Trans racial actors

Back in the social reckoning in the summer of 2020 I remember a discussion about actors and someone commented it was disgraceful that a Jew was allowed to play Ghandi. That Jew being Sir Ben Kingsley, born Krishna Pandit Bhanji to an English mother and Indian father. But because he has played a lot of Jews over they years and was a bit swarthy looking he was perceived as Jewish. He's also played Iranian (House of Sand And Fog) and Nazi (Adolf Eichmann).

When fellow British Indian Sarita Choudhury started her career she played a lot of latino and South American characters.

Who are other actors who play across the racial divide?

by Anonymousreply 52June 9, 2025 4:22 AM

Al Pacino has played more Puerto Rican characters than John Leguizamo. Let that sink in.

If you support transgenderism then you support trans racialism. Plain and simple. I’m not trolling but it’s true. Accept all kinds. Let love ring true.

by Anonymousreply 4June 8, 2025 12:41 PM

Kingsley never played Ghandi. He did play Gandhi, however

by Anonymousreply 5June 8, 2025 12:43 PM

John Leguizamo isn't Puerto Rican and most of his ancestry is probably European.

by Anonymousreply 6June 8, 2025 12:46 PM

Carol Channing

by Anonymousreply 7June 8, 2025 12:55 PM

He was really good in SISTERS with Tina Fey and Amy P.

by Anonymousreply 8June 8, 2025 12:55 PM

The lovely white Welsh lady Catherine Zeta Jones has played Latino several times.

by Anonymousreply 9June 8, 2025 12:56 PM

R6 Stfu you stupid ass bitch. He thought he was Puerto Rican and grew up immersed in Puerto Rican culture. That’s like saying Jazz is less than a woman because she wasn’t born with a pussy.

by Anonymousreply 10June 8, 2025 12:57 PM

I just assume all "Latino" people with Spanish surnames are European. They all look like someone you'd see in Rome, Athens or Barcelona.

Like lovely little Asunción Hostin who did that heritage show to find out her ancestors were Spanish slave owners.

by Anonymousreply 11June 8, 2025 1:02 PM

OP - Ben Kingsley is about 1/8 Jewish. That does not qualify as Jewish.

by Anonymousreply 12June 8, 2025 1:04 PM

Self-described “Euro mutt” Christopher Abbott played Afghan in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot as recently as 2016.

by Anonymousreply 13June 8, 2025 1:07 PM

Mickey Rooney, of course

Yes R12, which is why I wrote "he is perceived as being Jewish" instead of "he is a Jew".

There's an Irish actor called Christopher Simpson who largely played Asian characters - he is White/African.

In the Classic Hollywood years, Irish-American actor J. Carrol Naish played virtually every race and ethnicity, except African/African-American.

He racked up 224 credits according to the Internet Movie Database.

by Anonymousreply 19June 8, 2025 2:04 PM

R10 - No - John Leguizamo did NOT think he was Puerto Rican. He flat out lied.

He was born in Colombia - both of his parents were born and from Colombia. His great-grandfather was mayor of Bogota and his grandfather was a wealthy landowner. John went to Colombia to live with his relatives for a year when he was young - there's no way he didn't know both of his parents were Colombian and that his family there was Puerto Rican.

His parents were middle-class immigrants and settled into an area of Queens with a lot of other middle-class immigrants from Colombia in an area called Little Colombia. His father was an aspiring film director and studied in Italy for it and taught him about film, directing and film classics.

This whole "I'm from the Latino ghetto and we were so poor" is relative bullshit. He leaned into the PR angle to sell tickets to his one-man shows in NYC and to have some street cred. His own father was quoted as saying he had no idea why his son claims he's Puerto Rican when he knows he's Colombian.

I like John - but he has curated a story about his life that isn't true so he can seem like some Latino street kid that came from nothing and had no theatrical background, etc. That's just not the case.

He also lies about his age. Sure, he IS Latino - but to say he was mistaken about being Puerto-Rican is just false.

Jennifer Lopes IS Benazir Bhutto in Queen of Karachi.

by Anonymousreply 21June 8, 2025 2:36 PM

John Leguizamo is such a phony baloney.

He's gotten really annoying in the last few years as he's become somewhat irrelevant.

by Anonymousreply 22June 8, 2025 3:40 PM

Yul Brynner, of course

by Anonymousreply 23June 8, 2025 3:42 PM

I don't like them.

Ben Kingsley is of Indian descent, OP--your information is as fucked up as your spelling of "Gandhi":
[bold]Kingsley was born Krishna Pandit Bhanji[/bold] on 31 December 1943, in Snainton, North Riding of Yorkshire. His mother, Anna Lyna Mary (née Goodman) (1914–2010), was an English actress and model, and she later gave birth to a second son called Sadru Bhanji, who later worked as a psychiatrist in Devon. She was born out of wedlock and "was loath to speak of her background". [bold]His father, Rahimtulla Harji Bhanji (1914–1968), was born in Zanzibar (now part of Tanzania) to a family originating from the Indian city of Jamnagar, of Khoja Gujarati descent.[/bold]
Cliff Curtis- New Zealand actor of Maori descent has played characters of different races/ethnicities for many years.

Curtis is who I immediately thought of. The showrunners of "Fear of the Walking Dead" envisioned his character as Latino, but Curtis talked them into letting him play as his own ethnicity.

by Anonymousreply 26June 8, 2025 4:51 PM

John Leguizamo lied about his ethnicity for decades until his father outed him. He’s columbian. He says Latinx now and cries that he doesn’t get parts because racism. He forgot that he did yellowface and played an Italian plumber.

by Anonymousreply 27June 8, 2025 4:52 PM

R25, the OP states clearly that Kingsley was *PERCEIVED* to be Jewish and is in fact British/Indian, sharing his birth name

by Anonymousreply 28June 8, 2025 4:53 PM

Sarah Silverman is another woke nightmare now crying about non-Jews playing Jews. This is coming from a woman who did blackface. We all know how hard it is for Jews to make it in Hollywood. lol

by Anonymousreply 29June 8, 2025 4:53 PM

Italians were always cast as Native Americans.

I didn't blame him for not realizing he was collumbian.
Sarah Silverman is another woke nightmare now crying about non-Jews playing Jews. This is coming from a woman who did blackface. We all know how hard it is for Jews to make it in Hollywood. lol

One of the things that Silverman observed is that when the character was a heroic Jew or a romantic love interest, then it would often be a non Jewish actor. But when the character was an annoying person the actor would always be visibly Jewish.

An example of this would be non Jews and generally attractive women Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston playing Jews and Jewish actress the Jewish looking Maggie Wheeler playing shrill annoying Janice Hosenstein.

The two leads in Operational Finale were Oscar Isaac and Melanie Laurent, two non Jewish looking non Jews. In Defiance, the 4 Jewish brothers were played by 3 English actors and Ukrainian Jew Liev Schreiber.

And of course when it comes to Jews in Hollywood, it's such an accepting place that there is no history of Jews changing their names to "pass" as white is there?

Silverman bitched up a storm when Kathryn Hahn was cast to play Joan Rivers in a miniseries and she called the casting "Jewface". Yet, somehow Silverman had no problem being in Maestro which starred non-Jewish Bradley Cooper as Leonard Bernstein.
Latina Cameron Diaz never plays Latinas.

C list actresses Joanna Garcia and Julie Gonzalo never play Latinas either. Gonzalo is an Argentine immigrant who came to the US as a child. English was her second language. Gonzalo does a bunch of Hallmark movies, but will likely never play a Latina in any of them. Joanna Garcia's father was a Cuban immigrant and IIRC, she learned Spanish as a child.

Julie Gonzalo probably speaks better Spanish than Eva "LOOK AT ME I'M SO LATINA" Longoria.

1940s starlet Dona Drake (born Eunice Westmoreland in Florida) was light-skinned African-American who became Latina "Rita Rio" when she fronted an-all girl Orchestra and was restyled as being Mexican-Irish when signed by Paramount. After a few roles as soubrettes she played Latin spitfires, then Bette Davis' Native-American slatternly maid in BEYOND THE FOREST. She was married to the great costume designer William Travilla and had one daughter.

Helen Lawson. Playing Suzie Wong in the remake, with French’s mustard slathered on her face, was the last straw for moviegoers. Funny that she got away with playing Rosa Parks in the well-received motion picture “ I Want To Live Sitting Down!”

by Anonymousreply 51June 9, 2025 3:59 AM

"The two leads in Operational Finale were Oscar Isaac and Melanie Laurent, two non Jewish looking non Jews"

Melanie Laurent is Jewish. Sarah Silverman is just pissed because Laurent is a beautiful woman. The turn to bitterness seems to happen around 45-50 with actresses who feel they deserved more.
