I'm descended from illegal immigrants. My first "American" ancestors were colonists, arriving to north-eastern shores in 1660. Driving natives from their lands, mowing down forests, slaughtering the abundance of wildlife, plundering furs, and fighting in every war fought to build and support this nation. Four of my ancestors fought in the American Revolution, one died on a British prison ship. One branch moved south and were slave-owners.
The family continually moved westward, my branch eventually settling in San Francisco circa 1900. My Bay Area family, originally Northern European Christians, grew to include other immigrants, Jews, Asians, Hispanics, and Blacks. We're now pretty blended genetically, when the family gets together it's basically a group of loud, educated, happy, opinionated people where ethnicity isn't readily apparent and the skins glow in lovely shades from white to brown. My trans nibling is warmly supported.
I grew up with immigrants. My best friend's mom was a refugee from Franco's Spain, other friends were a variety of ethnicities. One Chinese friend, who always said "American" when asked what he was, descended from Gold Rush pioneers. He was very proud of his heritage and his mom was a great cook, blending Chinese flavors with American.
Fuck off to all racists. They do not know what they are missing when they close their hearts to diversity. Diversity is a beautiful thing. So many immigrants I know are strivers, innovators, and very ambitious. They get educations and live lives far more enriched than your average MAGA, whose ignorance and hate are ruining this country. Even the wealthiest, like rump and smuk, are devastatingly poor in mind and spirit.
At least our current immigrants, legal or not, are here to work and succeed, not kill off us "natives." Some may struggle as they adapt, but most just want security and a means to support their families. People always have moved about to improve their lot. My ancestors did and so do refugees and immigrants.
I understand the fear of replacement people have. I felt resentment when certain wealthy legal immigrants came to CA and started buying up houses and land, raising prices and making housing difficult to get. But many Americans have come to CA from all over the country, and continue to do so, for the opportunity and adventure of the state with a world renowned economy. I resented them, too, when I first joined the job force and noticed how many there were, Americans and foreigners alike, invading my state. I got over it and count among my friends a wonderful variety of interesting people from around the country and the world.
I also wish people would stop saying "we're the greatest country on earth." No, we are not, not with scum trump as president. Anyway, if you don't want people to come here for opportunity, stop sayin that already.
