025 10:44 PM

A new poll, conducted by co/efficient between May 7 and May 9 among 1,462 likely voters, found that just 2 percent of voters see Newsom as the face of the Democratic Party. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 71June 12, 2025 10:50 PM

Face of the Democratic Party? yeah, stupid poll getting the stupid result it was asking for. Nobody is the fucking face of the Democratic Party until the next nomination. Why would any dumb bitch think otherwise?

by Anonymousreply 72June 12, 2025 10:52 PM

That's a whole lot better than future nominee/president Jimmy Carter would've polled in June 1973, R71.

by Anonymousreply 73June 12, 2025 10:53 PM

It's weird to see anyone so invested in him.

by Anonymousreply 74June 12, 2025 10:53 PM

Way too early to be invested in him, but saying he's almost certainly going to run, of course, and to say he has a very good chance, again, of course. And he did a lot of good for himself this week by getting into a very big, very public fight with the cunt in the White House. No question about that.

by Anonymousreply 75June 12, 2025 10:56 PM

Partisan Dems in blue bubbles have the same experience as red R voters.

by Anonymousreply 76June 12, 2025 11:23 PM

Meaning what r76? They're candidate will either win or lose in the next election?

by Anonymousreply 77June 12, 2025 11:29 PM

Gavin's tall, handsome & glib. Major advantages in presidential politics.

by Anonymousreply 78June 12, 2025 11:33 PM

Honestly. He makes everyone outside of CA think he's an American Psycho doppelgänger sociopath. He's going absolutely nowhere. They look at California and think, he did that

by Anonymousreply 79June 12, 2025 11:41 PM

And Americans would never, ever elect a sociopath to the presidency.

by Anonymousreply 80June 12, 2025 11:43 PM

by Anonymousreply 81June 12, 2025 11:47 PM

R77: i've run across some people who are obsessed with the idea that the 2024 election was stolen. It wasn't. These hyper-partisan Dems don't accept that America isn't as far left as they feel is "normal".

by Anonymousreply 82June 13, 2025 12:01 AM

by Anonymousreply 91June 13, 2025 12:36 AM

What a stupid thread. I hope it's 2-3 posters talking to each other.

1. We are in the middle of a national crisis. The President is using force to act in ways that have not been legal in the past. There are American soldiers on the streets to "liberate the city from the socialists" (Sec Noem today). Our nation is in trouble.

2. Newsom spoke clearly, strongly and effectively explaining why this is a crisis. He is the Gov of the state that the Trump administration is attacking.

That's all. 2028? There will be no election the way things are going now.

by Anonymousreply 92June 13, 2025 12:55 AM
Newsom seems to be fighting this alone. Nobody else wants to help for fear of upsetting the rethuglicans.

by Anonymousreply 95June 13, 2025 1:26 AM

R36

Walz was a “weirdo fem governor”? WTF is your problem? You aren’t a democrat and never were, so stop lying.

by Anonymousreply 96June 13, 2025 1:41 AM

Are you watching the press conference! WOW!!!!

by Anonymousreply 97June 13, 2025 1:41 AM

"That's Donald Trump's America."

by Anonymousreply 98June 13, 2025 1:47 AM

I think the Supreme Court will put the judge's order on hold before the weekend is over. 5-4. Barrett will join the liberal women in dissent.

by Anonymousreply 99June 13, 2025 1:55 AM

LOL. Newsom couldn't be a more out of touch candidate. All Republicans have to do is air a 30 second spot of Newsom at a reparation committee meeting, giving the gold swimming medal to a MTF at the Olympics, cutting a ribbon at a school renaming ceremony and backtracking on prop 36. Dems never learn.

by Anonymousreply 100June 13, 2025 4:15 AM

In Newsom, we have what we arguably have not had in the last eight years, a leading voice against Trumpism. An out-of-power party typically does not have such a voice until it coalesces around its next nominee. In the case of Trump 1.0, that was Joe Biden. Who was incapable of being that voice. A failing that continued throughout his presidency, wholly squandering the invaluable bully pulpit. All while Trump remained the uninterrupted colossus within his own party.

by Anonymousreply 101June 13, 2025 4:50 AM

R101 is special needs. Newsom is seen as a joke. He is not electable.

by Anonymousreply 102June 13, 2025 5:21 AM
Walz was a “weirdo fem governor”? WTF is your problem? You aren’t a democrat and never were, so stop lying.

I don't want to fight with you. I am a Democrat. I also said (on DL) the day Kamala picked Walz she lost the election. It wasn't popular but I was right. That's on Kamala. Walz is fem. He is weird. Go ask Kamala why she picked a loser who couldn't carry any swing states. Had she picked Shapiro she would have had a better chance.

In the last 24 hours Newsom held ONE press conference. And he was pretty good.

In 107 days, Presidential Candidate Kamala Harris had ZERO press conferences and she picked Tim Walz as her running mate. She worked so hard to get TRUMP elected I wonder if SHE is a Democrat.

by Anonymousreply 104June 13, 2025 7:05 AM

Rather than outright sexism, Clinton and Harris had lousy political skills, beyond their base voters, who continue to see them as ideal candidates today.

by Anonymousreply 105June 13, 2025 11:07 AM

Worse, she picked Tim Walz then wouldn't even let him go on all the bro podcasts or be useful that way. They were so worried he might say something off message ,I i guess, that they didn't let him appeal to the straight male crowd, which I thought was the whole reason he was selected. But whatever, that's in the past now.. unfortunately...

by Anonymousreply 106June 13, 2025 11:28 AM

California politicians are DOA. No one wants the state that state is in in their back yards: people crapping and shooting up on the street, homeless encampments that go on for miles. Newsom took a surplus and turned it into a deficit. His wife is also a far-Right loser. The guy has no common sense and is everything voters hate.

by Anonymousreply 107June 13, 2025 11:51 AM

It's likely someone not (high up) on the radar now. Obama's 2004 speech was impressive at the time, but he wasn't spoken of as presidential material for '08.

by Anonymousreply 108June 13, 2025 12:11 PM

so you still don't regret your vote for Trump R107?

by Anonymousreply 109June 13, 2025 12:33 PM

NOTE TO TRUMP: Don’t get into a big dick swinging contest with Governor Gavin Newsom.

by Anonymousreply 110June 13, 2025 12:43 PM

Trump is a piece of shit but there’s nothing worse than seeing being a liberal is about burning the American flag and defending illegal immigrants.

And then being called MAGA because you don’t support being anti-American.

:/

by Anonymousreply 111June 13, 2025 12:46 PM

R103, get real. There was a megaton of polling data on what the voters actually thiught.

The # of swing state voters who chose Trump because they thought Harris’s VP pick was a bit weird and not quite “masc” enough was…statistically ZERO.

Especially when the socially maladroit, eyeliner-wearing Vance was Trump’s VP pick.

No. It was mostly economy/inflation, and also some very real issues with the migrant flood of 2021-23 that happened on Biden’s (lack of) watch, plus an anti-“woke” pendulum swing which probably cost another 1-2 pts. Crucial in a tight race.

Also Harris/Walz did relatively better in the swing states than in the non swing states, when you compare how Biden did in 2020 and how much worse Harris did in 2024. Here in NJ it was especially brutal: Harris won by only 5 in 2024 after Biden won by an extremely safe 16 in 2020. That is a disastrous net loss of 11 and if it holds, NJ is almost another battleground state we now have to defend.

by Anonymousreply 112June 13, 2025 1:02 PM

Trump is now underwater on his strongest issue. Newsom's potent attacks are a big part of that.

Newsom, Shapiro, Beshear, Buttigieg and Moore are going to give us an exciting and energetic primary season.

Supporting authoritarianism would seem to me most anti-American.

by Anonymousreply 114June 13, 2025 1:41 PM

R110 You know you are kidding... but this is a critical, ignored if also misunderstood. The old "warrior Alpha" energy communicate by how a candidate looks, acts, sounds. It's not about policy or matching positions to what voters want... it's atavistic, primordial, animal, and subliminal. Yes, Newsom is a douche is so many ways and yes MAGA media has relentlessly tried to present California as a "failed state" (even as its economy grew from 5th largest in the world, to 2nd, the number of homeless drastically reduced, migration out to state reversed back to moderate growth).

Newsom presents strength and boldness. Even in the news conference yesterday listen how he called Trump... "such a SMALL man"... Newsom has huge faults, but he has, metaphorically and politically speaking, the biggest dick around.

by Anonymousreply 115June 13, 2025 2:22 PM

^^ oops, typo, 4th largest economy in the world.

by Anonymousreply 116June 13, 2025 2:23 PM

If you've got 20 mins watch the whole clip. He seems to be one of the only few who are fighting Trump at this moment.
But the idea that he better be some paragon or America (THIS AMERICA? You fucking kidding me?) will reject him is too goddamn stupid to even deal with.

Exactly.

Also agree with r115, to the word.

by Anonymousreply 118June 13, 2025 4:03 PM

I cannot believe Democrats have become so desperate, that when we find one who calls Trump names we find him profound and heroic. This is why we LOSE. Name calling doesn't work on MAGA. Calling Trump small or Hitler does nothing. Just ask Hillary or Kamala. If you didn't learn anything on November 5th, you are in for a tough November 2028.

by Anonymousreply 119June 13, 2025 8:42 PM

R119 "you:" not "we" pretty much tells your story.

It was the "names" he used... it was his energy, persona, etc. Talking back strongly is the ONLY way to "work" on MAGA. And in the last couple days he's been... well, Presidential in his push back. We'll just disagree, ok Bubba?

by Anonymousreply 120June 13, 2025 8:59 PM

I forget how quickly I an aging. A lot can happen in 4 years. Social media changes. For you voters 9/11 was the olden days. George W Bush Who? Obama Who? John McCain? …. At least in the next few years kids who are becoming adults will find Newsom’s speech online. He said specific things. It might energize someone 3 years from now. To vote democrat. Pritzker and Shapiro are next.

by Anonymousreply 121June 13, 2025 9:06 PM

R120 = Calls everyone who disagrees with him MAGA, Republican, Russian, or Bubba. You learned nothing in November 2024. Not a thing.

by Anonymousreply 122June 13, 2025 9:17 PM
If you didn't learn anything on November 5th, you are in for a tough November 2028.

In all likelihood, Donald Trump will not be on the ballot in '28 & even loyal republicans concede that no successor to Trump will be able to mobilize his winning coalition.

by Anonymousreply 123June 13, 2025 9:26 PM

Well I'll again ask the question I never, ever get an answer to from the cult or even from the "moderates": if the Democrats are attacking all wrong, what exactly is the right kind of attack on Trump? Or is the God-King beyond all criticism in your mind? Is the only possible response to Dear Leader absolute and total submission, and does anything less than that upset you in some way?

by Anonymousreply 124June 13, 2025 9:34 PM

I wish all the Democrats serving in the House and Senate would just go to a big, open area in DC tomorrow and hold "Impeach Trump" signs and walk around in a gigantic circle.

That would get noticed.

by Anonymousreply 125June 13, 2025 9:40 PM

We definitely need some big, huge, collective response to the assault on Senator Padilla. I'm honestly not sure what it should be, but I hope wiser, more political, more PR instinctive heads are considering it. And it can't involve some fantasy involving any appeal to the "integrity" of any Republicans. It needs to involve every Democrat in Congress and needs to truly fuck things up in some way.

by Anonymousreply 126June 13, 2025 9:45 PM

R113 see a graph with no source and automatically buys into it.

by Anonymousreply 127June 13, 2025 9:59 PM

R125, they would be a laughing stock. Their previous stunts backfired. People want them to actually do something. No performative bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 128June 13, 2025 10:00 PM

Do what though r128? What can the minority party do, although I have the oddest feeling that Mitch McConnell, well in his younger days, would've come up with something.

by Anonymousreply 129June 13, 2025 10:02 PM

OMG. The next Presidential election isn’t until November 2028. Do you lot ever take a break from all the hand-wringing? Every event that happens has to trigger all the predictions and worry about 2028. Can’t we just get through this summer, ffs?

Also, do you actually believe any MAGA voters are persuadable? Why do you pay attention to MAGA media? What are you doing to yourselves? Any electoral win is going to come from new voters - like some of the 90M eligible voters who sat out the last election - and doing something about voter suppression. The white MAGA/conservative patriarchy is never going to vote for a Democrat so just get over it already.

by Anonymousreply 130June 13, 2025 10:54 PM

So, again, what would be an effective strategy to oppose Trump here and now. Or again, is the one and only acceptable strategy cringeing and crying and submission and hoping the whole thing goes away, cause the God-King must never be opposed or inconvenienced in any way whatsoever. Cause Jesus wouldn't like it, or some shit.

by Anonymousreply 131June 14, 2025 12:40 AM

His big, beautuful budget will be nothing like the draconian cuts he imagined. That House vote was so they could go home, punting it to the Senate. They have only a couple of votes to spare, with some R demands mutually exclusive, can't satisfy both sides. The 'reconciliation' will be a mess.

If you want me to be blunt, I'll go there: Congressional Rs are waiting for him to be gone, as in a funeral, or declared no longer capable: enter Vance. That's why they won't confront.

by Anonymousreply 132June 14, 2025 12:50 AM
What can the minority party do?

For starters, admit when we have shitty policies like immigration and crime. We spend too much time saying "hey, at least we don't support Trump" and make fun of Trump supporters. Focus is lost.

by Anonymousreply 133June 14, 2025 4:33 AM

R133, with all due respect, you don’t understand what’s going on. Turn off the tv, stay off the internet and do some gardening for a few months. Enjoy your life.

Trump is polling below water on his immigration policies. For the first time, Americans are seeing MAGA conservative immigration policies at work and even MAGA voters are saying this isn’t what we voted for (even though it is). Consensus is starting to take shape about what immigration legislation should look like, in reality and in action. Even Newsome did not shy away from saying “there should be a path to citizenship.” And you think Congressional Democrats should step all over this so MAGA politicians can attack them? You think the Dems should put themselves out there to protect their MAGA colleagues? Learn the difference between action and PROGRESS. Trump is doing a great job of demonstrating the need for an immigration bill every day. No need for the Dems to crash in over that right now just to say, “AND WE NEED A COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION BILL!” We already get it.

Stop paying attention to MAGA media and pay attention to the majority of Americans. MAGA media is a shameless, immoral universe. We see it as Trump tries to will it into existence. There’s no need to mainline it or try to reason with it or promote it further. It will meet its own end. Pay attention to reality. Engage with that.

by Anonymousreply 134June 14, 2025 10:09 AM

I don’t think the BBB is going to make it out of the Senate.

And if it does, it passed with 1 vote in the House, where there is so much immovable opposition from both ends of the MAGA “save my seat” spectrum, it’s hard to believe they have the votes for it. Plus, it’s already received such a public airing - far more than it was ever intended to (thanks, Elon!) - there’s no way it’s going to pass quietly. It’s got a long way to go.

I predict it dies in the Senate because ultimately no one will want to own its contents and sign a death sentence for their own political future. I predict they save face by saying, “Oh, we’ve decided these issues need to be dealt with individually so we’re going to work on passing a number of smaller, clean bills.” And then nothing will happen.

by Anonymousreply 135June 14, 2025 10:14 AM
Stop paying attention to MAGA media and pay attention to the majority of the American people.

Unfortunately, the reality is that the MAGA media was more in tune with the American people in last year’s election.

by Anonymousreply 136June 14, 2025 10:47 AM

No, it wasn’t, R136. Not with more eligible voters sitting out the election than those that voted for either candidate.

The channel representative of the majority of the American people would be colour bars or static.

Don’t confuse the electorate for the actual majority. That’s as much of a misrepresentation as when people colour in every red state on the map to make it seem like the entire country is bleeding red. It isn’t.

by Anonymousreply 137June 14, 2025 11:00 AM
Don’t confuse the electorate for the actual majority.

The majority of eligible adults - as distinguished from registered voters - never vote in elections, even presidential elections. But it is only the voting electorate that really matters, not some amorphous “majority.”

by Anonymousreply 138June 14, 2025 11:13 AM

How hilarious that you think only the electorate that matters.

You know what turns an eligible voter into a member of the electorate? One vote.

And imagine how many MAGA voters will be joining the majority of eligible, non-voting adults once Trump is off the ballot. Do you think MAGA would’ve turned out in 2016 for Ted Cruz and Carly Fiorina? And Trump still lost the popular vote by 3.5M. Trump is laying the groundwork for their disillusionment now which will be full-fledged disenfranchisement when 2028 rolls around. You think what’s left of MAGA is going to support some tech bro? Of course you do. Of course.

by Anonymousreply 139June 14, 2025 1:45 PM
You think what’s left of MAGA is going to support some tech bro? Of course you do. Of course.

But of course I don't. Please note my post @ R123:
In all likelihood, Donald Trump will not be on the ballot in '28 & even loyal republicans concede that no successor to Trump will be able to mobilize his winning coalition.

by Anonymousreply 140June 14, 2025 1:56 PM

Yes it was r137.

by Anonymousreply 141June 14, 2025 2:25 PM

Democrats lost the election, including the popular vote, against a convicted felon who attacked the government. If you don’t think there’s an issue with Democrats, you’re beyond help. Keep pushing the tranny shit, the Orwellian word play, looting, tearing down statues, calling the country evil, and stumping for prison inmates. Surely that will win over voters.
